Develops empathy: Strongly agree

Since the preschool especially focuses on social development, students learn how to be part of a group—how to express themselves properly, how to respect others, how to empathize with those who are different.

Develops honesty: Strongly agree

The Calhoun School absolutely puts great weight in teaching students to be responsible, caring members of a community from the “cluster” level to greater society.

The Calhoun School has been a wonderful experience so far for my two kids now in 2nd grade and pre-K. The teachers are highly qualified, inventive, and caring individuals of all backgrounds, the program is so well designed around human development, and the school truly engages kids to learn in a positive environment. With the small class sizes the teachers can cater to different skill levels and learning styles and students seem to absorb material so much more deeply with the experientially-based curriculum. And on a social level, the school and community are progressive which is certainly something we were looking for.

I love Calhoun. My daughter is growing into a self-assured, vocal, creative person. The small class sizes really enable the teachers to focus on each child's interests and passions. The community of parents is incredible too. Steve Nelson is a fantastic leader and has brought the school to new heights in the past decade.

I'm a first grade parent and I love the lower school. It is beautiful and organized. The teachers are wonderful.

Calhoun is great for little kids, my only wish they would start learning anything after K. As for bullying, it exists and nothing is being done about it, especially if your child is school workers' kid-they are allowed to stay in school and bully anybody. Teachers are mostly actors and writers, especially grade 2-4, unexplainable to me why they don't hire professional teachers-Barnard is close by. The Head Master should have been changed a long time ago, maybe the school would change for the better without him, he suggests for you to leave if you disagree with him. Level of education is low, a lot of parents are forced to hire teachers outside the school to help with education. Money wasted. Languages are not taught to speak, after many years my kids still doesn't understand Spanish. Not looking forward to Mandarin. Stay away from this school if you can. Your kid will test lower then kids from other schools, 2 grades lower.

My children received an excellent education at Calhoun. The MS and HS are intellectually inspiring schools. The division heads are caring, dedicated individuals. The teachers are passionate about their subjects and communicate their passion to the students. It was challenging academically, overall an amazing experience for my children.

I took my child out after 6 years. They are too permissive, no structure, don't teach basic reading skills. The failure to get involved allows bullying to exist, the administration will not get involved so bad behavior flourishes.

Calhoun has received criticism for many substantiated reasons. While their "progressive" approach to education is appealing to some others, like me, found it to be a waste of money. Yes, children should be "free thinkers", creative, etc. but they NEED structure and excellent academics too which Calhoun can't provide. Calhoun seems to focus on amenities-creative a country-club atmosphere that is not conducive to learning, establishing boundaries or preparing for college. Calhoun boasts that they don't put emphasis on testing-they should -then they will see that their kids aren't learning. We will not return-we rather spend our money on a REAL education not a country club for children.

A wonderful, wonderful education. The best, really. Your kids will grow into caring, thinking, confident, and critical thinkers, who will learn how to express themselves clearly and eloquently. Yes, the academics are there, but this school is more than that--and it shows with the quality of kids that go there.
