TOP NOTCH EDUCATION *PS397 Spruce Street School is extraordinary! We feel so fortunate that our children were accepted to this incredible school. At first my wife and I thought that the school was too strict and that the homework load was too heavy for such young children, but we have since changed our tune. Our daughters reading and writing skills jumped 2 grade levels in just a few months! Her classroom has 3 teachers in it which is above and beyond considering there are only 24 kids in her class.

Spruce is a school that is still learning to stand. Communication from the administration to parents about the direction and general overview of the students curriculum isn't strong. The communication between parents & teachers in regard to what the students are working towards on a weekly basis isn't satisfactory to me (barring a parent teacher meeting at the parents request.) A bi monthly newsletter (email) to inform parents of what the subject(s) of focus and how they can help the educator would assist all involved. Some classes combine children with learning difficulties with children who are accomplished learners. I believe the stronger students suffer for this. I'm afraid they don't challenge the class academically for fear of losing the former while the latter grow bored & fall behind their peers (at other schools). The PTA seems withdrawn & doesn't particularly draw the community together. There is a ton of potential for Spruce ,but I'm afraid their legs are still wobbly...

My school is a great place to work. We have extremely dedicated and hard working teachers. The office staff goes above and beyond to help serve families. The principal is young, innovative, and leads with laser focus. It's a great place to be!

Gracias

We are having an amazing experience at the school and feel extremely lucky to have found such an incredible public with a strong social studies curriculum. The kids get to do art and science three times a week and a music program once a week. The Tweed Courthouse classrooms are exquisite and HUGE with plenty of space for the small classes. Most impressive is the focus on social and emotional learning with ethics and social/environmental responsibility a major part of the curriculum. The Principal inspires confidence and respect. She has hired an amazing group of people in this incubation period and we are sure that she will continue to bring in more talent as the school grows. It is clear that despite the obvious growing pains, move into the new premises in 2011 and inevitable DOE curveballs, SSS with Nancy Harris at the helm, will come out on top.

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

Oops! We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Public and charter school test scores for most states come from the state Department of Education. The most common reasons we might not have this data are either that not enough students took the test or that the school was recently opened, and its scores have not yet been reported.

The NYC Department of Education asked parents, teachers and students about their school's learning environment. Results provide insight into school climate, such as whether the school is academically rigorous, safe, communicative and collaborative. Learn more

The information captured by the survey is designed to support a dialogue among all members of the school community about how to make the school a better place to learn. An overall category score is calculated for each respondent group (parents, teachers, or students) by averaging the scores of the questions within that survey category.

Category scores for each of the respondent groups are then combined to form overall category scores. Alongside the results for each school are the aggregated results across all NYC public schools, which are provided as a basis for comparisons.
