After sending three children to this school, we couldn't be happier. The faculty is truly talented and committed to teaching every child. If there were "weaker links" on the faculty a number of years ago, they are long gone. This is a strong staff. What makes this school truly stand out is the respect students have for each other, reflected from the principal on down. This is an accepting place of any and all kinds of kids. You walk through the halls and talk to kids, and they are happy and involved.
The teachers and staff are highly qualified. MHS offers a fencing team that has been a very positive influence on my boys.
Not what it used to be! Caliber of the faculty has diminished. Extremely confrontational leadership. Incompetent faculty guidance.
Mamaroneck is a phenomenal school, with great programs for high achieving students, at-risk students, and wonderful visual and performing arts programs. It's pretty much the best.
My daughter recently graduated from Mamaroneck HS. She is bright but has ADHD so her grades were mixed. The school is quite large so it is easy for kids in the 'middle' to get lost in the mix. However, the four-year Performing Arts Curriculum Experience (PACE) at the school was a fabulous experience and truly kept her fully engaged for four years. Without it, getting her to go to school would have been a struggle. One of the best things about the school is that kids from all different cliques respected each other and coexisted very well. I never heard of fights or other trouble or tension in any of the four years. Despite average grades, she was accepted into many very good schools in the midwest and even received scholarships. I would recommend the school, expecially if you have a child intereseted in performing arts.
If your child is a super star, or if he needs support, this school is for you! Lots of AP classes and a faculty devoted to the best and the brightest. If you have an average, well rounded student...beware! He is likely to fall between the cracks! Be a presence...squeaky wheel gets the grease here.
My daughter graduated from Mamaroneck High School in 2005. We were delighted with the quality of her education and believe she was given excellent tools to prepare her for her transition to college. Throughout her years at Mamaroneck High School, all parent/teacher activities which we attended were 'standing room only'. There was always an open dialogue to discuss our daughter's needs as she was progressing through her course load. The level of academic programs was both challenging and interesting as Mamaroneck offers a wide variety of AP classes in all areas of education. Our child happened to be very interested in language and art and was able to learn both Spanish and Italian while taking AP classes in other subjects as well. Her success at Syracuse University can be attributed to her hard work and to the dedicated teachers, and faculty along with high level quality of students and parental involvement.
While there are a number of quality teachers at the school, there are also a number of poor teachers who are so entrenched that they are hard to avoid, especially for students on an honors track. The high school suffers from an oversensitivty to political correctness that jeopardizes the educational value of extracurricular activities that comes down from the superintendent to the principal. At times, this has reached disturbing levels where both have refused to meet with parents. The school has a tremendous campus with a top-notch performing arts program (at least for public schools). It also has a comprehensive sports program that is on-the-whole well funded, as well as numerous clubs with varying levels of independence (extensive school oversight has led to the illegitimate disbanding of at least one club). Many graduates go on to high-level colleges, including a disproportionately high representation in the Ivy league.
Mamaroneck High School is a great school. It provides a high level of education for the students in a safe environment while allowing them the freedom to be their 'own person'. The variety of classes offered is great and the drama program is the best I've ever seen. I give this school two thumbs up!
