Not good for below average kids. Nice staff, decent building but resources are stretched to the maximum. Taxes are high and the area is expensive.
Good facility, but the school falls short on fostering intellectual curiousity. Smart kids are bored and unstimulated. No program for talented kids - a shame considering most resources go to kids needing support.
Shelter Rock has fantastic teachers that really care about their students. They make sure that the kids understand the work and if they are struggling with anything they make sure they receive the help they need. The Principle and Vice Principle are also amazing caring individuals. I don't think any other schools have a Principle and Vice Principle that care so much about their students and are so involved with all the students. Shelter Rock has such a strong academic program especially in 6th grade that the children move on to the middle school feeling confident and well prepared.
My child is about to enter his third year at the school. So far, he has been fortunate to be matched with teachers who are experienced, progressive and engaging. As a working parent, I also have a hard time reaching the principal or VP when I need to return missed calls. As a new resident to the community, trying to enroll my child and get a school tour or obtain more information about the school activities, school services and typical curriculums were very difficult. There is diversity among the student body and Diversity Day is celebrated in the district, so the multicultural social aspects are present despite the lack of early foreign language introduction in the school.
New to the school and find the principle to be very friendly and always greets the children with a smile. Teachers are great! My children love it here. Very warm and welcoming environment.
Teachers are excellent and caring. Two of my children loves the school and they enjoy their school life.
A lovely school, but way too focused on test scores. Teacher-centric and no-nonsense, expressions of creativity not high on the agenda. The Principal discourages phone and email exchanges with teachers. Prefers notes back and forth in take-home folders. If you're a working parent it's difficult to communicate with teachers and Principal. For a highly regarded district, it's not progressive in areas outside math and reading. But if the ultimate goal is strictly getting your child into a choice college, then this school/district is a winner.
You walk in there is music playing - you realize it is a student practicing, you walk down the hall and you see art work to rival that done by any high schooler, the principal is absolutely wonderful and the assistant pricipal just as great. The school is a dream. My son loves it.
