New York City Department of Education

Know your school choice options in New York City Department of Education.

In New York City you are assigned to one of 32 Community School District zones, depending on where you live. In some zones, you may choose any school within the zone. In other zones, priority is given for particular schools based on your address. You may also attend a school outside your zone or a charter school, provided there is space. For kindergarten, you should apply in person at every school you are interested in before the deadline in early March. If you are interested in applying to schools in District 1 and District 3, you should apply at the Borough Enrollment Office.

For middle school, you have priority to attend a middle school near where you live but you also have the option to attend one of the citywide middle schools, many of which have a theme such as science or the performing arts. You should apply to all schools that you are interested in.

For high school, you can attend a high school in your zone or one of the new small schools that enroll about 500 students. Many of these small schools have a theme, such as science, law, business or the arts. You may also attend a charter school or one of the nine specialized high schools that require a special test and/or audition.

Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as "in need of improvement" have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.
