The Mahopac School district has been good to our family. We expect to get out of it what we have put in. My wife and I spend time with our children on a daily basis reviewing and overseeing, but we are overall happy with our results. The football and sports programs are also well run. There is a real sense of community, straight forward and at least you know what your getting.
I couldn't disagree more with the previous negative posts. MHS provides abundant opportunities for students to excel. The 2012 MHS graduating class went to Cornell, Florida State, American, Princeton, NYU, Rochester, Boston, etc. Depending on your goals, these are among the best schools in the US. I think the previous posters simply are uninformed. MHS offers AP in all courses and concurrent enrollment in college courses at 7 local colleges. They have an excellent athletic program and athletic fields. The students are deeply involved in the community. Pick up a local paper and you will find them making a difference. Finally, their latest budget was approved, a vote of confidence in the school and the community. These are concrete examples of real success, not some magazine ranking. It s always great PR to be able to point to magazine rankings, but it s a really lazy way out when picking a school. I used to live in a top 10 school district and they have PLENTY of problems that do not surface until after you get there. MHS's fault lies in not better promoting their school. Their website has great info http://mhs.mahopac.k12.ny.us. "School Information" tab, School Profile 2012-2013.
Quality of education at the high school is nowhere near proportional to the amount of taxes paid by homeowners in Mahopac. The establishment of older teachers without proper motivation for performance keeps bringing down the quality of education there. We purchased a house here motivated in a big part by the advertised "Blue Ribbon" school system, but we are terribly disappointed by the reality...We are seriously considering moving back to Westchester before our older son goes to high school here in Mahopac.
the biggest mistake I have made is switching my children from a private school to Mahopac High School. I have had nothing but trouble in this school. my daughter is a senior and now it's tooo late to switch her back. I would not recommend this school district to anyone. They call themselves blue ribbon schools. They haven't been blue ribbon since the 90's.
This school cannot offer kids anything. They do not have enough teachers for the kids that they have. Most classes are unavailable to take because of the reduced teachers. They have 5 principles which is obviously not needed. They spend money on building a new entrance rather then hiring more teachers. I would not recommend this school.
This school offers an excellent opportunity for strong academics especially for bright students who require broad course offerings and honors classes. Much better than private school alternatives in the area.
This school is great! My kids were in private school until middle school. I see a difference. From a parent who (thought) was paying for higher quality education, I almost did an injustice to my children by not moving to Mahopac sooner. No school is perfect. The complainers and haters should be more involved with their child s education. School is not a form of babysitting. I m a fulltime working parent. If your child wants to learn, the achievement and possibilities are endless. In addition to regular classes, AP and college courses are available. Extra help in every subject is available if needed. The teachers and the principal are open to suggestions and appreciate parental involvement. The school and the neighborhood is very very safe. I am proud to announce my child will be going to a top college in New York in the fall.
I've found the high school to have great math teachers and social studies teachers..the science seems weak..I think parent involvement is great compared to my other school district (Lakeland). As for environment, the school is very large, almost the size of a small college...there is relatively no violence for this size school. As for cliques, all high schools have this problem and luckily we all live through it and get to college where it is so different. My overall review is great!
i've gone to school here, it has a good academic program and i have had some excellent teachers and learning experiences, however the other students here are outright nasty and unwelcoming especially if you are a new student. there are also many cliques in the school which result in a fair amount of social problems. in my opinion if i could restart my high school career elsewhere, in another school, i would have.
-Academic programs are fair, however their is wasteful spending on technology and useless electives. -art and music are also fair, no longer a top tier orchestra program. -too much youth violence for a suburban school. -parent involvement is non-existant
The academics at Mahopac High School are fantastic. I had some of the best teachers of my life there. I felt that the science and math at this school was the strongest, but they also have great english, history, foreign language programs as well as many other special interest classes. They also offer more AP classes than most high schools for more advanced students. The music and drama programs are excellent, as are the sports.
I like it so far, but it is school. The after school activities are very fun and our marching band pwns.
Mahopac has an excellent academic program and an enriching variety of extra-curricular activities.
A well defined and run school - some issues with parents support of academics.
