Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Art and Design High School has several resources for students. Unfortunately the teaching and supporting faculty does little to support the students. If a child is driven and self-motivated, then they might to fairly well terms of grades. This school does not teach to varied learning styles or seem to care that children need to feel emotionally safe in order to focus and be engaged. We have had several negative experiences stemming from lack of communication from teachers. This is a big problem.

I first thought that this school would be wonderful for my sons artistic talents. Unfortunately, it has turned into a total nightmare. His schedule not once but twice. The second time it was done, he wasn't even notified of the change, neither were his old teachers. I would NOT recommend this school. There is absolutely NO communication.

I 100% do NOT recommend this school. The administration is VERY RUDE, and unhelpful! I tried applying, and they rejected me, because I wanted to enroll into twelfth grade, and not ninth. The principal had the nerve to look me in the eye and imply that I would tarnish the school if he accepted me, by saying that they "do have a reputation to upkeep." He tried to convince me that I do not need this school, and that I should get my GED and go to college. He told me that they are not giving me a rejection, but not a yes, either. Also, I will thank them one day. I did not feel thankful at all for having wasted over three hours of my day (Oh, YES, because even though they did not even CONSIDER to let me enroll, they gave me the audition test to take anyway)

This school is really great and supportive. It has changed my life since middle school. I was introverted scared of everything but this community at this school gave me so much support and helped me grow both as an artist and as a person. It helped me discover myself. It understood my problems and the non- judgmental type environment made it feel like home.

If you are a good student, someone who earnestly tries to get A's, wants to take honors classes, and do your best, you will get killed at this school with an incredible amount of homework. Stress levels for good students are through the roof. New administration is inundating kids with homework. Most of the students don't care and don't do homework, but the best students--who don't need this amount of homework--are being ground down. Not just honors/AP programs either. Regular classes have a ton of homework too--and AP classes are guaranteed a double load of homework (they brag about this.) Arts programs are good, but the academics kill the time for art, sleep...or anything else in life. Lots of homework over breaks and weekends. The teaching is good, but again, it's been too difficult to appreciate the positives when the homework load is killing. Principal doesn't care that the best students are suffering. Would probably be a better school if the quality of students was better, but too many underachievers (cutting school seems to be a big problem). Sadly, the school could be really good if they would just realize that more homework is not the cure for everything.

School of art and design is the best school I have ever gone to.My whole life includes moving and changing schools from Ny to Florida, to Pennsylvania, and back to Ny. I came there as a 9th grader and now an experienced sophomore. I 'donno what some people say about this school, but it's an artists dream to be taut there.

My son attended and graduated from this school with a 92.7 GPA. He is now getting a degree in business even though he worked in Architecture for the 4 years that he attend Art & Design. The teachers worked well with me and the vice principal and all of the dean's were very very helpful and they were very amiable to parents...well, to me! (smile) Does my son still utilize his creative side with his drawing? Of course he does.

ABSOLUTELY THE WORST SCHOOL I HAVE EVER ATTENDED As an 11th grader attending this school here are my pros and cons Pros -Art programs Cons -Many students who smoke pot -The Guidance counselors are a joke. -Filthy school -Graffiti is all over school propety -Out of date text books -Many not all, teachers don't care enough to push all students to keep trying. -Not enough home work. I was once a student who loved art, it was something I looked forward to doing at school when ever I had the chance but this school has sucked all the love I once had for it out. It is sad seeing how immature, rude and unprofessional some of the guidance counselors and teachers in this school can be.

I love Art and Design High School because of their dedication and hard work with our children. They are very encouraging and take the time with the students in showing them how to bring out their artistic gifts. The High School of Art and Design is dedicated and committed to equip all students with what is necessary to be out in the world. The teacher truly care about the children & they education. They are also very helpful to the parents when we need help or any information to help our children. I love how they have different programs for our children and this school provides a safe environment for our children. I love Art & Design High School because the school allows my daughter to come out of her shell and express herself. In her former schools, she had to wear uniforms and had to look a certain way. She was always quiet and slightly depressed. Now she can express her art through her dressing/styling, as well as on canvas/paper. She is more outgoing now and she laughs a lot! To see my daughter smile just melts my heart. So I thank God for giving my daughter the gift of art, and I thank Art & Design for giving her the opportunity to express that gift.

I went to Art Design, and it is where I felt like I was no longer a outsider. I was always the dreamer, the child that drew in the margin of my notebook. Once I came A&D I was a selected few from all five borough was hand picked to be part of that specialized school. A School of my fellow piers. We had illustration, film, architecture, film and photography students. We would talk about each others work and help one another no matter what the field you were in. It is the only Public School in the city that felt like a community. That was the beginning for me and my love for all art. I am now a photographer and have had shows in galleries and the MOMA.

Art and Design High School ('A&D') is a rare and wonderful institution that offers significant training and support to young artists who may otherwise never be able to reach their artistic and professional potential, and the proof is in the many now famous graduates who went on to contribute significantly in their areas of artistic focus. For example, Betsy Johnson in Fashion design, Keith Herring in pop art. A&D is unique in its ability to offer excellent academics as well as commercial and fine art training and development. As state and federal funding is slashed, I am very hopeful that A&D will survive the cuts and this award would help ensure that it will!

The High School of Art & Design has turned out an amazing array of talent. Not just artists, but newscasters, TV and movie stars, doctors, lawyers, designers and more. You will not find a more close nit group of young people, joined together by their love of the arts all races, creeds and genders. The school has more spirit in one classroom than you'd find in an entire building of any other school. And, it's a public school, with students from all walks of life, rich, poor, from all neighborhoods of the 5 boroughs of New York City. There is no class struggle in the school, no bias towards alternate lifestyles and no jealousy or 'gang' mentality. Just artists, living and working together everyday to make life better for themselves and those around them. It is truly a magical place in the heart of NYC.

At the age of 5 my son had a passion for the art, it was good knowing that there was a public in New York that catered for children with this passion. He started attending Art and Design HS in September 2009. He is excited about his school and look forward every morning waking up and leaving the house to attend school. He also speaks highly of all his teachers, the staff , and even the security. I had an opportunity to meet the principal at the first PTA meeting. He spoke about the vision he has for the children and the school. They were all exceptional visions, but coming from the private school system one of my favorite is his vision to let this school be parent friendly..........., I have seen this worked in the private school community and I know that it can work in the public school community.

This is where all the kids go who are extremely talented, but may not have very high grades academically and are rejected by other schools. The teachers here are wonderful and care so much aobut thier students. The talent at this school should not be overlooked or overshadowed by such schools as La Guardia etc.. Art and Design is a school to be proud of, along with its dedicated staff and wonderful students!

Art and Design High School is one of the best Art School in NYC. It is diverse, creative and help the students to pursue their dreams to a future career. Their staff of teachers, parent coordinator, counselor, Principal are exceptional and involved with the students and parents. My son is a Senior and love it. He's going to gratuate with a major in Illustration and Graphic Design and hopefully that's going to be his future career...It was the best choice for him!

The school , I have to say, produces many talented artist but the administration is lacking. I'm currently a sophomore now and things haven't really changed at all, there are still instructors who don't care about teaching and just talk about random subjects in class. There is unfair treatment to certain students and many are singled out due to there past. We were supposed to get a new building , but we ran out of money and now we don't have a auditorium, gym, and half of a cafeteria. The only positive is the art and that we have a new principal.

Some great teachers and hardworking students. The administration changed the curriculum frequently without any warning. Threw my kid for a loop a number of times. Took me 4 years to meet the principal. His office has a closed door policy. Implemented AP Classes instead of putting more effort into bringing up the academic level school wide. After creating the academic gap they didn't even bother to prepare students for the AP exams. Students cut classes and hang out in the hallway sometimes disrupting the classes. They have so much talent between the teachers and students. With a decent administration this could be an exceptional school.

The school is designed for future artists. My daughter is in Sophomore year, the school acomodates the kids in classes that are apropiate for their ability. Teachers would go out of their way to contact you with concerns.

This school is great for the art inspired young adults of our community. I am an alumni and I must say that I recieved my tools to be successful during the time I attended the High School of Art and Design.

My child just started his first year of high shcool at Art and Design, and I have had one teacher parent meeting so far. I feel that there are too many students for the teachers to teach properly. The history teacher and math teachers were exceptional I thought.

It is a safe school with a strong academic program with college preparatory and AP classes. It has an extraordinary four year program in design with double period classes every day for 4 years with five majors to choose from. There's a strong afterschool program with sports and clubs, an SVA program and museum partnerships and internships...an amazing school!

This school changed my son's life. He became an artist and learned amazing things about himself. The teachers were interesting, most of the time, and the college office got him into a great college. This school is a hidden gem in Manhattan.

Don't wate your time, this school really isn't as excellent as it was 5 years ago. FOr 3 years that i have attented there was no permenant principal and the school didn't provide anything for students in terms of aceidemics or guidiance. Most teachers don't really teach anything and make students feel as though there school is a waste of time. When approcahing guidnace counslers on this manner you are mostly lectured instead of recieveing any help.

The bottom line I only have fond memories from a few of my teachers and friends. The school diversity is the only good thing. The school needs to fix its academics, art courses, majority of the teachers need to be reviewed and the classroom equipments.

The principal is worried more about how to give a good image of the school than making the school any better. We need a new building! But other than that its a fun school with a viarity of people. I like it.

I am a graduate of this incredible Public High School. Students commute from the 5 boroughs of N.Y.C. Admission is competitive, based on the prospective student's art talents and teacher recomendations. The teachers are practicing artists in their feild. As such, the quality of instruction surpasses many college art curricula. The atmosphere is incredibly supportive, professional, and encouraging. Once admitted, each student is encouraged to 'compete' with him or herself - not with fellow classmates. The school 'campus' is one of the world's great cities. During lunch and after school, I watched movies and TV shows being produced, visited museums and art galleries, viewed photography shoots for national magazines, etc. Guest speakers at our student assemblies were internationaly famous architects. It is one of the best and most unique H.S.'s in the world. More than any other influence, it molded me into the person I am today. It is an honor to be admitted.

Initially upon attending the open house we were convinced that this was the school my daughter would love to be a part of; however once she was accepted and started attending she was greatly disappointed. The first problem she had was that there was no air conditioning in the school the classrooms are very hot and uncomfortable. One student even passed out in the heat. She hated the fact that her schedule is the same everyday. The lunchroom is so crowded that vast numbers of students are often left standing because there are not enough seats. There are alot of out of control students and that was also surprising. Shortly after she started attending the students began to write graffiti all over the walls on one floor.

Overall, my daughter was able to get both a solid academic and artistic education here. Bureaucracy is everywhere in the public achool system, and this is no exception, but it is no worse than any other public achool in that regard. Bottom line: if your child is a serious art student and also wants a solid academic education, it can be found here. The teachers will be there for them, and opportunities for friendship with other budding artists also are available.

In reading the previous parent review, I feel I must respond. I am a graduate of A&D and feel that this school has paved the way for many young artist to enter the world of visual art. The school is there for those who are serious about their art education. I regret that the previous reviewer felt her child's needs weren't being met. That is not the school that I remember. If you were serious about your art, they were there to encourage you. I found my education there to be invaluable and ireplaceable.

As the parent of a student who attended Art & Design for 2 years, i was very disappointed with the staff, especially the guidence counselors who are supposed to be there for your child when they ask for help. I spent more time going to that school for nonsense, and the answer to all our questions was always 'I don't know'. I finally had to transfer my son to another school where his grades have soared because of the help and concerns of the teachers and staff.

Their policy about how students cannot return after they get discharged is not fair because some students including me really wanted to get back in the school!
