The teachers are wonderful and definitely know about positive teaching techniques that make the child confident and comfortable in learning. They have music, art, and are currently working on other extracurricular activities for a small fee. The level of parent involvement is very impressive. Our last PTA meeting was Hugh. I love the school and the staff. I have never come across such wonderful teaching staff under one roof.
I think ps59 is a great school because all the teachers are very nice and they have great test scores.
Teachers in lower grades are excellent. Things become spottier above 2nd grade. Inconsistent, and a lot of turnover (which the school likes to downplay but we've been there 5 years so...).
The KG experience was fantastic. But after 2001, the budget cutback in NYC schools has affected this school. The student teacher ratio is 22:1 and this is something not recommended at the 2nd grade. PTA is not strong to afford additional teachers in the classrooms
After all the media horror stories about the New York City public school system, I was understandably nervous about sending my daughter to one. However, my family's experiences at PS 59 have been wonderful. The school has an excellent teaching staff, a dedicated parent coordinator, and a principal and vice principal who are involved on all levels and are very approachable. The hallways and classrooms are brightly painted and cheerful. Bloomingdale's (the school's corporate sponsor) recently put in a new science lab. While there isn't a gym, there is a great rooftop playground. The school has excellent art and music programs, and numerous after-school activities (including a French classes taught by Berlitz instructors). However, the thing that makes the difference at PS 59 is the incredible level of parental involvement. PS 59 is truly what a neighborhood school should be like.
I believe this small public school has high expectations of all their students. The teachers are dedicated to teaching the curriculum. The school has strong parent involvement. The art and music program are wonderful and enriching. Art is seen throughout the school and taught by two excellent art teachers in the art studio. Music is strong and taught in the music studio by a talented music teacher who is supported by an assistant musician. Older children have lots of opportunities to expand there musical interests through the music program. Kindergarten has a partnership with Turtle Bay Music School. There is lots of support for the school community in all areas for education and social services. The PTA is involved and active. The parent coordinator provides a wealth of information and coordinates a number of workshops. The school has a nurturing, welcoming family environment.
