Great academics in a nurturing environment. Plus the school has it's own kitchen where students help prepare food and learn about nutrition and how to follow a recipe and how to double it or halve it. Students eat with their teachers family style, and the food is healthy and delicious. The school truly takes great care of its students - from their minds to their bellies!
Our son has been at Studio since he was two--he's now nine--and we have been very happy. It is a close community of really caring teachers and a supportive administration. We were debating between St. Hilda's and Studio, two schools that could not be more different! But we are so glad we went the Studio route (nothing against St. H's) because we feel their approach has worked extremely well for our son. He is a star in some classes and struggles in others and Studio really supports him on both sides of his academic coin, if you will. We love Studio and recommend it strongly to any family that is looking for a unique, supportive educational experience.
My daughter has been at Studio School for 6 years. (Ages 3-9.) She's gone from building with blocks, to collaborating with classmates and building an elaborate model of the hudson river and its surrounding environment. She's gone from eating rice-cakes at snack time, to discovering how taste buds work, and experimenting with which parts of the tongue taste different things. She's gone from learning that cow starts with letter C, to reading and discussing many exciting books, and discovering the journeys that characters, authors, and readers take. And lastly, she's going through the whole Studio School experience expressing herself and caring about herself, as well as listening to and caring about others. Overall, the kids do creative, exciting, and challenging work at the Studio School, and also have tremendous personal growth.
My daughter has been attending The Studio School for one year now and I find it to be a very supportive and nurturing environment. I'm pleased at how safe the children are made to feel about expressing themselves, which serves to boost their self-confidence in group settings. My daughter is on the shy side and I see her becoming more confident in a group setting because her opinion and input is encouraged and valued by her teachers. The teachers, by the way, have been amazing. Extremely attentive, attuned to each child, and very supportive to my wife and I as parents. We feel we've become better parents through working with the teachers along the way. While it is a challenge for us to afford the tuition, it has been worth its weight in gold for setting what I see is a solid foundation in my daughter's academic career. She's now learned that school can be fun, safe, and exciting so I hope that she'll carry that with her throughout her life.
This is our second year at The Studio School. Our son is enthusiastic and excited about school. He wakes up and hurries us to school. He likes his teachers, his friends and Mr. Bunny (the class rabbit). What we like about Studio is The Kitchen and Science Program, Work Period and Group. The Kitchen and Science Program is teaching our son math, conversions and measurements. We like that our son is learning math and having fun doing it. Work Period is something we hear a lot around our house. This is when the students build and create projects using an assortment of materials. These projects can be a book, a sculpture made of clay, a painting or drawing. Our son's favorite is creating original art from recyclable materials. Because of Work Period our son wants to recycle everything in the house and use it to create art. Group occurs in the morning when the entire school assembles and the students express themselves in an open forum. It s amazing to listen to our son express himself and hold conversations with adults and his peers.
I am in a specialized public high school now, and graduated from The Studio School at the end of the 8th grade. I feel exceptionally well prepared for the academic challenges of high school because Studio taught me how to be a student. There is an emphasis on how to learn and how to think and these are the skills that have helped me with my current classes. I read 4 full length Shakespeare plays in middle school and these gave me the foundation for reading difficult literature in high school. I was surprised that when I was a freshman, many of my classmates had not read any Shakespeare and while I was comfortable with the language, they were struggling. Socially, I feel that I can relate to my teachers and classmates effectively so that I can collaborate and get help when I need it. In my school now, there is an emphasis on public speaking, which I am able to accomplish with ease because there are many opportunities at Studio to speak in a group. I also learned how to listen when others are speaking and to respond to their ideas. Overall, Studio taught me how to do my work to the best of my ability whether I liked it or not and this has made me feel very fulfilled.
When I reflect on the education I received during my 8 years as a student at the Studio School, I am in in awe of how enlightened the approach to learning was at the time. I received a full, well-rounded education delivered in such a natural, seamless manner that I didn't realize I was being 'schooled,' so to speak. The Studio School was years ahead of the status quo when I attended and have continued to evolve up until this day.
It's such a relief to find a place where children can learn to be themselves in a way that makes the communication between parents and children more harmonious. People always say "how did you do teach him that?" But it's him, it's the environment where he is supported every day at Studio, not us (we are learning too, all the individual attention and communication from teachers, how to be parents, how to help him grow)! We are always kind of surprised, how he does things on his own, how he speaks up for himself. At two and half, he's his own man. Like he suddenly wanted to use the potty (we never tried to "train" him) or when he suddenly brings his dishes from the table to the sink without nagging (we hear about how our friends are always on their kids, always a struggle, and it doesn't stick) , or he says "Mom, I feel tired. Can we go to bed now?" Shocker! He knows and trusts what his body needs! Or says "Mom, I'm angry! I don't like that" very clearly, without a tantrum or throwing stuff. This is learning to me. Learning to communicate. Learning to work through conflict, to connect as a family, to recognize that everyone has their own path and respect it. Studio fosters this.
I am a previous student and I would not recommend this school. They place a high emphasis on the arts which takes away valuable time from learning the core subjects like history. At my time at studio I never had a history class like Social Studies which shocked all my high school teachers. When I went to high school, my 9th grade math teacher told me "You re very smart but I am very surprised you don't know these basics." Unfortunately, they spend too much of a student s education on murals, preparing for shows, and art works for the annual gala. In Studio there is also favoritism for the rich and white. Contrary to popular belief public schools are VERY GOOD! I receive more attention in a public high school and feel more academically prepared. I have found a great balance maintaining my 4.0 and individuality. A Studio School student will not find that. When they leave they find that they are academically and/or socially behind because there is a lack of diversity in Studio. The times may have changed now but during my time, there were only a handful of minority students. The world beyond Studio is not cuddled it is tough and they lack to offer their students real world experience.
Having recently toured The Studio School I could not agree more with the parents who have wonderful things to say about the school. The community seems to be a very supportive and the teachers and staff seem sensitive to the learning pace of each child. I like the feel of the community and he will hopefully be attending there in the fall. We are all excited about the choice.
The Studio School has been a wonderful experience since day one! The faculty and Head of School have shown great interest in every and all students as well as the parents. This school is a very close knit community - exactly what I was looking for my child's education experience. The events they hold are fantastic from things like "A Lousy Comedy" - which is when the students perform their own interpretations of Shakespeare's works to the annual Baker's Delight fundraiser - which works mainly from the parents participation of baking and selling their specialties. I can go on listing so much more! I would consider attending one of their tours or open houses to see for yourself!
My child and our family have benefited greatly from being at Studio School. I appreciate the support the school has given to me as a parent in understanding where my child is in his development. I have always felt confident in his teachers. During the parent-teacher conferences, I have been amazed at how on-target they have been with regard to who he is, his strengths and the things with which he may be having some difficulty. I have also appreciated the parent development meetings and the willingness of the head of school to work with our family on various things such as bedtime routines, setting limits, etc. The community is warm and close-knit lots of playdates. There are opportunities to be involved if you are so inclined.
The Studio School enables and empowers the individual growth of each child on all levels. Students graduate from the school as independent learners who are self-motivated and highly educated. The principle is an experienced leader in education who has been in the field for over 30 years. Her commitment to the students in the school is second to none. The community is caring, supporting and giving and parent involvement is fully encouraged not just in fund-raising, which is extremely important, but also in wonderful community events such as the Thanksgiving Feast, Annual Gala, Multicultural Festival, Annual Picnic etc. Parents are themselves educated along with their children and take an active and participative part in their child's educational journey. Each teacher in the school is fully in tune with every student's individual educational needs. I am a current parent whose children have been in the school now for over 5 years!
My daughter is a graduate of the Studio School and I highly recommend this school. The faculty throughout my daughter's schooling has been remarkably supportive, both empathic and challenging always attuned to her needs. My daughter was very well prepared academically and was above grade in math and writing. Her high school teachers comment on her ability to work successfully in a group as well as alone. I fully credit the Studio School for this training. The parents are very involved in varied events; multi-cultural festival, bake sale, annual gala auction, etc. I always enjoyed the fun spirited and warm sense of community of Studio.
