Sadly, this local elementary school which has so much potential is just awful. A few teachers work very hard and genuinely like children and understand lifespan development and educational theory. The current principal (there have been 3 in just the last four years) is indescribably useless. She brushes off parent complaints and concerns with psychobabble ("It sounds like you and she have some healing to do in your relationship"). Every school newsletter is filled with grammatical errors and no real substance. The school nurse (also the third in two years) is an uncultured LPN who can barely string a sentence together. A few dedicated parents attempt to bring some culture and true education to this school; we have only remained there because my child's teacher moved up with the class and she is excellent. The administrative nonsense, however, leads us to look at moving or private school. The elementary drama club performance was embarrassing and heartbreaking to witness. The school is tiny, and this should mean time for children to have individual attention and adequate resources, but it is cookie-cutter, meet-state-standards, worksheets-every-single-day education. Run away!

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, the New York State Department of Instruction implemented new assessments designed to be aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The new standards for proficiency in these subjects are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change. See this letter from New York's Commissioner of Education for more information on these changes.

In 2013-2014 New York used the New York State Assessments to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English language arts and math, and in grades 4 and 8 in Science. At present 2013-14 results are available only for English language arts and math. The tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of New York. The goal is for 90% of students to meet or exceed grade-level standards on the tests.
