Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

As a parent of a G&T student at PS33, I have nothing but praise for the school. As stated in many of the reviews, the teachers are the stars of the school. Criticism of the principal is unjustified; she has kept this small, underappreciated school afloat, greets/addresses students by name (she knows many of the parents too). From what I understand the PTA was an unorganized, mess. Under the current leadership, new initiatives, fundraisers and activities have blossomed. There is fiscal responsibility has replaced apathy and neglect. The one negative is the funding for the school, which I understand, was slashed due to the G&T enrollment which threw off the numbers (I'm hazy on the details). The music program was cut. However, the parents and administration stepped up and were able to replace the music program. Many parents may be put off by the location of the school, but I embrace the diversity and the ever-changing landscape of NYC has now placed the school on the Highline and in the midst of the Chelsea art galleries. PS33 is a quiet, hidden gem. The G&T program is relatively new and the test scores/track record belie the greatness of the families and teachers at PS33.

Excellent experience for my son who is now going into the 2nd grade for G&T. The curriculum is top-notch and demanding but this is a G*T class after all. There are a few whiner parents who complain about the homework loads so if you want an avg education for your child don't go to this school. Homework daily is the norm so please be ready to commit as a parent. Overall, the community is great and the school is safe and secure. Some parents don't like the principal because she'll tell the parents what they "need" to hear not what they "want" to hear. We've been so pleased with this program and our friends who have kids at Nest and Anderson have said PS 33 is above what they do at those schools. The pace is fast in G&T and parents should be ready to commit to time and energy to help their child on a daily basis. The food in the cafeteria isn't the best so our son brings his own lunch every day.

PS33 is a great school with some of the best teachers in NYC and a very strong principal. It's too bad that some parents have to report erroneous information about the school when they can't get their way about something....it just damages their own child's education. The school has been an "A" school specifically because of the principal's leadership - she is the one that took the helm of a failing school 10 years ago and made it one of the most sought after schools in the city. PS33 remains the one of the most diverse schools in the city and all students, whether in general education or G&T, receive a first rate education.

As a P.S. 33 parent and former PTA member, I've witnessed the decline of this school under the directorship of the current principal. The school has a lot of programs, but often are geared towards the families that have a lot of extra money to spare. When families can't pay, they can't participate. In the neighborhood, the school has a reputation for marginalizing students who are not "gifted and talented". Those students get the better programs and resources. The special education at this school is terrible. I'm pretty sure they are breaking some laws because there are NO 12:1 classrooms. I've heard similar things from other parents. The discipline is also the worst. Kids are rough housing and cursing at each other. The only factors keeping me in the community are the stellar teachers and my daughter's social circle. The teachers are the ones that keep that place together. My daughter has been at this school for the past 5 years and have had an excellent teacher most years. I've become good friends with a few of them and have told me they don't support the unethical decisions the principal makes, but fear for their jobs if they speak up.

The Principal, admin staff and teachers at PS33 are exceptional. They have shown so much care for the children throughout the school year. My daughter has learned a lot while strengthening her love for learning. I cannot ask for more. She already cannot wait to be back in school.

Chelsea Prep's Gifted and Talented program is amazing. My children's kindergarten experience was outstanding. Their teacher was so enthusiastic, thoughtful and creative. She was in constant communication with parents and is a devoted teacher who clearly loves teaching and her students. The school is racially diverse and has a strong sense of community. Parent involvement at school is strongly encouraged. The PTA is committed to maintaining high standards for the school. And the principal provides strong leadership, is very hands on and practically minded. She is also accessible to parents and very present at the school. I feel very lucky my children got into this school.

Amazing kindergarten experience for our 6 yr old daughter at PS 33. She was in G&T K117 and had an incredibly motivated and committed teacher. Lots of field trips, engaging course units - our daughter not only advanced by leaps and bounds in reading, but developed a passion for writing as well, creating books of her own at home just for fun. Homework load was more than we would have liked, but at least with this teacher it was due on a weekly basis, allowing for more flexibility and keeping it from crushing our daughter's natural interest and excitement about learning. While the school as a whole is subject to many of the administrative difficulties common to NYC public schools, and we're not entirely happy with the segregation of G&T and regular track classes, there is a very committed PTA and a good feeling of community among many of the parents - this is a school that is improving every year, and is definitely aiming high.

PS 33 Chelsea Prep is home to some of the best teachers I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and working with. Each teacher gets to know the strengths and weaknesses of every student and then works to create an environment that seems custom tailored to specifically meet those needs. The teachers reach out to parents with useful feedback regarding their child's academic performance. They also reach out to parents when there are concerns regarding social development as well (whether it be a concern about bullying or basic growing pains). I love that the teachers form bonds with the kids making the child want to show his/her accomplishments to all of his/her previous (and very interested) teachers. The school also brings in fantastic enrichment programs in the arts. I do feel that the children and teachers are unnecessarily stressed out about the ELA and math tests; I have seen children crying before and after these tests and know that many of the children are so fearful of these exams that they become physically ill over it. I genuinely believe that the children would do even better if they were not led to believe that these tests are the be-all and end-all.

PS 33 (CHELSEA PREP) is an amazing learning environment. Our daughter is going into 4th grade and has attended the school for 3 years. The principal and the teachers really care about the academic, social and personal development of the students. They allow for a dynamic learning environment, where there is not only a focus on developing core math and reading skills, but utilization of the arts, field trips, nature and community as teaching/learning experiences. The parents are incredibly active and support the school. Every time I attend the school for an event, I am absolutely impressed with the achievements of the students and the ongoing support of the faculty, parents and community. The G&T program is amazing and our daughter has flourished as a result. I cannot say enough great things about PS 33. The reviews speak for themselves.

Our daughter attends the G&T program at the school and we love it. The teachers are incredible -- kindergarten teacher Ms. Akin sets the standard on what "teacher" should mean. I am constantly shocked by the amount our daughter has learned.

We are thrilled with our son's experience at PS 33. His teacher's have been extraordinary. There is so much offered to the children--we feel very lucky that he is there. It's a smaller school--so we don't feel lost in a big school environment. The quality of the work the kids do is amazing. The kids are challenged, but learning still remains fun and exciting.

Chelsea Prep is a thriving community. Under the leadership of Principal Lindy, with incredible support from the staff and the PTA, this school continues to gain momentum. It is a diverse community, with families from all walks of life. What we have been most impressed with (we have two children enrolled) is the scope of education provided. Principal Lindy encourages the teachers to reach beyond the school walls for learning opportunities, and provides them with the support and freedom to do so. We are thrilled to be a part of this exciting time at Chelsea Prep.

I am very impressed with PS 33. My child attends a G&T class, and we chose to enroll at PS 33 rather than our zoned downtown school. It was a great decision for us. The families are wonderful. The kindergarten teachers are excellent. And many many field trips are included in the curriculum, which provides a much more experiential component to learning-- which is a great fit for my child.

My school - Chelsea Prep PS 33 is an amazing place for children to learn. Our principal Mrs. Lindy has done so much to create a great collaborative alliances with The Audubon Society, The Whitney Museum, Google and others. She attracts amazing teachers who are very committed to the students. The physical plant of the school may not be the fanciest but the school has a lot of heart. The parent body and PTA are doing more and more to make the school the best it can be. We are very please to be a part of the PS 33 community

PS33 was such a surprise when our kid was accepted at Chelsea Prep. We dud not know anything about the school and the district. We are now so happy about the school, the principal; and the teachers that we would not even consider another school in the area. Our son is thrilled about the program at G6T, the friends he made from different parts of the city and the teachers he cherished throughout the years: A lot of parents should know about this school.

This school has exceeded my expectations for what we wanted for our son. I was a little nervous going from private pre-K to the K G&T program since it wasn't a local school. Let's face it, the neighborhood isn't the most desirable but this school is the gem of the neighborhood! I can tell you even the gen ed program seems as strong as the G&T program that my son experiences. The school is orderly and very safe and I'm amazed at all the great things our son learns on daily basis. The things he's learning in Kindergarten blow my mind - stuff I didn't learn until first or even 2nd grade. The projects are real life experiential learning and the teachers for both gen ed and G&T all seem to get along very well. Even though the G&T classes are separate they still are part of the school which is nice. The parents all care and all want the best for the kids. I feel there's a real community here and it's nice to see parents actively involved in their kids education. The principal doesn't put up with any disorderly conduct and I wish parents would stop trying to second guess her decisions. She knows what's she's doing so let her do her job. She does it so well and all the kids benefit.

A gem in our public school system for NYC! Our son started last year in the G&T program at PS 33 and it was an incredible experience with Miss Dana who is SO enthusiastic and passionate about teaching. My son absolutely adores her and the field trips were exceptional for Kindergarten. The school community is wonderful and is a true microcosm of New York City with a true representation of ALL the many cultures and socio-economic demographics that New York city has to offere. The principal, well let's say she runs a "tight shIp" and doesn't put up with any riff-raff. Some parents weren't fans but I admire her persistance and goal of keeping this an exceptional school for the G&T and gen ed program. This year has started out with a great bang as well and my son can't wait to go to school every morning! The G&T curriculum is beyond anything I've seen elsewhere at other G&T programs I have friends attending in NYC - even citywide programs at NEST and the Anderson School. Things are orderly at the school and the only draw back is this school doesn't go through 8th or even 12 grade. The G&T parents support each other and really get along. I can't say enough great things about PS 33.

The best kept G&T secret in NYC is OUT and it's called PS 33! Our daughter attends this school and we absolutely LOVE it. The curriculum is challenging but also real-world experience. All the teachers seem to get along with each other and are very supportive of one another. I know some parents aren't fans of the principal but in my opinion she has a specific vision for this school which some may not agree with. The principal knows how to work the system to the advantage of all the students in the school - gen ed and G&T courses. Parents just need to let the principal and her admin staff do their jobs of making sure our kids get the best education possible. I can tell you this is a GREAT G&T program and based upon my research is on par (if not better) than NEST and Anderson. And the one post on here where someone claims the principal screamed and yelled at her? Yeah, RIGHT...give me a break. Mrs. Lindy is one of the most soft spoken people I've met so this is outrageous someone would say that she was screaming at her. Get a grip.

I have a child in the pre-k group at ps 33. I am very happy to say that I am more than impressed by Lenore Lindy. I recently sent an e-mail to Principal Lindy and received a timely, thoughtful response and when I saw her a week or so later at drop off, she acknowledged the e-mail and updated me on the subject we were discussing. She knows the children by name, she visits the classrooms, chats with parents. Principal Lindy is not shut away behind closed doors. Our experience with the school, teachers and administration has been positive.

Unprofessional and irrational behavior from the current principal, Ms. Lindy. Ms. Linday screamed and yelled at me in front of group of kids in the cafeteria when I drop off my kid for school because I called Board of Education. I have never seem such a savage person. What amazed me is with her attitude like that, she can still become a principal to guide our kids. I'm sure I'm not the only parent here got verbally abused by her. It's time we need to look out for our kids. Ms. Lindy is definitely not looking out for the best interest of our kids.

This morning PS 33 hosted an amazing 1st annual Science Fair. My son and all the other 5th graders did an amazing job! Some of the types of scientific experiments they conducted included; Balloon Rockets, Testing H20 Simulated Volcanic Eruption and many more. I am pleasently proud of Principal Ms. Lindy, Asst. Principal Ms. Hermelin, and Science Teacher Ms. Lubick for continously implementing meaningful teaching and learning experiences. Best, Belinda (Jodeci's Mom :) )

My daughter started going to Chelsea Prep in 2010 as a Kindergartner. We live far away from the school and obviously were worried about the commute, but theschool bus service is amazing and within a week of starting we were comfortable. It is beyond our belief how much she picked up last year in the G & T class and is contnuing to do so as a first grader in every aspect reading, writing, math. We are truly amazed by the ability of the teachers to cater the needs of these advanced learners. Communication with the parents is excellent, you are only an email away from the teacher!!!

Amazing school with one of the best G&T programs in the city. I have a a daughter in first grade at PS 33 and we have been amazed at how much she has picked up from the top notch teachers at the school. The building is old but what they are doing there is new. They have used the best and latest ideas in education to create a G&T program that is rigorous and academically challenging from K. I have friends with kids in other programs in the city and they are not getting the same level of work that PS 33 has provided my daughter. I think the secret about this gem is getting out though because they doubled the program this year. So lucky that we found this school.

My son comes from a Montessori environment and started in the G&T program in the class taught by Ms. Dana. She is amazing at bringing out the best of your child. The school emphasis in reading and math is excellent. The parent participation in the classroom is welcomed and appreciated. We are in constant communication with the classroom teacher which allows us to have an integral education for our child that includes home and school. I have had an excellent experience with the staff. The school's parent coordinator Ms. Hanne is always available to help you and cordial with all parents. Children receive and practice sports which was very important for us. We would like a better music program though. In our previous school our child was learning to play the piano. Not happening here. We feel like at home. We live far from the school, but for us is totally worth it to have our child at PS33 G&T because we feel he is getting the stimulation and support he needs to succeed.

Chelsea Prep is a phenominal public school institution. My child recently switched into the G&T Kindergarten class taught by Ms. Dana from another G&T K class. Rude awakening...G&T classes are far from being created equal. Chelsea Prep is the deluxe stretch limo of public school G&T programs and the school is AT LEAST as good as the Citiwide programs. I literally sleep better and generally feel more relaxed since my daughter started attending Chelsea Prep.

I cannot tell you how happy I am with Chelsea Prep. I have a Daughter in Pre-K and another in Kindergarten. My positive experience with the school began before my children attended. I visited the school and was warmly greeted , given a tour of the school and made to feel as if I was a veteran parent. I am pleased with the quality of education at Chelsea Prep and the professionalize of every staff member. Ps. 33 has exceeded my expectations dramatically. The school is one big happy family. The PTA welcomes all to participate and give ideas. I have volunteered to help out in classroom activities, as well as attended school trips. Every time you turn there is information posted about upcoming events, Extracurricular Activities, ways for Parent Involvement, every perfect attendance is acknowledged; instilling responsibility in children. As a working parent I am well informed on what s going on in school and I do not feel left out. I am more than pleased with my choice of school, my girls love the school and I love the education, the morals, the values, the quality of teachers and the attention they are receiving.

My son and daughter both attend PS 33 and I am extremely happy with the education and awareness of what they are learning. The administration and PTA always keeps the Parents informed of new upcoming events, general information, etc. I feel up-to-date on everything even though I work full-time I still feel apart of the school. My children are zoned for PS 11 but I chose to keep my kids in PS 33 for the values, morals and education they are receiving.

Small class size, team approach to teaching and the dynamic and visionary leadership of Principal Linore Lindy have made Chelsea Prep (PS 33) one of Manhattan's best kept secrets. We transferred our now third grader at the beginning of the academic year from another area school. His academic performance improved right away by being in this tranquil yet academically challenging environment. Extended day and free afterschool activities round out the program. Parent involvement is encouraged, but still somewhat lacking. Chelsea Prep operates more like a private prep school than a public one.
