Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Flat out amazing school. This is a special place that is run by a dedicated, passionate, amazing group of educators. The parents are fanatical supporters of the staff and administration. It is by far the best school in the neighborhood and one of the best in Manhattan. The kids are nice and come from motivated, stable homes. The teachers are rock stars. If you can get you child in her, you must.

We moved to the UES last year from a very good suburban public school, and I had trepidation about moving her to NYC pub schools. Everyone upstate was horrified at the idea of bringing her into NYC to live and going to a NYC public school. Little did they know! I couldn't be more thrilled with the school. The UES takes education seriously, and the benefits to the kids get are just amazing. Targeted after school help, quality classroom equipment, challenging lessons, educational field trips, recitals (even dance lessons!), the quality of education is just superb. Serious, positive parent involvement as well in PTA. And kids are just really nice kids and the neighborhood is comfortable. Everyone was very welcoming. So glad I made the leap and moved into the city. My daughter found a home in this school and thrives and I get to walk her to school everyday and spend time with her face to face. From what I see the teachers bring their A game every day. I don't regret a thing.

Ps 290 Manhattan New School is an amazing school - the teachers are very talented, caring, and do an amazing job of keeping a class of 20+ focused and learning. I have spent a couple of days "observing" and was totally blown away at how the teachers are able to keep the kids engaged. We are much happier at Ps 290 than the 2 private schools before - no attitudes, no pretension, just a great neighborhood school with a focus on the kids

This school is amazing. I am a snobby, UES parent who would have never selected a public school for their child. However, my child ended up there. I cannot be more thrilled and impressed with the quality of the teachers, administration and entire staff. It is a warm, nurturing, loving environment from the principal on down.

PS290's excellent reputation is based on the school it used to be, not what it is now. The curriculum emphasizes writing, but neglects fundamentals such as spelling and grammar. My daughter just learned what a verb is... because I had to explain it to her. Math is generally weak, as other reviewers have noted. They teach to the middle, ignoring high performing students (except kids of PTA board members). Teacher quality is inconsistent. A few are excellent, but most are mediocre at best. My daughter's current teacher has not sent home corrected homework since January & brazenly plays favorites in the classroom. The current principal is more interested in playing politics than effectively administering the school. She plays favorites with the children of the PTA board, placing them with better teachers and prioritizing them for enrichment programs. As a result, the PTA operates as a catty insiders club, with board members jockeying to keep their posts and keeping outsiders in their place. Their fundraising efforts are laughable, and communication with the parents is unsatisfactory. Finally, it is 140-150% overcrowded, which the principal wants to maintain for her budget

Our daughter started Kindergarten this year and we could not be more thrilled! She absolutely loves the school, and so do we! Our daughter has benefited from the warm and nurturing environment. They make it fun for the kids and that makes them love going to school. Her teacher is excellent, and we sometimes notice our daughter imitating her (really looks up to her as a role model). They have extended day sessions for kids needing additional help - our daughter's fine motor skills have benefited from this program. They have a good after school program as well. I love morning drop offs, as the back yard is abuzz with excited happy kids and energetic parents. The PTA is very active with fund-raising. I've personally been able to contribute by doing a guest session on music. Due to it's limited real estate, the school does not have a spacious auditorium and it's cafeteria doubles up as the gym, but the gym teacher makes the most of it. There is some homework even in K, which I like... The principal, vice principal, teachers and staff at MNS are excellent, and I highly recommend this school...

My son is in the 5th grade, so this is our last year at the school. We will miss the community feeling of MNS. Most of the teachers are dedicated to teaching and go above and beyond for their students. The school really helps to bring out the students creativity in the writing and the publishing parties they have help give the students a sense of pride . They could work on grammer and spelling more in the earlier years. the type of Math they teach has always been an issue. My son (as most of the kids we know) has had a tutor to keep him on track in math. The parents really help out in the school and make it a better place with their volunteering and fundraising efforts. The school offers interesting lunch clubs and after school programs. They have enrichment classes and extened day help for the students that need it. We have made many friendships along the way and some special memories to last a lifetime.

This is a very solid school - great writing program, passionate teachers, nicely managed despite the fact that the school has been very popular & crowded over the years. The Manhattan New School has an incredible sense of community. Unlike the vast majority of schools in America where children are bused in or dropped off by car, MNS students walk to school each day with their parents, passing local retailers, police officers, construction workers, crossing guards.... There is an incredible sense that your child is a member of a unique social group that is focused on their achievement and well being. In a society that seems to grow busier and more frenetic each year, it is remarkable how we all come together each morning on the playground or on the sidewalk to share stories and experience this life process together.

I love it. My son is 5 and in Kindergarten and I can't wait until my baby goes too. The teaching body is outstanding. They all keep the parents well informed of the curriculum and expectations. There is never lack of volunteers and people with new creative ideas, from how to raise more money to what other afterschool class can be offered, to what other school trip or activity can be organized I feel this school gives much breadth to the children (more than some private schools in the neighbourhood) and they grow to become very well rounded. In addition, parents share this sense of working for the children and are very approachable.

This is a great school, parent below with her 'sigh' and 'insider knowledge' must have gone to Brearley as we have had a great experience at MNS (two kids over 11 years) No it is not perfect, but the biggest problem (as in many schools) is that the same parents show up for meetings and volunteer but the those that do not usually are reactive instead of being involved with the community. As for Investigations, not perfect, but please show me the studies that say long term, it is a failure.

This is a good school but does not live up to the hype (what school could?). They try very hard and basically the teachers are good--if a bit too young and green. It is a strange combo of impossible expectations and not challenging enough. Somehow there is too much stress on drawing as a complement to writing, which i cannot figure out, and the math book they have (Pearson's Investigations)n is HORRIBLE--rote, boring drill-down stuff that could make anyone hate math. The stress on those contrived leveled readers for the little ones is also not a great sign--there's no meat to the reading content. That said, you are not paying 35K a year, so, you cannot expect Brearley. There's either too much communication or not enough...sigh...we're lucky we have what we have, still...

PS 290 is basically a good school until they hit 3rd grade and are not properly prepared for the full load and responsibility of the fourth grade. The children do not learn proper grammar, learn multiple ways of doing math and are told to figure out which way is most efficient. I am disappointed with the school this year and do not plan on returning for a lacking fifth grade as well; beware the fantasy falls apart and it is a rude awakening.....

The curriculum is presented through many interesting projects abd stresses writing and critical reading. The culture and tone of the school is very professional. Sharor Hill is the best principal I've ever observed. She deserves 5 stars. A few teachers, such as my child's this year, tend to scream, and belittle, which is in conflict to what Sharon expects and projects as part of the school culture.

This was a good school, but not any more! I found it out too late! I'm very disappointed with the Principal's administration. Most senior teachers were gone. I was told that this school was strong at writing. But after senior teachers left, it became history. Lucky to the children who graduated. The way they teach Math is impossible to survive in the middle school. For example, my friend's child learns 2-digits multiplication / division at 3rd Grade at another public school at Queens. At MNS they teach this at 4th &5th Grade. The social study and science program are very weak, too. Students have no individual table and chair to sit on. One mother complain about after her child goes to this school, she doesn't know how to hold a pencil in the right way. I feel guilty of sending my child to this baby sitting like school. I don't know how can it get an 'A'. The academic is awful. It doesn't meet our expectation at all (according to most parents). Yes, the teachers are very nice maybe too nice. I give it a 2-stars instead of 1-star because most children have good manner, and so far the school is safe never hear about any gang activity. The only good thing about the school is the families & children. Most children are very good behaved. The state wide scores haven't fall apart is because of the parents take care of their children's academic themselves. It's wasted of time sending my child over there. I wish I could find out earlier. Hope you don't make the same mistake.

Our daugter is in the kindergarten. Typical weekly assignment is to read 5 level 2 books per week (about 20-30 min of reading daily). So the reading program is not bad. However the math is not that good: they just do counting instead of addition and subraction. I talked to parents of kids who attend PS 6 and PS 77 (Lower Lab), it seems that these three schools are very similar and comparable. Actually it would be nice to compare PS 290, 6, 158 and 77 (lower lab) in term of performance (for average, top 25% and bottom 25% students).

PS290 is a great public school. Our two children have had excellent teachers from which they are receiving great educations at PS290 ('Manhattan New School'). The communication from the teachers has been timely and value-added. The School administrators listen to our concerns and comments and take both pro- and reactive action. Parent involvement is high with many helping out on a consistent basis. As with most New York City Public Schools, the space for athletic activity is limited. (The second graders do get swimming lessons at Asphalt Green.) School provides a free hot breakfast and a solid after school program is available. PS290 provides a very fine education in a traditional and friendly environment as illustrated by PS290's student test scores. If you want your child to have a great public school experience, and are zoned for it, come learn and grow at MNS/PS290.

Our daughter attends Kindergarten at MNS. While it is supposed to be one of the best schools, my impression is very mixed. Some teachers try hard, others not. Almost no commuinication forthcoming from the teachers. Very weak on math. Parents get pestered with money solicitations from the school on a weekly basis, sadly, it usually is the only communication you get from the school. We will send our kid to private school at the end of the year.

MNS is an excellent school that has been troubled in recent years by frequent changes of administration. Many of the senior teachers have left, so the teachers who remain, while very talented, are fairly junior. It remains strong on literacy. It uses constructivist math, although less faithfully than a few years ago (which is, in my opinion, an improvement). The science program is weak. They added Spanish this year, which is a huge improvement. The emphasis is on group work and cooperative learning; if this is a good fit for your child this is probably a great school for him/her.

Manhattan New School is an energetic, bustling and nurturing environment which fosters a love of learning in children. There is a strong emphasis on literature and literacy. As early as Kindergarten and First Grade, students explore and synthesize the world around them through their writing. The teachers are very capable in teaching math, and there is a math specialist who offers support. The science program is weak. The school makes great use of the city. National Dance Institute runs a program for fourth graders, the second graders swim at the Asphalt Green olympic size pool, and there are field trips to the opera, botanical gardents and museums. There is tremendous parent involvement in all aspects of school life. Unfortunately, the school is a victim of its own success. The student body has outgrown the facility. The classes are large and space is a big issue.

This is a wonderful school. My child is extremely happy and is enjoying a great learning environment. The school is forced by the District to use constructivist math but they find ways to make sure that the kids can actually work algorithms. It does not have the inclusive feel of its early years as it has become a much more UES school but it still has a very involved parent body. The newish principal is a terrific blend of the first two principals and has made the academic standards even more rigorous. One of the best schools in NYC, public or private.

This wonderful school has been and remains one of the best in NYC. A dedicated principle and excellent (for the most part) teachers make a warm and nurturing place for students to learn. Somewhat overcrowded and needs a gym but still remains the school for my child.

The school is extremely overcrowded with over 100 more students than their capacity (they have had to build class rooms out of the auditorium and the cafeteria doubles as the gym). A school this small should be limting their enrollment to the students who are zoned for it but it seems anybody with a connection to the Board of Ed gets their kid in the school because at one point it had a good reputation (Why I don't know- the overcrowding has definitely pulled the quality of the school down). If you want your child crowded into a small classroom that is out of compliance with the Board mandates, this school is for you.

I am a parent of two children that have attended MNS (PS290). My children were in both the general education classes and the CTT. The curriculum is both rich and challenging. The teachers not only listen but are responsive and make themselves available. The support staff is professional, qualified and caring. The principals, both past and present, have not only made themselves available to us but have worked in partnership with us to ensure the academic well-being of our children. MNS celebrates its children and embraces their families. In my opinion, this far outweighs any of the shortcomings inherent in most public schools today.

The problem with this school is that they have developed a reputation that they have bought into and ignored at the same time. The school is a zoned school but it is extremely overcrowded due to out of zone students with connections getting into. The President of the PTA lives across town! And he lives in the same building as the former principal. And in a meeting he had the gall to say that no out of zone students were accepted. The new principal is in way over her head. She is totally unavailable to parents. The teachers are burn outs dealing with overcrowded classrooms and can't recognize when a student is either overwhelmed by the curriculum or bored by it because it is too slow for them. The classrooms are totally disorganized. This school is one that needs to stop resting on its laurels and get back to where it was.

Our child attends this progressive school that creates a warm nuturing environment where children flourish. The atmosphere is created by extremely motivated teachers and a super principal. The principal is intimately involved, knows every childs name, every classes lesson plan and even reads every single report card before it is sent home. A trip to the principal gets a child sympatethic ear and a twizzler. This school is a jewel in NYC. It is hard to believe you do not have to pay tutition.

I feel very lucky that my daughter attends this wonderful school. The children are treated in a very kind manner and the school as a whole has a real community feeling. parents are welcomed to be part of the school family, and the learning is terrific. textbooks are not used, the teachers write their own lessons based on the curriculum. when one walks through the halls there is no yelling, and if you look at the classrooms, you can see real thought and learning. if your child is lucky enough to attend ps 290, you will probably be very happy with this public school.
