Moved my 7th grader to MAMS from another school in Nassau for the 15 - 16 year. Our experience has been fantastic. Moving to a new town at age 12 is tough, but the counselor and administration took care to make sure my child was able to transition as smoothly as possible. After about a month, he was saying that he would NEVER go back. He has made some of the nicest friends ever, and he has thrived socially and academically. He really enjoyed his teachers and his teachers all seem to be of that special breed that truly loves spending time with 12 and 13 year olds. I find the principal to be exactly what a middle school principal should be - supportive, positive, and full of school pride, but able to rein kids in when they need to be checked. The music program is outstanding - and there is SO much for these kids to do with regard to the arts, sports, and clubs. I have one more child in elementary and he already can't wait to go to MAMS because of all the great things it offers. MAMS is how middle school should be.
Really can't understand the bad reviews. Moved here last year, our daughter went into Merrick Ave knowing no one. She had the best year academically and socially. Great school, good sports programs and kids were super friendly to her. Really nice place. Very happy.
National blue ribbon school, have been very responsive to our needs. We have found it to be a friendly community for our child and he is having a great time there. Tons to do, late buses provided, extra help support, and an afternoon library/homework program.
Fires good teachers for swimming..on television. If the school board and administration make such irrational decisions which expose them to substantial liability on presumably a set of puritanical whims, I question their ability to administrate a quality education of any kind. I'd advise sending your kids somewhere else.
My Child is attending this school and it's a ZOO ,she has been shoved in the hallways ,can't get to her locker because there's no time and no room to even open it. She has been bullied and there seems to be no consequences. the Teachers are oblivious, they have no idea whats going on in their classrooms. So sad all my child worries about now is how to make through the day unharmed. Fed Up Parent
I had a son at this school two years ago and now my daughter is about to start. Having moved from Queens, this school was a breath of fresh air. The staff and students get along well and have mutual respect for each other. Academic standards are high at this school and my son was on honor roll for his entire time at the school. NYC schools should take some lessons and students, teachers and parents will all be happy. Great school.
