I simply LOVE Dawnwood. I'm in 7th grade and on team 7-2. I have the best teachers in the school, and I love all of them. Mr Hill is so funny and encouraging. He trys alot to help out and cares alot about your grade. Mrs. Gray is very easy going and has such an intresting/ creative way of learning. She is very easy to follow/ Learn from. Mrs. Thrasher is very involved and understanding. She has such interesting conversations with the class and always has a point to what she says. And Mrs. Newport. She is INCREDIBLY nice. She's very sweet and being in her classroom always puts me in a good mood. I have have a great team, and having them as teachers is one of the many reasons I love coming to school. Sports is another thing. I do as many as I can and they keep me occupied, active and I love doing them. If your not a sports person they're are also many clubs to participate in. The art music and sports programs are great, and Dawnwood is the best school you could possibly go to
I love this school so much. All the teachers ,guidence counslers, office workers ect. ect. are so welcoming. The bullying in this school does not really occur and when it does the princible take immidiate action. This is an excellent school to go to!
The Principal/Assistant Principal team is a wonderful model. The staff and teachers are very professional and the students seem genuinely happy to be in this building. The diverse elements that are offered are refreshing. Although protected, the students are not babied, and are responsible. I wish every middle school in America could be run in this manner.
I love this school! It has a lot of clubs to join, and the teachers and couslers are very caring. Contact with my parents are pretty good; they have contact cards in the nurses' office, and plenty of other ways. Band taught me a lot more than I knew coming here. The teachers are caring, fun, and try everything to teach you what you need to be taught!
My son went to Dawnwood when we moved to the district two years ago. We came from a great district and this school stood up to the potential. We loved it! Overall a great music program, sports are good and the teachers are helpful. My son did not want to leave. It's one of the better Jr. High schools that I've seen.
The teacher also have no interest in the students education except for one teacher , and shes probaly the only teahcer in dawnwood middle school that actually cares and her name is Mrs. Gray.
I moved here lasted year, welcoming Dawnwood with a new 7th grader. From coming from Pat-med School District, to Dawnwood, there was a huge difference. As a former student Of South Ocean Middle school, Dawnwood has them beat by all the activites and such. Although the bullying is about the same. The teachers here are very nice, excluding a few, but the extra carricular activitys aren't by far the greatest. I'll be going into 8th grade, being a bit happy leaving in a year. Honestly the only reason I'd say it was a good school would be b/c of the former school I went to in Pat-med, but other then that, it isn't the greatest school in LI.
This school is one of the best, Nice teachers and a respected athletic program, I went here for seventh grade and the school is phenomenal over all.
My son is a 6th grader. He's on a tough team, but it's working out well for him academically. The music program is great! Art is pretty good, too. My son won't join the intramural sports because there is no set schedule of events. My major complaint is lack of information and parental involvement. No notices are sent home about anything, we must rely on the students themselves to find out anything. My son says the announcements are sometimes lacking and difficult to hear. I would like more information about clubs, sports, etc. It is very difficult for us parents to transition from being very involved in elementary school to basically nothing in middle school. The kids are expected to instantly grow up when they are still really young at only 11. We don't even get their schedule until the first day of school! That makes things very difficult.
I guess you are stuck sending your children here! This school is not very inviting. The school follows a curriculum that is not helpful to struggling students. The teachers are hard on some students and make it difficult to do well!
My daughter started middle school this year. It was a tough adjustment for her but not because of the attributes of the school. The guidance counsellors and teachers were wonderful in helping her adjust and she did so very quickly. I love the teachers on her team and she does too. They are good teachers and they coordinate well. The involved the parents more than other team leaders - which is very much appreciated. Math moves very quickly but there is lots of extra help offered and the notes look good. THe other subjects seem appropriate - not all that challenging so far. Music and art are superb at Dawnwood. I don't know much about the sports.
Academic programs are excellent. Although there are a few teachers that should retire, most reach the children on their level. The art program throughout the district is incredible. Music is also a good program. Sports and many othe extracurricular activities are offered. Parental involvement could be better. The building itself is getting tired and could use a facelift.
