Kids (K-12) are outgoing and friendly--they look you in the eye and are comfortable with themselves and their community. Also great teachers and admin. focused on a winning curriculum.
The class sizes are small and the teaching is personal. They know are kids and it is asafe and healthy environment with a solid education as the outcome.
The school is extraordinary and the person running it (Cynthia Johnston) is a wonderful leader of the day-to-day school as well as working toward it's long term future. The community is very supportive of the school. It rates an 8 of 10 on this site. It may not be perfect for everyone but no school is. We are very lucky to have such a school here.
Principal Leadership severely lacking - no one really running the school
I've got two kids in this school, one who started in Kindergarten and is now in the Middle School, and the other who has attended for 10 years and will soon graduate. Keene is a very caring and talented community and this shows in our kids. The school is very strong academically and has an efficient yet very personal administrative staff, dedicated and well-trained teachers, and the nicest kids I have ever worked with. The school is known for its good sportsmanship, its outgoing and friendly students and the strong sense of community and responsibility the kids feel.
I am a graduate of Keene Central School. After 13 years at this school I can honestly say that it was a pleasant experience. Class sizes are tiny, typically under 20 students, sometime as few a 5 in some high school courses. Teachers at this school are generally exceptional; however, the music department was never very good in my high school years. If you are looking for a place for a student to well academically this school is the choice. There are many academic support systems (on top of the fact that most teachers will go out of their way to help you).
This school is very small (approx 200 K-12)and is not able to offer as many programs as bigger schools, however, they do an excellent job at offering as much as they can through distance learning, etc. This school community is very supportive of the arts! Teachers, administrator and parents value and want art, sport, etc for the children. Very refreshing compared to other schools in the area. I was blown away by the amount of not just parent, but community involvement in this school. The community really holds this little school in the palm of it's hand. I am also impressed by the sincere caring that the teachers have for the students. There are of course a few slacker teachers (which you will find in every school), but the majority work well together and really love the kids!
