The administration in this school has a lot to be desired. It has changed hands more often than not in the last few years. The principal is not professional and maintains a stale smile the entire time she degrades your dilemma. She has had two assistant principals within the last two years. This is not by mistake, as she has the inability to be compassionate toward her students and parents and her staff dislike her very much. The class breakdown on inclusion students to regular education students is not balanced. Security in this school is lax. They teach to the test which is for the teachers not the students. Wishing I never moved here. The teachers seem overwhelmed with the testing, and with the class make up. It is a very stress filled environment for the children and the teachers.

can't recommend the special ed program here. Teacher is underqualified and is not good with kids. Very few options for kids in special ed, the district has in place what is has and they do not budge.

This is a solid school with very experienced teachers. My family lived in many places trying to find the right spot where we would fit in and where the schools are very strong. Birch Elementary is definately a place I would recommend as it shows much better results than other schools in the area and has a more diverse mix of students that reflects this wonderful neigborhood. Most kids from this schools will go to Calhoun High which in the past few years showed the greatest improvement placing 248th in the nation up from 263 LY (as reported by newsweek.com). By comparision Mepham High dropped to 339th from 131 in 03, to 243 in 05, 270 in 06, and JFK dropped to 409th from 295th in 07.

This school is great. The teachers show their love for education. I am a teacher in another school, another state , but I have three grandchildren in this school and I can tell for their homework and for their knowledge that the teachers are 'super'.I am very happy to know that my grandchildren are receiving a very good education.
