Shuang Wen under the current leadership is A BREATHE of FRESH INNOVATIVE AIR. I appreciate Prinicpal Iris Chiu and I empathize with her due to the constant harrassment and ill treatment from previous parents who were unhappy with change. She is doing a wondeful time with our children, it is a shame that some parents need more work than the children in the realm of self restraint and intellectual discourse. Principal Chiu during this uncomfortable transition has maintain her professionlism and our children were able to achieve the same rating on Standardized Testing which kept Shuang Wen under good standing. Every School community there is room for improvement.
Still a great school despite sub par leadership - As much as I miss last administration I think this is still a very good school. My opinion is that the old system with SWAN after school is better than this 50/50 bilingual system. I respect parents' decision in taking their kids out of the school because they have no faith in the current prinicipal. However I want to ask these parents to stop saying the school is "not good anymore" and that all the "good" teachers left the school. Show some respect for the people that are still in the school and the many teachers that are still trying to help our kids. From what I see, the teachers at this school are all working hard and they don't deserve that. As for Ms. Iris Chiu, you cannot gain our respect by trying to stay out of trouble by putting up a wall. You need to be more involved, know your students, know your teachers and motivate everyone. This is your chance to prove all those parents who left the school wrong!
It's sad to say, but previous comments are true. This school needs better leadership. Issues need to be addressed in real time. Every parent should feel that their voice counts and that their child is safe. Children should be pushed but not to the extreme.
There is no Principal leadership in this school. She hides behind closed doors. Both the parents and the children do not know who the principal is. It's a shame. This is the first school I have been to where the Principal doesn't even partake in school activities or events. She only shows face when its to her benefit. She wont allow Parent participation because she is afraid the parents will find something. If the Principal allowed the parents to be more involved things would be a lot different. Grades have dropped drastically, incidents go unreported. Bullying is not addressed. This was a great school and is failing more and more each year. We need a new principal. Iris Chiu is not it. Our children need someone who knows them and cares for them. NOt one who pushes issues under the rug. Give our kids what they deserve. A fair chance at a GREAT education.
I have reviewed this school in the past and find it becoming a good school with the possibility of it becoming great. There was a problem with a group of parents who didn't belong in the school. This is being addressed, and I hope that they are all removed at some point. There was also a problem with some teachers which I will not address suffice to say they have been removed. The school is now addressing Dual Language grade by grade my sadness is that many children won't benefit as they are in the upper grades and will be gone by the time this is fully implemented. I think that the current leadership is doing a yeoman's job with transforming the school as she has faced hostile parents and staff that does not respect real work. I say to all the parents there the school was founded to help low income students attain academic excellence, if you are not happy leave. Let Shaung Wen thrive and grown. District 1 parents put Shaung Wen as your only choice if you want to get in. Let them see that Learners come in all colors.
from the number of students and teaching staffs leaving the school, i am sure that the current principal is not doing a good job. She only helps those that stands on her side and not doing ANYTHING for the school. When Ms. Ling Ling was there, she interacts with EACH student and she can call out EVERYONE of their names so easily. We really miss our previous principal and we are happy that she won the case finally!
I would like to say that the leadership of Ms. Iris Chiu is extraordinary as she has come from dealing with teaching and being a Vice-Principal in Brooklyn. Ms. Chiu has the credentials, and understands the pedagogy of Dual Language and also what it takes to motivate and educate teachers and students alike. Although there are a group of parents who advocate for the former administrator, either they are complicit in her wrongdoing or ignorant of the fact that she took money meant to educate children and gave it to a program that was a 501c3 and had no business taking school funds. It is not within the boundaries set up here to go into this, but it is enough to say that children did well and graduated without the former administrator and will continue to improve with someone dedicated to education. The D.O.E. and its former Chancellor have questions to ask when there were complaints and they were ignored for over 4 years, I can only say that whatever help the current principal needs should be forthcoming from Chancellor Walcott immediately, so that Principal Chiu can turn P.S. 184 into a true Beacon of Light.
SWAN students with a score of 600 or above for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade on Chinese SAT II prep test are 38%, 63%, and 68% respectively. Grades 1-5 took the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) for grades 6-8. Approximately 98% of 1st & 2nd grade students passed the CCCC Sprouting Level, which included 400 Chinese phrases. For grades 3-5, students took different levels based on their Chinese levels; 40% of student population passed the CCCC Seedling Level, which included 700 Chinese phrases, and another 41% of them passed the CCCC Blossoming Level, which included 1100 Chinese phrases. All of the 6th 8th grade students were assigned to take different test levels of TOCFL based on their Chinese levels. The TOCFL includes five levels: Level 1 to Level 5, which are equivalent to Novice Level, Intermediate-Low & Intermediate- Mid Level, Intermediate-High Level, Advanced-Mid Level, and Superior Level, respectively, based on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency Guidelines. The percentages of 6th-8th grade students passing Level 1 to Level 4 of TOCFL are 7%, 19%, 26%, and 6%, respectively, and two 8th grade students passed TOCFL Level 5!
Need some opinion!! My child is going to Kindergarten this fall. She accepted by ps 184 and private school Transfiguration school NYC. I know both are good schools. I have a hard time making decision of which school for my child.Is there anybody give me some advise? Many Thanks
Let's make it clear: was Shuang Wen tecnically a real dual language? NO, it was a regular english public school with optional 1000$/year chinese afterschool from 3.30 to 5.30. Is S. W. now a real Dual Language school"? YES is a public school with 50% program in chinese and 50% in english and same optional chinese afterschool. Was S. W. a good school? Yes, it was an EXCELLENT school with the highest scores among NYC public scool. Is the "new" S. W. a good school? We'll find out after few years of experimental program to please a power game that has nothing to do with the ethic of education. I believe in protecting what has been proved to be, for years, an outstanding schoo. Furthermore: after living in China for many years, and studying Chinese languageI can confirm the afterschool has by far a higher quality of teaching and academic compared to the new system. You don't send your kids here because it's cool to say NIHAO, SW is facing the risk to become one of the many mediocre schools in NYC. Is there any other afterschool for 1000$ in NYC? I can't see any positive purpose for removing it given the fact that is cheap, great and optional. Hope nobody will have to regret this choi
I know it's hard to do, but if you try to ignore the political battles that are happening between the administration and the parents, you will see that in the classrooms, great things are happening. My daughter who didn't read when she entered K, shocked my husband and I when she started to read by herself sometime in October. We only speak Mandarin at home, so this was all due to the incredible teaching of her Kindergarten teacher. It is true that there is a strong focus on academics, but how is that not a good thing? One should not forget that the kids have free play time, recess, gym, music, art, etc. as well as school trips (although a lot less than before this investigation tied up the school's finances). The children learn to bond with one another and my daughter asks me to plan paydates outside of school.
Under our principal Ms.LingLing, Shuang Wen WAS a great school! no pain no gain. students must study very hard here. Since Ms.LingLing is not here,(2011 Sept) it is a big mess here. I rate this school 5 starts-- is for Ms.LingLing! Ms. LingLing we miss you much!
Shuang Wen is a great school, but not for my child.The 2009-10 school year was her last. Although the teaching staff was great, there really is no plan for children struggling in Chinese.The already long day of 8:30 - 5:30 was extended to 8- 5:30 for extra Chinese tutoring.My daughter's hours in school exceeded my own work day! As she moved up in grades, her frustration only grew and as much as the idea of my child being fluent in Mandarin appealed to me, a burned out 8 year old did not.It was not an easy decision to move her, but I know it was the right one.Again, Shuang Wen is a great school for the right child. I don't feel like I didn't work hard enough as a parent, or my daughter did not do her part as a student, it just didn't work for her. Good luck!
First off, this is a great school. The after school chinese program is very good and forces the kids to learn. Parents who tend not to want to make an effort (because it is such a demanding school) don't send their kids here. As a result, most of the kids are well behaved and smart. Most parents are involved which helps the school be even better. The class work is very demanding, so the kids learn a lot. If you send your kids here, they will graduate very smart. My daughter is 6 years old can hold a conversation in mandarin. The graduating class trip was to China and The Chinese New Year show this past year was amazing!! The show was like a off-broadway production. Now, with the goods there are always bads. The school work is very demanding not to mention the day starts about 8:30 and ends about
This program is really too rigorous and inflexible for 3-to-6 year olds. But my 6-year old is completely fluent in Mandarin, a language I do not speak. It is amazing to watch him understand and respond when spoken to in Chinese. Families have to be completely committed to this program as a lifestyle. If they are willing to accept the many drawbacks and if they prioritize bilingual education they will be happy with the school.
Parent that admits their children into this school knows the long hours, academic challenge, high expectations from students, teachers and parents. We work together as a team. Graduates return to school to thank teachers and Ms Lingling, principal, for their hard work.
My Child go there, she are very happy and like this school. she told me she like her classmates and teacher ms. william.
It is a fantastic dual language school. All the staffs and teachers are kindly. Parents are nice, and she can learn both English and Chinese.
My grandchildren attend Shuang Wen School. I have met their principal and their teachers. They care about each child's progress academically and personally. My grandchildren speak English and Chinese. They are very happy and like their school. They are receiving a well rounded education in a supportive and caring environment.
PS 184 offers a bi-lingual education in Manadrin beginning at pre-K through 8th grade. I do not know of many other schools that offer such a curriculum.
