Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

My daughter and I absolutely love this school! she transferred to this school in the 2nd grade from a private school (Guardian Angel; HORRIBLE). I was worried about switching school but from the moment she got there she loved it made friends easily, she was behind in reading because the private didn't focus on reading so when she got there she was at level "E" by January she was at a level "J" and by the end of the year she was at "N". After school here is great (Adi hip hop teacher is awesome) ALOT of parent involvement, no bullying I can go on and on about this school! Thank you Ms.Rhee and Mrs.Rosevear they are great teachers. We look forward to the next two yrs at Ps11

This is a wonderful school! I came across it just by chance and had to go through great length to get my daughter into this zone - but the move was well worth it! The principal and his staff create such a warm and open atmosphere - acknowledging the strength not just of students but also of teachers and parents. Here are just a few of the many special opportunities: Kind & Gentle philosophy; 3rd graders get to write 5 minute plays which are performed by actors at a Broadway theater; 4th graders have a collaboration with Julliard - attending monthly concerts; the indoor swimming pool is part of phys ed; there are many workshops for children & their families focusing on poetry, math, architecture, and many other topics; the after school program offers a wide variety of programs, including hip-hop instructions that end in an incredible show; frequent workshops for parents to learn how to help children grow, ... and chickens in the school yard to learn about caring for animals and science. Of course nothing is ever perfect, but my daughter has been in a nightmarish school before coming to PS11 - the difference is like night and day!

I have a child in 2nd grade in the G&T program and a child in kindergarten in general ed. I couldn't be happier with this school. I feel both of my children are getting a well rounded education. The principal is a true leader who attracts outstanding teachers. I feel very lucky to have my children here. The only criticism is that the systems within the school office feel a bit antiquated and could use some upgrading to the digital age. They have made some strides this yr in this area but still have a ways to go.

I can't say enough great things about this school and it's staff. My son has been attending this school since Kindergarten. He is now in the 3rd Grade. His teachers have always been attentive, informative and extremely kind and patient. Mr. Bender is the best! I remember this school when I was a child (I never attended) and it wasn't the best learning environment. Mr. Bender changed all that dramatically! There are no lingering traces of what it used to be. This school has a pretty good emphasis on the creative arts, which I adore. Just yesterday my kids class were able to see plays they wrote re-enacted by actual actors in a theater on Broadway! My son and I are lucky to be a part of this school.

P.S.11 William T. Harris is a vibrant, culturally enriched school. My daughter is attending kindergarten G&T and it's very challenging for her. Her teacher is concerned about her progress and responds quickly to our emails and any concerns we have. The arts there are incredible and really sophisticated. The parents are fabulous. The toughest part is the long school bus commute from the upper east side which really takes a toll on my daughter. She's often too tired to do her homework (of which there is too much). Fortunately her teacher is understanding and has helped us figure out ways to adapt. I'm also glad to see there are a lot of kids coming from our neighborhood to P.S. 11 so we have plenty of friends in the neighborhood. Her teachers are on top of my daughter's progress, but I still wish she received more attention. All the families in the class are so fabulous, bright, interesting, and unpretentious. I love the fact that there is space and light at the school, much more than the other G&T programs we considered (NEST, Anderson, Lower Lab). Just wish there was more science for kindergarteners and there's no foreign language program.

The school is great! Like anything in life it is what you make of it that counts. My daughter enjoys going to PS11. The teaching staff is good. They use Columbia University Teachers College methods in reading, in which my daughter has responded very well to. She is learning time management and is transitioning better to changes that occur during the day. My daughter is learning to be a good person here.

Spitting, teasing, pushing, acting out. That's what my kid learned in PS 11's kindergarten CTT class. More than one parent openly talks about "a wasted year" for their child. The teachers never gave feedback on homework and the parent-teacher conferences were perfunctory. My kid's lunch box got thrashed and dragged around one day at recess. When I asked the assistant teachers about it, the response was, "We don't know what happened. We were watching the kids." Really? On the surface, everything is wonderful at this school.

Our daughter is just about finished with her first year @ PS11. We could not be happier with her teachers, the principal, staff, and most importantly, how much our daughter loves the school. The parents tend to be active, involved, and cool. Our daughter really developed her reading skills this year beyond our wildest dreams. Seeing her beaming smile each day after school has been quite a trip for us. Our only gripe is how inflexible the bus system is for kids who are from out of the zone, and how long and inefficient some of the bus routes are -- but that is not the school's fault. Overall, this is truly an excellent school. We stressed out a bit, like most parents, before choosing a K class for our daughter, but we could not be happier with this choice in retrospect.

To the parent who stated that the curriculum is the same for Gen Ed and G&T. You are incorrect. My 2nd grader iin G&T s coming home with the exact same worksheets that my 3rd grader in Gen Ed has. In G&T they learn multiplication, division and fractions exactly one year earlier than those in Gen Ed. I find that the Gen Ed teachers to do not push the students to learn at a higher level if they are capable. Instead, they all learn at the same pace. In the first half of theyear my Gen Ed student came home with only 1 math sheet of homework a night, my G&T student came home with at least an hour of homework a night. No, they do not go deeper into a subject - that's what ty say they do.

I would like to respond to the poster below who was concerned about the difference between Gen Ed and G&T; AT PS 11, as in all G&T programs within Gen Ed schools across the city, the curriculum is exactly the same across each grade level. Teachers plan their units together--G&T does not plan separate units. The only difference is that G&T may go deeper into the material, according to the kids' ability. As a PS 11 parent, I have been delighted by the quality of the education the kids are getting, and absolutely wowed by the amount of enrichment the principal has incorporated in the program--in every type of classroom, and at every grade level. I couldn't ask for a better school!

We could not be happier with PS11. We moved into the neighborhood years ago, long before we had kids, and cannot believe how fortunate we are that this is our zoned school. Bob Bender is the most amazing principal - the best i have seen. His authentic enthusiasm and love for the students is infectious - the kids respect him deeply and adore him wholeheartedly. The teachers are great, and we have been close with each of our son's teachers. Communication is open, parents feel welcome and are very involved, kids are happy and challenged. Joy and rigor are in beautiful balance. The school is a gem.

My children attend PS 11. I do love the school, however, there is a big divide between what the children in Gen Ed learn and those in G&T. I believe there is a wider gap in learning ability / speed in the Gen Ed classes than you have in G&T. Unfortunately, for those in Gen Ed who are brighter - but did not do as well on the G&T testing - they are languishing with a slower course of study. I would like the school to teach all children to the learning levels their ability allows. Also, a pet peeve - why don't children learn the Pledge of Allegiance or the Star Spangled Banner? The U.S. tax payer is funding these schools. I've had to teach my children at home - the fundamentals of being an American. Separation of church and state does not mean separation of state and state.

It is a fun place to learn! The curriculum is diverse with a balance of academic, cultural and physical activities. The kids get along with K&G (Kind & Gentle) as their anthem. The teachers are great. There is a strong support system for children with special needs ie. TAG, CTT classes, counseling, effective IEPs for learning disabilities. Parent involvement is fantastic. The SLT & PTA organize fun ways for families to stay involved in their childrens' academic development. There is a great camraderie there among the teachers and with the administrators. It's by no means perfect, but it works!

PS11 is a true NYC Community School. I couldn't have dreamed of a better environment for my daughter to be brought up in scholastically. I had no such diversity in my school when I grew up, and I feel this is invaluable for her world view. The reason it works is because of Bob Bender and his intense focus on what matters in the school. The test scores have been brought up incredibly fast since he's been at the school, as has the feeling of community and family. I can't say enough about how lucky I feel to be in this zone, at this school, with these fantastic educators and great neighborhood kids.

I am attracted to the PS 11 William T Harris School because of its diversed community. The faculty is amazingly wonderful from the ground staff to the administration. One always feels welcome and there exists a warmth, caring and loving atmosphere. The programs offered are great and my kids were very fortunate to be exposed to such great learning opportunities. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for many of our public schools. Belonging to PS 11 is like belonging to a community, and that is how they come together faculty and parents for the well being of our children.

Mr. Bender our Principal has brought our school out of the ash-heap of mediocrity and chaos to create a vibrant, caring community of students, teachers and parents that has become the envy and example of other community public schools. PS 11 is a nurturing and tolerant environment, one where the arts are valued as much as the core classes of math, reading and science, and indeed are synthesized into these curricula so that there is a whole-brain emphasis instead of the focus of 'teaching to the test' mentality so rampant these days in other programs. Our son has enormous pride in his school, and he is in a place where he knows and is known by the entirety of the school population. It is a garden our children are flourishing.

P.S.11 is the main elementary school for one of the best neighborhoods in Manhattan, Chelsea. One of the greatest things about Chelsea is the real neighborhood feel where many of the residents are familiar and friendly with each other. Something hard to come by in the middle of New York City. Also the school reflects the diversity of it's residents. There is a liberal and eclectic feel that fits in with the spirit of the neighborhood. I love P.S.11.

Teachers there, they all work hard but you can feel the difference in treatment from the Principal for those parents who donate more to the school from the stuck up parents. The school is located in a nice neighboorhood, offers a way lot more of extra activities for an elementry school, too liberal in their teachings, kids are disciplined accordingly. The students are getting better in all aspects of study.

My daughter got the greatest education at PS 11 that we could ever have imagined. The teachers were the most amazing, creative, talented, innovative, musical, and inspiring people my daughter could have hoped to be mentored by. She is now a junior at Oberlin College and spending her first semester in Prague and and second semester in Africa. Yet she still goes back to visit her dear teachers at PS 11 every time she is back at home in NYC. She swears by her education there and we do too. Especially her music teacher, Sharon Golub and her classroom teachers Dinah Krosnick, Elizabeth Sweeney and Katherine Bomer, all models of what teachers ARE and should be.

Both of my neices are flourishing there. Their skills are waaaaay above grade level. They are happy. Their parents are happy. Unlike other schools damaged by NCLB that push kids through without skills PS 11 has found the knack of guiding children through school, and when they move one they move on WITH NECESSARY ACADEMIC SKILLS. The faculty of the school feel a joy in their teaching that transmits to the children; they are encouraged to be part of something communal t i.e. the garden they've been involved in planning, the jobs they're given that foster responsibility and pride, while their individuality is nurtured and given appropriate guidance without trying to fit everyone into one mold. The spirit that makes you feel you're part of a 'school family' is a beautiful environment to spend your days in.

PS 11 is a school that is not only focused on the education of its kids but on their entire journey from being little people with dreams to big people who make an impact on their community. PS11 reaches out to its community and provides its students with real life examples of how working hard and caring about each other can really make a difference. With PS11's music, theater, art, computer, science, swimming and indiviualized enrichment programs, the children have the opportunities to explore what they are passionate about. PS 11 is a true example of what the American public school experience should and can be. Its success is a testament to the true public/private partnership between the adminstration, parents and community. The principal, staff and teachers are passionate, efficient and open. The parents are engaged in school as well as after school activities. The after school program is run by dedicated and selfless former parents who engage local artists and experts - as well as the community in innovative programs such as a student run farmer's market and urban gardening. We adore this school. Our daughter has had such a wonderful experience at PS11 -- just loves going to school. Her teachers so far (she's on her third now) have been wonderful, kind and interesting individuals who really know how to teach our daughter. The specials teachers are all terrific too. The principal is amazing, motivated and so great at his job. The facility is fantastic -- a classic turn of the century School Building, full of light and historical interest. The afterschool program is a huge success for our daughter. She meets so many kids who are in other grades and classes -- makes the entire school feel like one big happy family. We love it, and wouldn't want her anywhere else. Looking forward to sending our son in a few years. Thank you PS11.

Dedicated and caring teachers and ancillary staff, a tireless principal who knows every child by name, active parent body, great arts curriculum, and wonderful afterschool all contribute to making PS11 a great school. The 'Kind and Gentle' curriculum teaches kids compassion and good citizenship. The physical environment is conducive to learning and fun. My daughter is learning so much and enjoying her time at school once again this year.

At first we were sceptical entering the g&t program at ps11 last year. we are zoned for a well-regarded school however we decided to give ps11 a try. We were blown away by almost everything at ps11. The kids are extremely sweet, smart and well behaved. The teachers focus on the needs of every particular child. The atmosphere is both structured and easy at the same time. We were impressed how much our child has learned in Kindergarten and how much she enjoyed it. Thank you, PS11!

The foundation of support at p.s.11 starts from the base of interactive and involved parents to its understanding and approachable staff at both instructor and administrative levels. The TAG program has provided small class sizes and individualized learning goals so that the kids are advancing at their own pace. The enrichment and afterschool programs are reflective of the same diverse culture that makes NYC one of the best places in the world to raise a child!

It is the best public elementary school in NYC. I have toured them all and ps 11 is by far the most thoughtful and intellectually curious. The curriculum is very carefully prepared and my child learns so much each and every day. There is a rich arts and computer program. The discipline at the school is based on being kind and gentle, and is not at all shame based. This promotes a very high sense of self esteem for the children. All of the teachers are smart, energetic and caring. The Principal and Vice Principal are completely hands on and involved every minute of every day.

P.S.11 WTH School is amazing for many reasons. Some of them are that Principal Bender is very caring, involved in every aspect, is approachable, communicates with the parents regularly, knows all the students, and is at every function. The teachers are great and they provide their emails so parents have a way for staying in touch. There's a strong PTA and lots of parent volunteer with a solid fundraising team. The school also has amazing social events for the children and the community. It has an unusually welcoming atmosphere.

Dynamic and inclusive, PS 11 is one fantastic elementary school. Not only does it give great academic lessons to the students but has an awesome and active PTA who give back to the students and teachers but it also is just great for the community, bringing together all kinds of kids and parents. A real picture of NYC in the halls each day and tons of smiling kids.

PS 11 is utterly dedicated to helping each and every kid realize their potential. The public school manages to personalize and individualize education for its large student body, the principal knows every child's name and who's in their family, the curriculum is thoughtful and not only about testing, families are invited in for regular events so we know what's going on with our kids, and we have a strong sense of community as a school and as a neighborhood, so our children are learning how to be citizens who contribute constructively to our city and our world. We have two kids in attendance now and every day are happy to leave them in such good hands.

PS11 is an exceptional school. The principal, teachers, and the rest of the staff are wonderful. Plus the school has unique features, like swimming classes for all kids starting in 2nd grade, a great music program that teachs the piano, and an extensive afterschool program. The kids are all nice and the families are very friendly. There is great diversity, since the school includes classes in each grade for general education, gifted & talented, CTT and special ed.

We are new to New York and new to the US school system. PS 11 has been perfect so far - very friendly people, the principal is always out there in the mornings, teachers and very warm, class rooms are clean and very well equipped and our son loves the school already. We have not been there long enough to comment on how much our son is learning but so far the experience has been excellent.

I love P.S. 11, I've worked in many schools and this one is the best. I've worked at P.S. 3 and P.S. 41, and P.S. 11 seems to get through the most by means of discipline and work. The kids and teachers are happy, and the principal Robert Bender does a great job. If I have children, I'd want them to go here.

The change in this school over the last two years has been remarkable under the new principal. The school recently received a PERFECT rating on the latest DOE inspection -- the only elementary school in Region 9 that did so. Not 41. Not 234. Not 116. P.S. 11!

This school is really on the move up. We have a wonderfully committed principle and caring teachers. We have 3 children attending and could not be happier with the education they are receiving. There is a small group of committed parents and the school works very hard to involve parents in the school and they really do listen. The school has a gifted and talented program that is great. It has a dedicated music teacher (with a room full of electric keyboards), computer teacher (new computers), drama teacher, art teacher and has a swimming pool as well. The students come from many different back grounds which only enriches the education environment.
