My daughter recently started Kindergarten. She is having a great time. She comes home with a smile everyday. Her Hebrew comprehension is growing as is her confidence in reading and writing (English). The teachers and administrators are caring and kind. I am thankful we chose a school with such a child-centric approach to learning.
If you want the creativity of progressive education (including theme-based curricula and constructivist approach to learning), the rigor of challenging academics (e.g., math and Hebrew groups that offer accelerated learning by several grades), the nurturing and support of a meschlechkeit and "gesher" (tribe) environment for all children, then Solomon Schechter School of Manhattan is the right place to send your child. We are thrilled by the school, its dynamic and thoughtful leadership and staff, and by the strong community of families. Can't say enough about the school!
This is our seventh year as a Solomon Schechter family. My two sons are thriving, and I feel we owe a debt to the school. The teachers have been genuinely caring, and the administrators have been very responsive to our requests and the special learning needs my children have had from time to time. I have at times had to place a lot of trust in the somewhat unique learning environment - there are few tests in the lower grades and there is more of an emphasis on learning to think than learning to spell, for example - but I have to say I am seeing it all come together in my middle-schooler, who now has tremendous study skills, can present coherently in front of a large group, navigates the social scene with skill and compassion, knows how to construct and pursue an academic argument . . . and yes, even can spell. We have been very happy with SSSM and we know we made the right choice.
I came to Schechter School of Manhattan with a critical lens, as I work as an educator with several high performing schools and my child had qualified for G+T. I wanted an intellectually curious and child-centered school culture where Jewish and secular learning were meaningful and interconnected. Schechter has exceeded most of my expectations and I now have 2 children at the school. The staff is consistently strong and nurturing and their accommodations for diverse learners are impressive.
I'm indebted to Schechter Manhattan for the education my children have received thus far. 1. Children develop a love for learning, and critical thinking is encouraged. 2. Respect for one another is valued above all else. 3.Economically diverse student body. 4. Inviting to all levels of observance. Certainly, if you don't want time spent on any religious study, then it's not for you. But, if that appeals to you or doesn't "bother" you too much, then you should see for yourself what a truly special place it is.
My child has been at Schechter Manhattan for four years and it has been a very positive experience for my child and for our family. The teaching level has been consistently high, the children's needs, both social and academic, generally approached with sensitivity and caring. With regard to the previous reviewers--of course it's sad when, for whatever reason, a school doesn't work out for someone's child. But that is very, very far from the norm at this school.
My child attended Solomon Schechter for two years. It was a terrible experience. The secular academics were weak. The Judaucs a little stronger. The administration only liked families and children who didn't require any extra assistance or focus. Families that expressed concerns had their children labeled. Nightmare. Stay away, Seriously. A horrible, horrible place.
I have to agree with above poster. My child was abused emotionally at this school repeatedly. The administrators in this school should not be allowed to be in the vicinity of any children. My child is happy and doing so well academically and socially at another private school now. Schechter was a horrid experience and I really want other parents to know this and stay away.
