An barely OK school - it appears that they they strive for students to achieve mediocrity. They offer little if anything for advanced students to excel. Most teachers don't teach anything for the last few weeks of the school year - it turns more into a party atmosphere. In addition most teachers don't dress like the professional role models that they should be. They have useless field trips which further detract from productive class time. In addition class size (student/teacher ratio) has gone up and everything is budget drivien which in turn is dominated by teachers pensions/benefits (ie unions). All of this is at the exppense of the children. If they feel confident in their ability to provide a good education then they should have no objection to a Voucher System for education.

there is nothing special about this school. I don't think my sons teacher is anything great...she is average, she teaches the curriculum and nothing else. This district is not as good as the HHH district next door where there is creative learning going on....Oh, and the parents don't seem friendly and there are not many playdates....

I personally had the opportunity to experience maplwood first hand and would like parents to know that this is an excellent school that holds the support of the community. They are very intune with your children and work very hard to get them the services that they need in order to encourage their success. The music program is wonderful. i would recommend this school to anyone.

About the tests

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, the New York State Department of Instruction implemented new assessments designed to be aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The new standards for proficiency in these subjects are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change. See this letter from New York's Commissioner of Education for more information on these changes.

In 2012-2013 New York used the New York State Assessments to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English language arts and math. The tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of New York. The goal is for 90% of students to meet or exceed grade-level standards on the tests.
