This school was not the right choice for my gifted daughter. She learned differently from the way that LISG teaches. This gave way to many obstacles. The principal refuses to compromise. There are few extra cirriculars, math and science are the only subject accented, and the school is very rigid. The school does not allocate any special needs what so ever.
A one of a kind school in the New York Metropolitan area! We moved to Long Island for this school. We commuted from the North Bronx for six months before moving our family to Huntington for this school. Prior to that we searched and visited schools in Connecticut, Westchester, Jersey and NYC. My 2 children have attended LISG for 4 years now and love it!! Classes are capped at 16. The teachers are fabulous. Families are very involved. Though the school cannot offer all of the amenities that the public schools do (it is comparitively very inexpensive for private education), they do a remarkable job with the resources they have in music, art, gym, computers and technology, foreign language, etc and is not lackning in any way. Gifted children are appropriately challenged in a way not offered ANYWHERE else. They are all working above grade level and are even more specifically re-grouped in reading and math to best suit their needs and ability. And though parent access to the building is limited, (contrary to negative reviews below) many parents who volunteer or are involved in any activity during school hours have the pleasure of observing children during their school day.
If your gifted child has ANY other special needs--whether it be ADHD, social/emotional issues, or a simple motor skill delay--do NOT send them here. My son attended here for 3 years and though he got straight A's the school did nothing to address his other needs, & don't want to let OT's, para's, etc in their school. Some of the teachers there are top-notch, caring, dedicated professionals. Unfortunately, some are quite the opposite. one teacher mocked, bullied, embarrassed and belittled my son for 3 years straight. Though he had a doctors note from a neurologist explaining his vocal tics, she told me to my face, and to his, that she "believed he could control them". She made him sit in the hallway to do his work so he didn't disrupt the class--despite being told numerous times that this was not acceptable. Administration is secretive and deceptive. Switching my son to public school was like going from hell to heaven. Unfortunately, he's not as academically challenged in public school, but it is better in every other way. Enter at your own risk, and be VERY careful if your child has special needs.
I cannot say enough positive things about LISG. My son attended from kindergarten-8th grade, and will be attending an Ivy unverversity in the fall. What makes LISG special, is that is actually encourages students to learn at a much faster academic pace, and usually, and by high school, students are at least one to two grade years advanced in math and science. The school is a "fortress" in that parents can't go and brown nose administration and teachers as I've seen happen in public and other private schools. I think this is a positive. There are downsides -- sports is lacking, but my son was able to make up for this at his high school, and most kids do sports on the side in their communities. LISG gave my child the best foundation possible to excel in high school and beyond. Now, many of this classmates are Valedictorians of their local high schools and winning national science competitions. Granted, LISG is not for everyone, but for the lucky few who are gifted and need a challenge, I can think of no better place. Some people commuted from New Jersey just to attend. Best thing that ever happened for my child.
The school has an unhealthy culture of paranoia and secrecy - parents are never allowed in building, decisions by teachers and administrators are never explained (very "white tower"), administration feels that they know your child better than you do (and will actually say that) and will often make decisions for your child behind your back, and justify them. The attitude is very "you give us your money, now shut up and go away." It was our feeling that the school lets itself get away with this, because they feel parents of gifted kids are desperate for differentiated education...save your money...unless you want to have yourself and your kids mistreated.
Steep price tag for a school that is basically tutoring your kids in basic subjects ONLY ( and even the lower school science is literally retaught from Pre-K -3rd, same exact curriculum)..No arts, no sports, no real music program = $16K to accelerate your already brainy kid as far as possible so they can never fit into any other school until high school, which they do not accommodate. Material is skimmed over - kids learn nothing in depth - all acceleration and zero enrichment. They are not in business of educating great thinkers, but rather create rule followers and test takers. Academics are taught in a very 1950's rote way - our child (who attended for several years and was a straight A student), actually had a comment on a paper once that said it was "too creative." A few years ago we were invited to a "science presentation" which had a teacher at the front of the room literally dictate to the kids every step of how to present their project (that each child had exactly the same).Children who did not open their kids in perfect time with others were corrected - was so strange. Smart/gifted kids deserve a challenging curriculum, but not at this price (and I don't mean financial).
This school is K through 9. To be considered the student will have an IQ of 130 or above. Both my children went to this school. One through 9th, one left after 8th to start H.S. sports in 9th. If your child can get in to this school, they will get a superior education and their future will change drastically. My son just started law school at a top tier NYC school on FULL scholarship. My daughter will graduate H.S. this coming year at the top of her class and is eligible for any college of her choosing. The difference is the students don't have to wait for others to learn what they have mastered. Every student moves at their own pace and all of them are accelerated. This means that in H.S. they are able to take at least 10 AP classes. (Make sure your H.S. offers many). Their college app is exceptional because this is rare. My son and his former classmates (one just graduated from MIT and is going to Brown for a pHD program. The other just graduated from Lafayette on scholarship and is already employed as an engineer), were reminiscing about all the wonderful times they had together. The teachers are awesome. I am thankful every day for LISG and what it did for us.
LISG saved my children. We took both of our children out of our local middle school (rating: 8) because it was failing them in every way. We have found the teachers at LISG to be dedicated and the curriculum appropriately challenging. Our children were caught up quickly and are now working at their true academic level. Have seen bullying issues dealt with quickly and never seen any racial issues at all. We've never had an issue with the administration and have always been kept apprised of our children's situations. Both children made more friends than they ever had in their previous schools. I am giving LISG 5 stars because it's the only school of its kind in this area. Sure, the facilities are a bit dated, the textbooks are older, and the extra curricular activities are limited. Big deal. Let's look at the flip-side: For a private school, the tuition is modest. Textbooks are revised to make money for publishers, not because there are stunning advancements in every field every 2 years. Extra curricular experiences are built into the school day to compensate for the difficulty of transporting students from all over LI home every day. BTW, the new music teacher is a dynamo.
As a former student with actual experience to rate this review, I willingly and enthusiastically give the school 5 stars. I grew up at LISG. The staff is absolutely wonderful and really makes an effort to make each student feel like family. The school promotes an atmosphere of culture and learning. Students are encouraged to ask questions and are very much allowed to be themselves. I visit whenever I can because the teachers and the halls are home to me. Currently, I am dating a former student who was a year below me (we were friends in 8th and 9th grade respectively)! I am sorry to hear in other reviews that parents feel their children are being bullied. In my entire experience (K-9th) at LISG I never saw such a thing and can't fathom that is the reality. With regards to lacking in music and sports education, I am a singer and guitarist and highly adept with sports. The lack of programs for these extracurriculars within the LISG program is no hinderance to the acute development in the future.
It is one of the best schools on Long Island. Excellent education, friendly and knowledgeable staff and extremely well behaved students. If you believe school is for learning then this is the right school for you. It does lacks in music and sports education.
My son completed his first year here and its been great for him. The teachers have worked hard bringing him up to speed, and he has received so much help with getting him into learning again. He had been wrecked by public school, and shoved to the side like many other different or talented kids do. I can not say anything bad about any of the staff. Yes the work is advanced but thats what these kids need, when he can't keep up is when we have a problem. My only complaint is communication is weak, and interaction of parents is discouraged. I will agree I do see a very competitve nature in the children, but that is how life is.
A great concept very poorly executed. Substandard facilities, virtually no extra-curricular activities, terrible administrative support, teachers with severe attitudes, inability and/or unwillingness to deal with anything outside the norm, a culture that suspiciously and blatantly favors female students, failure to live up to promised levels of student advancement, failure to facilitate AP/SAT Subject testing for 9th grade students, fosters a terribly competitive atmosphere, and focuses attention on the 2 or 3 genius level kids to the exclusion of everyone else.
This school is doing a bad job for my child. He is harassed in school by teachers, administrators, and other children because of his different race. He is often blamed for doing bad things without any proof. He is miserable there and plans to leave. He has been here for 8 years now. During his first few years it was great. But now the trouble begins. This school also is completely way under budget. Every 8 out of 10 teachers are excellent teachers so I give the school credit for some teachers. Also their curriculum is very advanced. If your child is not a stereotypical white, expect your child to be picked on by many people.
My daughter just started this school 2 months ago. I have to say, I am very happy with the program. The teachers are very nice and they do a lot of work with the kids. My daughter was so bored in her other school. She missed the cut- of by a little bit over a month. We tried to get the principle of advance her a grade and she wouldn;t do it, giving up no other option by to get her IQ tested. In a way, it turned out to be a good thing, because she then qualified to go to this school. The drive is far for us, and tution is a bit high, but at the end, we know she is getting a much better education.
As a parent of two other adult children that graduated from a catholic school and public high school there are reference points for me. I can say that the LISG is the school to send your child . The school gives you child the opportunity to get a curriculum that is tested over and over again. My daughter was in two other schools before LISG. However, the school is weak on extra-curriculum
I have been attending this school for several years. This school is wonderful in many ways, but is also lacking in many areas. For one thing, there are no extracurricular activities, except for a few such as mathletes and drama; both of which the parents must pick the students up from school. There is no late bus provided. The school also has a very lacking music program. All that is taught is the recorder. In the math curriculum, the students are not taught everything in one course, however, they are taught concepts that they don't need until future years. The science program is also very over-simplified, causing the students to misunderstand what is written in their textbooks. However, the staff is very nice and supportive of every child's needs. But overall, I find this school to be lacking in many critical areas.
It's theoretically a wonderful idea for an extremely under served group of children in todays school system. Unfortunately, they miss the mark in many areas. The reading and writing program is so weak and outdated. The overall program is way too 'rote' in it's methodology. It lacks severely in creativity and enrichment. The constant skipping leaves holes in basic foundations necessary. Many parents have their children tutored to fill in the lacking areas. Overall, I found this school to be disappointing. The administration is often mean and condescending to the parents, sometimes even to the students.
My daughter has been in the school for several years. She has loved every single minute of it. She has close friends, loves her teachers and comes home with a smile on her face. I think the school does a good job of challenging kids that otherwise would be painfully bored in a traditional setting. The best part of the school is how normal the kids feel, by simply being around other kids just like them. Strong academics, kind teachers, an administration that is trying hard to become more 'gentle' and approachable = a great school for the under served gifted child.
The school is like by my child who has attended this school for many years. Overall the school is doing a good not great job. Courses are at best partly challenging but really not that difficult since my child is a A student. I do however feel that my child has developed a good friends and has grow perhaps into a great test taker. I would welcome more courses and extra activities other than academics for its students. Also a less hostile environment for its parents who disagree with Administration who don't not take criticizing anything about its school well.
Students are placed in classes based on ability. The Curriculum is challenging, but needs to be up-dated. Severely lacking is outdoor play, a decent music program, the recorder is it. Reading music is out. A free thinking art program would be liberating as well. There are no clubs, or extracurricular activities of any kind. Parent participation is neither encouraged nor welcomed.
