Having had one child graduate from jarvis and another almost entering the sixth grade. I have to say if I had known then what I know now I would have home schooled from day one. I feel that there are not alot of opportunities for gifted children and a lack of support or recognition of childs needs that work below grade level. It is sad to say that I feel that the childs interest is not always at the core of what the school does.

I agree with the lack of programs for advanced and gifted students, but plenty of support services available to those below grade level or in need of special services. We need to remember, the kids who are advanced are bored by the repetition of drilling the same information over and over for the students who just 'don't get it'! There needs to be some advanced opportunities.

My son started very badly this 1st quarter 2 F & 1 D, although his other courses were B's. The teachers have made a great effort to help him raise his grades with more one on one help.

Not too much for the gifted students, but plenty of support services available to those below grade level or in need of special services.

This school has a good reputation, however I have had a lot of problems with them. If you have patience the school is okay, if you need anything else I wouldn't recommend this school for you.

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, the New York State Department of Instruction implemented new assessments designed to be aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The new standards for proficiency in these subjects are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change. See this letter from New York's Commissioner of Education for more information on these changes.

In 2013-2014 New York used the New York State Assessments to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English language arts and math, and in grades 4 and 8 in Science. At present 2013-14 results are available only for English language arts and math. The tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of New York. The goal is for 90% of students to meet or exceed grade-level standards on the tests.
