My children have flourished in this warm academic environment. With small class sizes and relatively few students, this idyllic campus engenders a space where most everyone knows one another. Teachers share information with each other about my children on a regular basis. I'm always impressed that a math teacher knows how my son did in a game, and how the English teacher knows how my daughter did in math. It's hard to fail with this type of support system and encouragement. I'm also delighted at the diversity. Portledge is far from a stereotypical prep school. You'll find no crested tweed jackets and spectacles here. Behind the ivy covered facade, this school is dynamic and alive. With a foot in the educations basics and another in technology, it is at once traditional, while cutting edge. I'm always grateful I made this choice for my two children.

Beautiful campus hides a host of problems, from spoiled children to disconnected teachers, and a serious lack of organization.

My children are so happy at Portledge! The faculty is excellent and they really care about each individual child. The graduating seniors are always so kind and well-spoken. I would never, ever consider putting my children anywhere else.

I think that this school is excellent academically. The teachers really care for you and want you to succeed. Class sizes are about 15 kids, which provides a good small class environment. However, the grade sizes are very small, with an average of 30-35 kids per grade (in HIGH SCHOOL). The athletics are not very good at this school, with hockey being the only team that wins ANYTHING. Socially, the sitation is a mixed bag. Personally, I did not have a good experience SOCIALLY, but many kids who come here from public school do have a good experience. One of the great things about this school is that it is diverse. ALL of the other private schools in this area are not diverse at all, and are 95 percent white. I would definitely recommend this school for academics, as this is top notch, and I would recommend it also for people who are not having a good time at public school and want to find a great school with a beautiful campus.

Great campus, gorgeous grounds. But the school lacks organization and it is difficult to get clear information. If you child is socially strong, he or she will fair well. But quiet, shy children will be eaten up here, and faculty and staff do little to help.

Having been at Portledge for over a decade, it is my second home, and has been since I first walked through it's doors. The school supports the Arts with music and art courses available from pre-nursery through graduation, and supports academics through small class sizes and individual attention from teachers. Sports are played from grades 5-8 and are available through graduation as well. The sports coaches encourage student to do their best and believe in themselves, and promote teamwork and sportsmanship. Portledge is not only a school, it is also a community where children feel safe and cared for. I honestly love this school.

Portledge is an excellent school with a great student-teacher ratio, and robust academics instruction. One of the best schools on Long Island. The district it is physically located in gets an 8, which is less than other good public schools such as Jericho and Garden City.

Our family has been at Portledge for 8 years and we are thrilled with the results. Our children are eager to learn, stimulated by their environment, and meeting new challenges with enthusiasm. They love their school. The parent community is welcoming and inclusive. The best decision we ever made!

this is an amazing school. there are amazing art programs and sports are very fun and helpful with school, unlike other schools where sports are taken too seriously. We have winning teams, but that's not the most important thing to the Portledge community. Acedemics and teachers are great here aswell as the music programs.

This is a tiny school. The advantage of that is that the environment is one of a real community and the class sizes are small which can be great for student:teacher ratio..the drawback is that because of the size, there are limited choices. The teachers are mostly excellent-especially in the English Dept. Generally, the school emphasizes academics and sports over the arts.

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.
