You're going to have to narrow it down for us a bit. There are literally hundreds of private and public schools. There's also a byzantine application process for public that takes place in 8th grade (actually right now) . If you can afford private ($35K+) you might be better off hiring a consultant--I assume you're moving here, because if you already live in NYC, you know most of this. Parochial will be cheaper. The very top public schools get as many as 30,000 applications for under 1,000 spots. There's a specific test to even qualify for an application. If your child will be entering above 10th grade in the fall, then I think most highly rated public schools will off the table for you.74398
