As an educator and parent, I looked for a Jewish day school that would offer a strong academic and intellectually rigorous environment, as well as a wholesome, nurturing place for my children to grow socially and emotionally. Then, on top of these expectations, I want my children to love Jewish values, rituals, history, and Hebrew language! Solomon Schechter of Manhattan has exceeded my high expectations, as students are active learners, caring citizens, and "mensches." This small school of talented leaders and teachers and new facility is a wonderful place of learning for Jewish children and families.
Schechter Manhattan has been a wonderful educational setting for my son. I sent him there precisely because it was small and provides individualized attention so that his areas of academic strength would be challenged and his challenges would be strengthened. The school absolutely delivered on this promise. The school's curriculum overall is engaging and thoughtful and its approach to teaching religious subjects and prayer is unlike any other Jewish day school in this city. My son has grown intellectually and spiritually beyond my expectations. In addition, the school community of parents and school staff are a warm, diverse group of people that are supportive and caring.
This school does not live up to its marketing or its ostensible approach. Calls itself child-centered and progressive, but demands that children sit still and face forward. Says it teaches the joys of the spiritual Jewish experience, but limits children's expression during times of prayer. Says that, by being small, can tailor work to individual needs, when in fact pushes out children who require any additional attention. Says that parents play a significant role in the development and change in curriculum, when all is controlled by the head of school who reacts to any new suggestions with defensiveness and hostility. Schechter has been a terribly disappointing, if not damaging, experience for my child and my family.
We love this school. Not only are our children in love with their school experience and learning wonderfully, they are also in a warm and caring environment that is helping make them warm and caring people.
