I have had my children in this school, and I know for a fact that they have had to reduce the workload/expectancy in order for the school to show better grades. The curriculum was SO poor that I opted to take them out. Imagine just beginning to learn the CONCEPT of multiplication in 4th grade! How about drawing pictures w/1 sentence as a BOOK REPORT?! Spelling for 4th grade were the usual K or 1st grade words: off, two, about. It was ridiculous and so sad, too. I must say the teachers were very good and enthusiastic.

My daughter just graduated from 5TH grade here - the district restructured in June '05 and took 5th out of Finley Middle, yay! Her teachers were very supportive of everything she did and gave creative assignments that kept her interest. They also took the time to get to know her as an individual and noticed when she was having an off day. Chorus and band both had multiple students perform at the NYSSMA Festival this year, with many getting 27 or 28 out of 28 and acceptance to NMEA All-County Chorus or Band. Also there's a new program for violin which begins in 3rd grade. Community service is encouraged through programs like Pennies for Patients (aka Nickels for Noah in our school), Kiwanis Kids and Girl Scouts. Many graduates received Presidential Awards for Educational Excellence.

Having been both a student and, later, parent in the Glen Cove community, I have had a great deal of experience with the Glen Cove City School District, and specifically, with the Landing Elementary School. In every way, Landing stands out as the model by which all elementary schools should emulate. The principal is open minded, hands-on in his philosophy, and, most importantly, child-centered. Simply stated, he will stop at nothing to do what is best for a child's education and self-esteem. These fine qualities are reflected also in his teaching staff, and all others employed within the building. Parents are actively involved in all aspects of their child's education, and are welcomed to do so! Landing School is a place where children feel safe, important, and loved.
