my children have all attended Highland and are attending Highland. We have been at Highland for 12 years now and I love the school. the teachers are wonderful and truly care about the kids. I attended Highland when I was younger and it is the main reason I moved back here when I had kids.

I loved Higland when I attended there for K-4 and I couldnt be more proud that my children attend Highland. I am dedicated to making Highland the 'Grand Old School' it can be. Please help in making Highland Elementary a GREAT school for our children!!

It's been years, but I attended Highland from grades one through six. Not only did they educate, they allowed me to make wonderful friends, most of whom I'm still in contact with today. If this school is anything like it was when I was there, it should have all five stars. Kudos to my teachers, principal, and friends.

This is a wonderful school. My son attended Highland for grades 4 and 5. His teachers were excellent (including his 4th and 5th grade teachers, reading specialist, gym teacher, music teacher). Any time we had a concern, which was rare, they were quick to get back to us and open to our concerns. It may be true that a lot of parents don t attend the PTG meetings, but I know for a fact that many parents attend field trips because I went to every one I was able to attend and there were a lot of other parents attending as well. My husband chaperoned the 5th grade camping trip along with a slew of other parents. Speaking of the camping trip, my son had a blast. A

The complaints that PTG meeting are poorly attended is due to the fact that the parents input is not considered. My second child is now attending Highland. The teachers my children have had, are dedicated and listen to the child as well as the parent. The academics scores are well above average. Overall this is an excellent school. My only complaint is the PTG. They have taken away programs that the children love such as secret Santa. I personally have volunteered on several occasions and was told I was not needed.

The staff at Highland has always aimed higher to make sure our children get the best education. It is unfortunate Music, Art and Physica Education have been cut back over the years. We almost lost Art totally but got a reprive from the state. The acedemic programs are first rate, as is the teacher commitment. Parent involvement is low, considering the size of the school. PTG meetings are poorly attended. Functions, hosted by the PTG, for the benefit of the student body, are not well received by most parents, not all. Overall, Highland is still a great school!

About the tests

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, the New York State Department of Instruction implemented new assessments designed to be aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The new standards for proficiency in these subjects are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change. See this letter from New York's Commissioner of Education for more information on these changes.

In 2013-2014 New York used the New York State Assessments to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English language arts and math, and in grades 4 and 8 in Science. At present 2013-14 results are available only for English language arts and math. The tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of New York. The goal is for 90% of students to meet or exceed grade-level standards on the tests.
