School has a nice community of parents and children and excellent PTA. Really enjoying sending our child to 198 and pleased with the education our child is receiving.
We have been at 198 for two years and are extremely happy with the schools. Our teachers have been amazing. They really got to know our son and his abilities and targeted his learning to his skill level. He has absolutely thrived in the school. The PTA has really taken off this year and has done some amazing fund raising. The parental involvement has grown tremendously - which was very welcomed by the admin staff and the teachers. Overally - very happy with our experience at the school.
P.S. 198 is a great school, the staff is a caring group, wants to see all kids succeed, and go as far as they could, the administration staff cares for every child in the school, this is my second family member going there.
ps 198 exceeded my expectations. All Teachers are fantastic, classes small and parents are getting more involved. This is a school which is growing in the right direction.
I have found the Principals leadership in this school is sorely lacking. The teachers seem to be afraid of her. There is very little discipline. My child has not been challenged academically.
I give this school three stars, because I believe in good faith the teachers try their best. BUT, the administration is either out to lunch or just plain overwhelmed - very disappointed in them.
Don't send your child here. To many issues, teachers, principal, families seem not to care and therefore not involved. No after school programs. Average students get ignored so they can concentrate on raising the school state exams. Discipline is non existing. Some of the teachers are great but without a good leader its hard to be consistent. The school structure is great.
This school's curriculum is really poor compared to other public schools. The children learn what is going to come out on the standardized test only and that is not the way a child is suppose to learn. Their classes are overwhelming because there are so many students in one classroom and some of the teacher's have very little patience's when it comes to handling the kids or have no control over them. I really do not recommend this school to anyone. You're best option would be to look at their lab school.
Anemic parent involvement and violent and rude students. Good and well behaved students are ignored while the teachers discipline the problem ones. Test scores have improved; the only way they could go is up!!! Average students are not even challenged.
When we first entered this school it was great. Over the past two years the school has suffered a great demise. The principal is great and always hands-on. However, the lack of discipline in the school is outrageous and the teachers really don't care about the school or the students. They are more concerned about statewide exams than the kids actually learning the basic information that will not only take them to the next level, but help them in life. They offer no extracurricular activities and the after school program is like a zoo. Very few parents even get involved. P.S. 198, the Isador Ida Strauss School was a wonderful environment years ago. However, the lack of discipline, lack of teaching experience and the poor attitudes of the staff in general is hurting the school.
