Fiorello H Laguardia HS is still a great school. Under the direction of Dr. Mars, we have once again earned an A rating on the NYC School Report Card. Our children have not suffered or missed a beat in their academic progression under the leadership of Dr. Mars. The great teachers and the wonderful support staff continue to make our children their priority. What's disappointing; is the lack of parents involvement/voluntarism; or attendance at PA Meetings. This has not changed, whether it was Kim Bruno or Dr. Mars sitting in the principals office.

Kim Bruno was an amazing visionary. F H LaGuardia was a great school when she was there. I am disgusted to see what the school has become under a visionless person like Mars. She is needs to go back to Queens.

The school days are long and suck the life out of me. I'm not sure how it was in the past, but now most people have schedules from 8:00 am to 4:10 pm. Three periods of art is tiring and has made me lose interest in the arts. Art majors get barely any attention and little to no care. The funding goes to drama majors. The academic classes are a joke. Some teachers are great but some are just terrible. Each class usually teaches directly from the textbook and never teaches anything that would deepen our understanding. I have a 98 average and have done basically no work all year. There are many kids that think that, just by wearing some generic clothes from Urban Outfitters, they are extremely artsy. So many kids smoke and do drugs it is ridiculous. There are some great kids, but there are also so many pretentious, rich, priviledged kids.

My school is LaGuardia. I really love the teachers here. They're so kind and understanding. I think that this school could improve by shortening school hours or getting escalators that go down.

It's a huge school but it's great! It has good academics (just watch out for some teachers) especially because it's still a Specialized High School. And obviously, it has great arts.

Overrated school, but still has it's charm here and there. I would encourage everyone to find out how long it takes to get to this school and back - you'll most likely have at least one year where you have a 10 period day, from 8:00 am to 4:10 pm. Getting home at 6:00 or even 5:30, while having an hour and a half of homework, is draining. I can only speak for art students, so for them I'll say you'll only get to the fun stuff your junior and senior year. As for the academics, they're pretty good. Like in every school, there's going to be a few teachers that just don't know what they're doing, but don't worry, you can always transfer out of those classes at the beginning of the year. As for making friends, there's no real "cliques" or anything like that, but...it still can definitely make you feel left out, if you don't know where to look. All in all, remember it's just a school - nothing to get too amped up about.

As a parent of a freshman - I was concerned about my daughter coming from a small JHS and going into this very massive HS. To my surprise, she adjusted well. She is still shy in making new friends; hopefully this will come with time. She is enjoying LAG immensely, and loves the idea of being able to do what she loves (sing) and be academically challenged at the same time. Looking forward to her sophomore year.

My daughter loves this school. She came from Poland and her dream was to attend LaGuardia High School. Now she is a freshman and really loves this school and everything associated with it. She met wonderful teachers who inspire her and encourage her to work :) She has a lot of great friends who support her and are willing to help. She now likes to learn, she has a purpose in her life and it makes me very happy. Although being both academic and artistic is very hard for students to maintain. However, as my daughter says: "This school is worth it" :)

My son is a senior in the Drama Studio at LaGuardia, and it's been a great experience for him, both in terms of the quality of the arts instruction and the academics, which have become much more rigorous during the tenure of the current principal, Ms. Bruno. Last night I attended an awards ceremony for my son's AP Environmental Science teacher, who won a coveted Sloan Foundation Award for excellence in teaching science. Tonight my son is at rehearsal for the annual musical which every year is near-Broadway quality, and presented in a theater that seats 1,100. Even if he successfully pursues an acting career, he may not get the chance to perform on such a stage again. And we really love the kids. They're great -- smart, funny, fun, creative, and very supportive of each other. The school communicates effectively with parents via a weekly newsletter which is chock full of info and written with a dash of humor (thanks, Dr. Stricklin!). And studios have monthly meetings for parents that back up to the more general PA meetings. We feel so lucky that our son had the opportunity to go to LaGuardia. He's gained so much from it over the course of his 4 years.

I have now been a LaGuardia parent for 7 years now and am still THRILLED with the way this school develops the whole student. This is due to an extremely caring staff! We were just devistated by the hurricane, yet the Guidance and tchrs have gone out of their way to give my daughter a place to belong and the help she needs as the rest of her life washed away. Although being both academic and artisitc is VERY difficult for students to maintain (don't think it will be easy), this develops the BEST kind of person. I wouldn't trade LaGuardia for any school in NYC!

Feel I must respond to the bitter assessment of LaGuardia posted below. There is no one school in the world that is perfect, and that fulfills every students every need. There will always be the good and the bad of everything. That said, I feel strongly that for my son, LaGuardia was a magnificent place to spend high school. He was challenged, and was asked to challenge himself. Self- responsibility Is required at this school, and though for some kids it might be slow in coming, it is continually emphasized by most teachers and the curriculum. It seems, that for students who are self-motivated, there is a huge menu to choose from. It is a school that has large focus and intense nurturing of the Arts ( hence the name), but based on the number of graduates who have gone on to highly competitive and exclusive colleges, and thrived, in areas that are not all Arts related, I would say the school is doing something right. I can't think of a school that would have been better for my son - and he seems to be thriving now in his Freshman year of college. Clearly, the balancing act required by the full full schedule at LaGuardia is not for everyone, but it was a gift for my son.

Both of my daughters attended LaGuardia; one is now in college and the other will graduate this year. They are very different people with different interests; yet both thrived at this school. The students at LaGuardia are bright , creative, passionate and very supportive of each other. The Principal and the teachers are very dedicated. In spite of continual budget cuts, they manage to provide the students with a fine education in the academic subjects as well as the arts. The parents are very involved, and work hard to help support the different programs. It is a wonderful community - one that I, and my family, are very proud to be a part of.

In response to the last review, the school DID NOT email parents anything about the survey. The Parents Association sent a letter that urged the parents to complete the survey. In addition the Parents Association informed all parents of the procedures to communicate with the school if they believed they had an issue that needed to be addressed. I was on the committee that wrote and distributed that letter. There are well-defined channels to deal with any issue, which include contacting a teacher, Assistant Principal, Guidance Counselor or even the Principal with your concerns. As a parent I am ecstatic that my child has the wonderful opportunity to be a part of the LaGuardia Arts High School community and has the excellent education in both academic subjects and the training in her chosen Music Studio. LaGuardia is not just a good school it is a GREAT school.

TERRIBLE SCHOOL!!! This school is not what you think it is. The academics in this school are horrific, and the school even sent me an email when the time of evaluating the school came, and told us to 'support the school' and if we had any complications, keep it to yourself or tell the main office personally. This was so the school can receive more funding. Math and English department lack severely, History being 7/10 and the best department. Teachers seem to have communication issues, or emotional problems, and can never connect with the child. My daughter recieved a 77 in Chemistry, but during PTC the teacher quickly rushed us in and out in less than a minute, saying that my daughter was top student in that class, as she barely passed other kids ( 60's ). I don't understand how you can allow your students to stay with such low grades and pass it off as you're just a harsh grader who teaches a mandatory curriculum. It's all BS.

My daughter graduated and my son is a currently a student. The kids are great and free spirited. The teachers are overburdened, and have very short class times (43 or so minutes to teach) for the most part with a few exceptions. There are a lot of AP's but they are very competitive to get into because of budget cuts. The day is crazy long - kids have lunch when it fits into their schedule (can be 10:30 or 2:30). Kids need to be hardy and very motivated to succeed here. Even if they are, they will be very tired by the end of it.

After graduating from a JK-8 Manhattan private school, my son was very happy at LaGuardia. Everything about the school - teachers, students, academics, culture, opportunities, environment - was way beyond expectations. For kids with smarts, integrity, talent, focus and drive -- this is an excellent choice. My son is now at a top conservatory. And as alum parents, we continue to attend the incredible performances at the school.

I actually missed the auditions for this school, and I really want to find a way to audition before my sophmore year. I do attend another perfoming arts highschool but it is waaaaayy tooooo focused on academics and I only get ONE period of my major - which is DRAMA and I feel like the school is not focusing enough on the art...Does anyone know if it's possible for me to audition? :/ Help please!

June 28, 2011
The reputation of this school in the performing arts is excellent and the audition process to get in is highly competitive. The facilities and faculty in the performing and graphic arts are tops. The honors programs at the school are also very academically excellent. My daughter has had excellent teachers who have always challenged her and demanded much of her academically. The principal, Kim Bruno, is a recognized leader in arts education as evidenced by recent articles in the Los Angeles Times about how that city is trying very hard to lure her away to be the principal of their new flagship arts school. There is a very active parents group which raised over $300,000 last year and an active alumni association with a full time executive director with a substantial endowment. The negative side is that as a large school there is not much personal attention outside of the classroom. Parent teacher conferences are very brief and difficult to coordinate on the two assigned dates each year. The college counselor is very good but is spread very thinly over a large graduating class. But we were able to complete the college admissions process with results we were pleased with.

Wow! Igraduated from M & A 35 years ago today when we were still located on the "hill". Some of the current students comments were very insightful, while other comments sadden me. Yes, we were all artist and artistic in our own ways and that is what created our community back then. Graduating during America's bicentinnel made it an exicting year as I was a vocal major and performed quite frequently that year. With regards to the academic curriculum, at that time it was top notch. Not only did I graduate from M & A, my sister did. In fact that is where she met her husband of 41 years, as he attended the school also. Even my brother-in-law's sister graduated from M & A as well. We all received fine training and an excellent education and became productive citizens.

I'm currently a freshman, and I can honestly say after this year that I'm not interested in LaGuardia anymore. As someone said before, art has become a chore. Although my artwork has improved greatly, it isn't as fun and too technical. My classes aren't necessarily hard, but the time management is. I go in at 8 and get out at 3:15 or 2:30 every day, and it's draining and I have no time to balance homework, studying and sleep. Many of my teachers teach directly from the textbook, teach terribly and don't know what they're talking about. I travel from the southernmost part of Brooklyn. I feel like most of the kids here are full of themselves because they're in an "art" school and act very artificial. This may be in any high school but here it's amplified due to the studios. If you're not at least somewhat "hipster", you just don't quite fit in. I'm so sick of waking up at 5am and getting home at 5pm every day. I wish I had never come. I give it 3 stars because many others succeed here - just not me.

LaGuardia offers excellent arts programs, but their academics are a joke. I graduated with below-Sophomore math classes, which has hurt my academic progress in college. Students do not get free periods; they take more art to fill those gaps, so if you attend LaGuardia, expect to be there from 8AM-3PM for four years. The teachers- paticularly art teachers- have experience in their field, and expect professional work. The students are a bit eccentric (they *are* artists, after all), and come from all backgrounds and areas of the city. Having 3-4 art classes a day became a chore. I didn't draw or paint anything for ten years after graduation. So, even though LaGuardia may have made me a better artist, it also made me despise art- the one thing I had always loved. It is located between a housing project and Martin Luther King High School. Just because Lincoln Center happens to be there doesn't make it a particularly safe neighborhood, particularly for transgendered and homosexual students. However, once they enter the LaGuardia building, they are accepted and safe. Overall, its a safe school (except for the mold in the air vents), and generally better than a zoned school would be.

This is my first year. I'm happy enough, but I often feel as thought the school is draining the life and creativity out of me. The day is extremely long. the teachers are good, as are the academic programs. the classes aren't very challenging but school has never ben challenging for me. I don't really agree with the message: there is no community in this school. If you have a true passion for your major i don't know if it's the school for you. Doing art has become a chore, when it becomes school, it stops being fun.

I go here as a Vocal Major & I gotta say that LaGuardia is absolutely amazing. Students & teachers here are so loving & caring. Even though it's a performing arts high school, it IS a specialized school and they really care about your schoolwork. It isnt all fun & games like some people think. Its hard work but it is amazing.

Although there aren't cliques per se, the majors are pretty separated. The academics are just average. If you're the average student, you'll manage here just fine. The day is LONG, especially if you're a sophomore or a freshman, as you need to get all your years of math or whatever done. There are lots of floors and even though there are escalators, there's always at least one that doesn't work and they're constantly breaking. sure, everyone here is talented, but not extraordinary. It's a little overrated. A few of the teachers aren't too...well..."educated". But I still love the diversity of students and how it's an art school. The glamor sure wears off after awhile, though.

I love this school. I'm only a freshman, but I love all my classes. Since I have almost all my classes with different people, it's very easy to expose yourself to others and make new friends. Some of my teachers are a little eccentric, but most of them are amazing and manage to make me laugh during their lessons, yet still get all our work done. My only complaints are the fact that there are so many floors. We do have escalators, yes, but sometimes some of them won't be running, which is a bit of a hassle since my first class is on the top floor. Another issue I have is also a love-I'm constantly moving. This makes it easier for me to handle my ADHD, since I don't have to sit as still for as long as I did at my old school. It's a long school day though (from 8 to 3:40) so as soon as I get home, I can't really collapse and relax-I have to get started on my homework, which there is typically 1-2 hours of, depending on your classes.

There's no other option like this in NYC (or in surrounding areas that I'm aware of), public OR private, that is as dedicated to fostering the creative/intellectual energy of its' students as this one. A school as culturally and creatively diverse as this, is as essential to the core of the soul of NYC, as it is to the core of this country as a whole.

There are the most talented teachers, students, and deans at LaGuardia. Because of the dual curriculum students are required to balance a full academic day as well as 3 to 4 periods of the art that they love. EVERYTHING that the students create from plays to paintings, from symphonies to sets, from ballads to ballets, and everything in between is full of passion and hard work. The shows of all mediums are better than most professional work and the students are driven not only by self-motivation but school spirit as well. It isn't called the 'Fame' school for nothing.

There is no other school in this entire city like LaGuardia High School. This school allowed me to see the world through music, and open my mind to experiences that I would've never otherwise have been a part of. It's hard not to feel nostalgic when you remember that i didn't just go to any old high school, i went to a place where expressing my feelings and individuality through art was the whole point of me going there everyday. Those who have experienced this... magic, really, know what I mean! Go LAG!

The ability to really become anything you want is possible in this school because the choices one has are beyond the choices given in any other school. The students obtain both an amazing education and the arts! The blend is so perfect that the students can succeed without an excess of stress like one would think. The culture is diverse and everyone is friendly towards each other; therefore, its unlikely that one would be friendless in this school. The visual, academic, musical, and artistic appeal this school has would make anyone's eyes light up at the thought of the amount of talent and success this school cultivates.

LaGuardia provides a unique educational experience by balancing passions for the arts with a robust academic program. I am so pleased to have the opportunity to spend four more years being in the presence of such dedication and stellar talent.

La! is a great school because it's more than a school; it's a family. We all help each other study and do well. Everyone accepted has a good heart and we thrive for the best. Our teachers are well trained professionals. They make us the Future movie stars, Broadway pro formers, great architects and composers of the new generation. Every day we work hard to prove that we deserve our spot and we take it seriously. No other school has a better work ethic at being the best and having fun. We organize our own clubs to individualize our own thoughts. We compete in sporting events and give our all. We sponsor charity events and help our community. We have discussions with our teachers to create an open relationship. We are not your ordinary school. We are La! LaGuardia Arts!

You go into LaGuardia hoping to learn more about your craft, but u come out with much more, friends, intellect and thorough insight on the world. Although the school is great, it doesnt make its students. We make the school! I gotta pull a Kanye and say 'duces' to Stuy. because LaG! is the best. '09!!

LaGuardia is a high school that spends a lot of money with the arts. Now that budget cuts have approached, the freedom for students to use their supplies freely has become limited. Meaning our art is becoming limited. The best thing about LaGuardia is starting to diminish: it's freedom to express through the arts. Budget cuts will only hurt students academically and through the arts. There are always school letters sent out to students asking for donations, which shows the school's need for money. Students are limited as to when they can take a certain course. For example, Physics courses are only offered to juniors while Pre-Calculus is also offered to lower class men once again. This means that if a senior just finished Trigonometry, they have to take AP Statistics or AP Calculus AB or even drop the class, which limits their education. Some students are told to take AP Statistics for it is a similar course to Pre-Calculus, but those 2 courses definitely differ. If a senior decides to take AP Calculus AB then they will go through stress and pressure to catch up with the material they didn't have a chance to learn. Hence, they need to learn the materials on their own. I hope the funding goes to LaGuardia because the school needs it and because laGuardia is starting to lose the vibe of freedom to create and express, which is what makes LaGuardia different from any other school.

Simple, I loved this school. It gave me a chance to perform and improve my musical ability. Without this school, I would not be able to experience being a true performing instrumentalist. It let me experience my first symphony orchestra solos and etc... It allowed my character to build from the start to blossom into a more mature adult. This school gave me great opportunities other schools can not give me. It is truly a great experience and plus they are called the Fame school for a reason.

It was - hands down - one of the most enriching experiences of my life! Everyone that graduates from LaGuardia HS knows that we would all go back to High School if we had the chance! The students, the teachers, the talent, the skill, the staff, the educational development, the deep serious exposure to the arts in all of its forms, the friends we've made, the organizations that work with LaGuardia, the Lincoln Center area, and much more makes LaGuardia so worthwhile. However, I don't want to take up all of your bragging space. There are plenty of other people who will brag just as much and highly!

LaGuardia brings its students exceptional instruction in the arts and in academics in a way that no other school has yet matched. It provides for students with a passion for the arts, a place to dance to their hearts' content for three hours with live music accompanists and then run downstairs to A.P. Biology! LaGuardia kids are not just dragging themselves to a school everyday to sit through required classes to get a high school diploma, they actually WANT to be there. They have gone through auditions and chosen LaGuardia because it caters to their special interests, whether it be visual art, music, dance, drama or technical theater. LaGuardia has sent its graduates everywhere from conservatories to ivy league schools, but has only done so because of the resources it could once provide for them! Budget cuts are making departments cut down on the amount of class time they can give to the students, get rid of certain honors and A.P. classes, and cut down on important school-wide productions such as the annual musical, opera and Rising Stars show. These are the productions that make LaG so unique! Things like dance classes and music lessons can be extremely expensive, and many students would not be able to have them if it weren't for LaGuardia, a public school that offers them top-notch for free. These students deserve to have a school that can meet their passion for art with the resources to help them flourish.

Our school is great!but since budget cuts, many essential programs have been omitted, such as the vocal class for dancers. In an arts school, these programs are necessary for us to learn as much as we possibly can about our talents!same applies to academics, where as many teachers have been laid off, and seniors of 2010 didnt have the option to take pre-calculus this year, which is required for most colleges. Our school is in need of money to help its students get the best education possible.

Fiorello H. LaGuardia should be used as the model for how all high schools across America are run! Nothing compares to the 'fame' experience - the act of nurturing one's talents while developing one's mind, all while living within the social experience that is New York City. I promise you that unless you attended a specialized high school yourself, you will never know how inspirational it is to learn in the midst of overwhelming talent. In essence, we are all stars burning at our own intensities. Our hallways generated many of the famous people you know - and no, it's not that famous people attend LaGuardia, it's that LaGuardia creates noteworthy individuals. So show us some respect and give us the money, because at the end of the day WE'RE STILL A PUBLIC SCHOOL STRUGGLING WITH PUBLIC SCHOOL FUNDING.

I am an alumni of LaGuardia highschool and I have no problem saying it is the best highschool in nyc -because it's the absolute truth. Nowhere else can you get the diverse, eccentric, eclectic student body that makes up LaGuardia every single graduating year. Our Halloween parade is off the hook. Our talent and interests are phenomenal. Nobody is class queen nobody is left behind. That's community, that's LaGuardia.

Fiorello H Laguardia High School is amazing. We get taught music, arts, and performing arts better than any other school. It's like attending a prestige conservatory/arts institute, for free. No other school can offer that. And everyone expects us to be dumb, since we're 'artists', but the honors program in Laguardia is anything BUT easy. We get the same academics others schools can offer, along with 3 or 4 performing arts/music/arts classes for free. Overall, I believe it's the best school there is, from public schools, that is. The people there are very friendly and motivated, and the teachers approach students in unique ways, targetting everyone's attention and learning methods.

This is a school where there are no cliques, no popular cheerleaders, and no 'geeks', everyone is excepted here. We are all so different but its great to walk into school knowing that everyone here loves to do what you do. you can completely throw yourself into your craft, and it is respected in the highest level. I have never seen such school spirit, or just spirit in general. i cant imagine being anywhere else.

LaGuardia provides a unique education for NYC public school students. It provides a conservatory level music/drama/dance/art/technical education and a strong academic education. The students who attend LaGuardia worked hard to get in and have a passion for what they do and what the school offers. The level of talent is extraordinary. The concerts and shows and art shows are at the highest level. The teachers want to teach there and are uniformly strong. The administration is responsive and constantly working to make the school better. The college and guidance offer are committed and excellent. I can't say enough to express my enthusiasm for LaGuardia and the outstanding education my daughter received there. She is now attending her first year at Oberlin College.

It's thanks to LaG that I decided to make art my life. I think that if I had gone to another school I probably wouldn't be who I am today. LaG let's you be anybody you wanna be just because there are no clicks. There's so many different types of people there, so many artists, that no one every really turns you down. You learn how to be more creative and open to the world and new york. I'm in college in the city now and if it hadn't been for LaG I probably would be lost out here. I really learned how to get around. I'm really thankful for the experience I got and if I could go back, I'd do it all the same all over.

It is truly a unique school. It has produced several accomplished artists, musicians, actors, technicians, doctors (and they are considered our failures), designers, graphic artists, bankers, the list is endless. The teachers are unusually dedicated and excited about teaching this special brand of student that can carry off an extra burden of a full load of academic classes as well as a half day of studio classes. They get along with each other and there is no animosity between the different specialities. You can go into any classroom at any time of day (and even after school) and you will find learning and working going on. No matter where you travel you will find an alumnus somewhere who will speak of Laguardia with only fond memories. It is truly a wonderful school that deserves the extra money as well as the outstanding reputation that it is earned throughout the years. FAME,,, ROCK ON!

They taught me so much, before then I couldn't even learn. scene: freshmen instrumental major playin the trumpet in the hallway, two breakdancing dance majors along side her, quiet yet furiously busy art major sketching out the scene in the far corner with a drawing pad, tall slender drama major rehearsing a monologue silently and a vocal major reaching the high Fs of a verdi aria. Over-dramatization and elaboration for a possible movie? I think not, just another tuesday morning at LaG.

Its a school where everyone can fit in no matter who they are. It also gives a rare opportunity for students to explore and develope their talents, especially since every other school in the city, not to mention the country, is cutting arts classes. It was my dream school and is definately the best school out there.

Our school is by far diverse, highly motivated and acceptionally talented. There are a wide range of classes available for anyone; they are vigourous, benefitting and educational no matter what the course. The best part is that our school is not only acceptional in academics but in the arts and performing arts as well. All the teachers are highly motivated and friendly as well. Everyone is a huge family at LaGuardia and we work together on everything! I am extremely proud to be a student here. Its so different form other schools. Its the only school that has teachers and students dressing up in crazy costumes for Halloween. It is also the only school that has the chorus come in to classrooms singing Christmas carols during that time of year. Then there's the band who goes up and down the hallways from the first floor all the way to the 8th, playing music during holiday seasons. Activities int his school are unlimited!

Because it's the only place in my life i've ever felt completely open and happy. Everyone is so comfortable around each other, while my other schools were so dismal, everyone pretty much hated each other. It practically saved my life. Besides this, we're trained acedemically extremely well. we're not given grades easily like other specialized high schools because our grading system is honest, not rigged just to make our school look better. but if you test a laguardia kid and another kid from another specialized high school, we know just as much as them, maybe more. I didn't even go into our awesome arts stuff....

I am a junior vocal major at laguardia high school. I love my school because it is a complete safe-haven for high schoolers who have a passion. This sets us apart from the rest of the NYC Public High Schools because we are taking part in a double major program unlike any other in the country. The performance groups are rampant throughout the school and there are always chances to perform if it's truly what you're passionate about. Everything from chorus concerts, to drama festivals; musicals to dance performances. I love laguardia because it's everything i could hope for in getting a great musical education in high school.

When I first got accepted to Fiorello H. LaGuardia I was petrified at the thought of traveling by train to and from school everyday, but I can't imagine having gone to any other school. I graduated in a class of over 500 kids but there is still a great sense of community and being in the heart of NYC has given me experience I could not have gotten anywhere else. The arts programs are absolutely extraordinary, the productions were comparable to broadway, but have suffered due to budget cuts. And where to school excels in arts in does not suffer in academics or extracurricular activities. The kids that attend this school wake up every morning wanting to go to school and they deserve the essential resources necessary to provide them with the education they expect to earn from attending LaGuardia.

Where else in NYC can you have the opportunity to Create art, Dance, Perform original music compositions, Design Stage sets, or perform full broadway musicals? LaGuardia, is the only public school in NYC that can do all of that for you. LaGuardia is like no other school. I Love Fiorello H LaGuardia HS because its the best school ever!!! Students are able to not only learn from the very best but do what they love at the same time. Our majors help prepare us for college and it exposes us to various environments. The academicas are really great and our aim is to get 85 or higher on state tests and regents but since the teachers know their subjects so well we are able to get 90s and above. In our majors we are all able to perform and show others wht we have learned and how we, as individuals, have improved. The school environment is also terrific. Since our school has so many students and majors we don't hav the drama of cliques and everyone gets along with eachother. Drama majors hang out with Art majors and Seniors hang out with freshmen. There aren't any bullies and the teachers are nice and respectful towards all the students in the school.

The bathrooms are great, no mice and the school lunch could probably be mistaken for something you'd order at a five star restaurant. However that isn't just what laguardia offers, it allows you to take any class you'd like in any subject and the guidance counselors are so helpful that they call every day just to see how my family and i are doing. The kids are the ones that really make up the school. I'm currently a senior and i'd really like to thank all the boys in my grade for making the past years at laguardia the best.

I really don't know where to start. All the deans are so nice and respectful, I like that they think of their job as a service and not as a discipline. I really like the principle who's always around trying to converse with students. Once i saw her in the girls bathroom, she said she was playing hide and seek with one of the deans. She then gave me a late pass and told me to use it whenever i wanted to cut class. All the teachers are so attractive and attentive, especially the history teachers. The kids are really great. None of them have the classic pretentious art school attitude that many other art schools have and all the boys are so nice. They all try to share whatever they have with the girls. Last week I forgot to wear my shoes and i remembered as soon as i got to school. One of the boys in my grade came up and took off his sneakers and let me wear them..gotta love the sneaker heads. I would recommend this school to anyone and everyone who loves great people.

I am a senior vocal major this year and I would be a very different person if not for LaGuardia, and not in a good way. Students need an outlet in their lives. some are fortunate enough to love academics enough for that to suffice, but for most that is not enough. LaGuardia fulfills all these needs of a student and then some. I love LaGuardia

Laguardia H.S has the most diverse and talented musicians, dancers, artists, and techies that any NY city highchool could ever had. They have great academics, opportunities for college, and an amazing staff that prepares for any conservatory or unviersity of your choice. Besides the academics and speacialized classes of your major, they have a great faculty and staff that work with you to achieve your goals. The guidance and college offices are very specific with every student's needs, so I would have to say we are pretty prepared for whatever challenges life may bring us in the future academically and artistically.

LAGUARDIA is one of the few specialized high schools in New York City. We receive extra funding for the art programs in our school from the city, but lately there have been major budget cuts. Our school is amazing, and has one of the most diverse student populations. People are extremely friendly, and learn from each other everyday. Although we are just high school students, many of our students' works can be compared to professionals. Our school musical, talent show and opera are usually sold out in a few days (our concert hall seats up to 1500). The school is full of life, and the teachers create a wonderful environment to improve our skills. Our school has several painting studios, dance studios, recording studios, and several smaller theaters. Although we are an art school, our academics is one of the best in the large city. Our school has a high graduation percentage, and many of our students move on to the top universities in both the academics and art world.

LaGuardia High School is truly one of a kind. As a student there, I have received so many wonderful opportunities to explore myself artistically as well as academically. In middle school and freshman year, I was a C student, but the wonderful teachers in LaGuardia have encouraged and inspired me to work harder and get the grade I really want. I now have a 96 average, and have been getting outstanding remarks on standardized tests. The whole culture of LaGuardia is spectacular, and being that it is so art-centered, self expression is encouraged, and we can dress however we like (as long as it is not inappropriate), and we can truly be ourselves. We are very culturally advanced, and gays are widely accepted and can feel free and open to be themselves in LaGuardia Arts High. The gifted students of LaGuardia inspire eachother, and each performance continues to increase our school pride. LaGuardia High School provides an experience to it's students that they will forever value. Not only does it teach the arts and academics spectacularly, but it's culture teaches us morals and advanced ways of seeing the world.

I love LaGuardia because it provides a wonderful environment for artists of many types to grow and increase their potential. A student that sings can go to a school that is not arts centered and be the best singer there by default, but at LaG they can get the chance to use all of their talent every day. Although many people get their (often romanticized) ideas about LaG from the movie Fame, it is not exactly like that. Not every one there is getting famous and living the dream, but they are in a place where, maybe, they can. LaGuardia provides essential arts education for aspiring actors, singers, dancers, visual artists, musicians, and those interested in technical theater. It also has a rigorous academic program, of course. It's such an amazing experience to be surrounded by so many creative people.

I think it is a great school because it focuses on both academics and things of personal interest. Something you considered a hobby before can be expanded on and even made into a career in the future with help from the wonderful teachers at Laguardia. It is a school for all and is strong academically as well as in its specific studios. Teachers actually do care a lot about your grades and your understanding of the subject matter. If you don't there is always tutoring offered to help you when you stumble. It is a school with great and ambitious people. It is not enough to be book smart, to be successful you have to know yourself too. LaGuardia helps you achieve that. I graduated from LaGuardia a vastly different person as when I entered. It was a fun environment, and even though I expected it to be like the Fame movie and it didn't quite live up, it still proved to be a lot more fun than boring normal schools. I made friends with musicians, artists, dancers, singers; people I didn't think I would ever meet. People with talent. I met some of my best friends there. Through all the drama, stress from work and tests, and the awkwardness of entering a class where I don't know anyone, what I thought was going to be just another step in my education turned out to be a second home. I came out there not any better at math, science, history or speaking spanish, I came out of there a better person. I learned things about the real world that not everyone will be able to tell you, and the faculty, and especially my fellow students helped me launch full force into college, where I am excelling at everything I do. Without LaGuardia, I would be a boring, introverted shell of my current self, and I never regret to have gone there for one second.

This school is eclectic and funky. It is a community of artistic students that range from singers to dancers to artists. The movie "Fame" is based off this school and it really gives its students a solid educational foundation in the arts and in academics, and a sense of pride and belonging. Everyone fits in at this school and although it may take some time, everyone finds their niche.

Its where all different types of students can come together and not only get an education but express themselves through the different arts. Its a gem in the middle of the city located near its contemporaries; Juliard and Lincoln Center. The teachers, both of academics and arts, are amazing individuals each with their own unique set of life experiences that they bring into their classrooms.

It has the most amazing community, who care for each other with all honesty. The diversity unifies the student body in such a way that I have never seen before. The arts in school allow the students to grow into individuals, not just one of many in a "mass production" school, where everyone has to look, act, and feel the same way. The teachers advocate individuality, personality, and finding yourself through your art. I am so thankful for having attended this school.

A good school is made up of good people, and I was sure of that when I went there. I've graduated from LaGuardia, but it was such a great environment, having a diverse student body, where expressing yourself was something normal and everyone didn't have to pretend. Of course being an art school, there really were some talented kids. The unfortunate part of it was the budget, and everybody couldn't have the best that their trade had to offer, or enough money to supply everyone with what was needed.

i love how our school is extremely special, i have pride in saying i attend laguardia because it automatically speaks loudly for itself. it's a talent school, so it tells people that i must be talented in something. also i love the fact that our school is not just focused on the arts but strongly on academics and sports. we are very competitive in all fields and are neck and neck with top schools in our region like stuyvesant. i also love the diversity in our school, there is so much to learn from so many people! one of the best schools ever!

This is the best school in the world. The students love it, the teachers love it, and no one wants to leave. Rather than being glad to finally be out after graduation, we find ourselves really sad and not wanting to be out because the school really has a great impact on the students' lives in one way or another, whether they continue studies in the field or not. Laguardia makes high school life amazing and totally different from all the cliche and stereotypical high school life that people always go on about. LAG FOR LIFE!

my school allows the young preformers of new york express themselves and be themselves. everyone supports eachother and works together. but lately it's been getting really really hard to enjoy our school (being a preforming arts school we kinda need more money than regular schools) when classes that make this school what it is are being cut left and right. the budget cuts are effecting everyone, and no one likes them obviously. But so many of my friends agree that the school is losing it's uniqueness because there is not enough money.

As a student whose been an art major (as a freshman) and vocal major now, Lag is a just a hype. as in you go for the name so colleges can say their ooos and ahhhs that you went there. I strongly suggest kids to check it out before you sign yourself up b/c for some kids it can be really hard to find your place there, since Lag is so large. don't get me wrong if you want hard work there are ways to recieve it but you have to be able to work independently b/c the teachers are really overwhelmed and if you don't make yourself noticed you'll just become a shadow. and all though it may seem I'm only bashing Lag it's because you've probably heard all of the good. over all i couldn't see myself any where else but it not for everyone so choose wisely =)

My son is a sophomore in instrumental. Coming from a small private school, I did wonder about the transition. But he has been nothing short of ecstatic from day one. Interesting kids, inspired teachers, lots of homework -- but mostly meaningful and rarely more than he can handle -- even in honors classes. I agree with the parent who describes LaGuardia as a 'social miracle'. My son's private school taught inclusion and acceptance. At LaGuardia, the kids live it every day, i.e., there are many different ways to be cool. My son chose LaGuardia over Bronx Science and neither of us has ever looked back.

This school has provided my daughter with an impressive academic experience and a good background in music. This fall she will attend one of the best colleges in the country. Socially, LA is a miracle: no 'in' group, no 'losers' no 'mean girls' etc. Rarely, a teacher is a real jerk. The school is very responsive to problems that may arise from this if the circumstances are valid. I'm very happy with with my daughter's 4 yr. run at this school.

I am a recent graduate & I loved the time I spent at LaGuardia. My high school experience was far better than one I feel I would have had at a regular school. The 2 hour commute was annoying at first, but as I got used to it, I enjoyed my time a lot more. The academics are challenging when you apply yourself, but seeing as how it is a very large school, (and grows larger each year) its very easy to slip under the radar. The dual programming is nice, because you get a nice balance of general education and one in the arts (dance, drama, fine art, instrumental and vocal music and technical theater.) College planning at LaG is what you make it though, you pretty much have to seek out the help you need for the most part. It just takes focus and planning! Best of luck

I am the parent of a senior in the Art Studio. Academics and Arts education have both been outstanding. Teachers care and are supportive, nurturing and encouraging. My daughter also travels from the far reaches of NYC and after 3+ years still agrees the commute is worth the outstanding education she receives in such a unique and inspiring setting. She is abundantly prepared to compete for the college of her choice as well as excel in a rigorous college experience. If we could choose all over again, the choice would be the same.

I have had the good fortune to be a parent of a senior in the Drama Department at LaGuardia High School. Even though he has a long commute, my son can't wait to get to school. The quality of the teachers both academically and in the specialized areas is astounding at the high school level. He will face the world in his chosen profession with skills usually attained at the begining college level which will give him an incredible advantage. Kudos to this school for giving my child and other students a great all around education.

As a parent of a former student, I found this school to be excellent academically. I was looking for strong academics and not just a specialized arts school. We moved to NYC from another state just so she could attend this school. She is a singer, but chose to major in Drama which has a broader scope of classes, including vocal, dance and other related subjects. The energy in this school is amazing; just attend any performance and watch the kids applaud and yell and encourage their classmates! This school provided her with the groundwork to continue her studies at a NYC conservatory in classical opera.

I'm a current vocal major freshman at Laguardia. Here's my review:It's just too big. There's always confusion with scheduling and who belongs in what classes. Students need to really be aware of graduation requirements because the school could be giving you a program card that doesn fit your needs, in these instances, you need to become buddy-buddy with your guidance counselor in order to suceed though most of the counselors arent very nice. It is a good school for music, but if you have any other passion besides your major, there arent any out of major in school classes. such as, i love writing but they dont offer that. i love art too, but since im not an art major, i cant take that either, yes there are tons of clubs, but the long hours and double homework duty make clubs too big of a commitment. i recommend it a little

every kid gets accepted based on a very specific high level of talent yet the teachers and staff always use the same select few kids to perform over and over again! The encouragement and wonderful support is mostly amongst fellow students. Teachers fail in this category simply because they do not spread nearly anywhere near an equal opportunity to be on stage to anywhere near one tenth of the talented school population. Maybe its because at LaGuardia its more about the teachers & staff then it is the kids. One never knows who will ultimately make it out there!- But be sure they will calim them as one of thier own when fame really does reach!- Well a lesson to all of you teachers and staff. People cant always remember exactly what was said but they never forget how you make them feel.

I am very disappointed with LaGuardia. The music program is very good. The teachers are excellent. However, in the academics, half of the teachers seem to not really care. Many are uninspired and disorganized. A child can cut out of 7 classes (one subject/one semester) and the teacher won't bother to call the parents to let them know that their child hasn't been in class. Kids are treated like numbers, rather than individuals. In one instance I contacted the school about a problem, was switched around to 5 different people, and 2 of the responses I got were 'There are 2,400 kids in this school.' Well, I don't want my child to be thought of as 1/2,400, but as the special individual that she is. For children with serious musical talent, the 7+ hour day plus the long commute from the other boroughs leaves very little time for practicing their instruments.

It may sound good but its not really any special. I would rather have gone to a school like Thomas edison Highschool in Queens. The teachers here are picky and favor some students while leaving others out in the dust. Academic-wise its okay though not up to most of the student's standards.

As a graduate of this school, I can tell you first hand that this is a wonderful environment. The diversity of students, teachers, and courses make it a very unique school. Academic standards are high, not taking a back seat to the arts. Although they could focus more on computers. There are many clubs and varsity teams to join, though most of the school spirit is focused on the arts, as it should be. There is no other school in the city that I know of that takes the arts so seriously and puts so much effort into developing talent. As a former student and as a family member of hopeful Laguardians I can honestly say that most faculty members strongly encourage parent participation and the PTA is very involved in school productions and activities.

This school is an amazing asset for those interested in persuing the arts and for those who wish to determine whether this is the right option for them. The academics are looked at with as much scrutiny as the arts. During my years there between 1998 and 2002 i received nothing but support from the students and the parents. I recomend for those who's children want to persue the arts intensively to allow them to attend this high school.

I'm a former student of this school. I tell anyone and everyone that will listen that this school changed my life. My advice to any vocal majors that are reading this is that make opera your best friend for the next 4 years. You won;t find a better school that will assist you w/ tapping into your gift. Please take advantage of every opportunity presented to you. Don't wait for your spot. You'll have to make one for yourself. Everyone there is wanting the same thing you do. Many are called few have whant it takes. If you're hungry it's great place to connect. L.A.G. FOR LIFE!

I'm a sophomore vocal major at LaG. i think the school is great for the arts but in my opinion it;s too big. the teachers only have about 4-5 months to get to know each student and each teacher has over 100 students. because of the size, its hard to discipline also. parents are very involved (i speak from experience) and the availability of music, art and sports is extreme. they have every sport and every music and art you could possibly want. the academics are very good but there are some bad teachers, like in every school. you have to stand up for yourself in order for something to get done. there's extracurricular activities for everything and everyone.
