Overall this school has been great. The science education is strong and kids are really given a solid foundation for understanding scientific concepts. My son writes a lot--not sure if he is being given lots of feedback on his writing, but lots of writing is a good thing. There is not that much homework, which is fine. I don't believe in busy work. The teachers are all dedicated and hard working. I gave a 4 because this school is very homogenous--upper east side wasps and jewish families seem to make up 95% of the population. The kids are all nice, but this is New York, and it is a bit disconcerting. Kids benefit from great academic experiences and friendships with kids from different backgrounds. That is not happening here.

I am impressed with the academic excellence . However, the attention to total learning , after school and student collaboration is even better . For example my granddaugther and her team did an incredable job on a paper using a computer video and graphics .

We have been very happy with Salk. It's the kind of school where everyone can find their niche, find friends and somehow fit in. It's cool to be smart and it's not one big fashion show. Many families have a lot of money, but you would never know it, because the vibe is so laidback and down to earth. It just seems like a healthy environment for tweens and young teens. I think the education they are receiving is very good, and the teachers are all smart and hardworking. I do wish they would let the parents know how their children are doing before the parent/teacher conferences and report cards. Most assignments are not returned with grades! Otherwise we don't have any complaints.

One notable thing about Salk is how happy and well-adjusted the kids that attend it are! My son is very happy here. The h/w load is manageable (although, probably like other middle schools, there tends to be ALOT of work all at once right before the end of the marking periods), teachers seem very motivated. The reason for 4 stars is my very negative experience trying to get an issue resolved last year - it took 6 weeks of phone calls and emails before it was addressed (the parent coord. never responded and the admin. in charge of the school did not act until I had to go outside of school to get help) - very disappointing. Heard from several other parents who had similar experience . Perhaps this will improve now that the principal is back from the sabbatical? The guid. counselor, on the other hand, is excellent - professional and proactive!

Not all of us can pop into meetings during the business day on one day's notice. I did email the principal to ask. Again, a school where teachers speak with improper grammar, making the mistake just corrected in the lesson, math teachers routinely make arithmetic errors and children are screaming daily is not wonderful.

Excellent school. We have nothing but positive things to report from our 7th grade daughters experience. I believe if the parent below (April 17) would have attended the meeting where the principal discussed her sabbatical she would have a better understanding of the timing of her leave. This was a meeting open to all families. We love Salk!

Salk has a great curriculum. The humanities are good, sciences are excellent, and though math is a little off, drama and other subjects make up for it. I am only a sixth grader, so I don't know TOO much. Though I am going to Hunter next year, I have found many great friends, caring and cooperative teachers, and projects that show creativity, but challenging. We also don't get much homework!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Still, class time makes up for it. I find Salk kind of easy, but others I know have found it challenging. Also, there are so many activities and events going on that you will never get bored during/after school. Plus, outlunch is a bonus!

My school is small and filled with teachers who are happy to teach there. and are passionate about what they do. Homework is not just busy work. Assignments are thoughtful and creative. Salk offers many opportunities for parental involvement. Leadership is impressive.

My daughter is an 8th grader at Salk and it has been a wonderful experience for her. The curriculum is stimulating and the teachers thoroughly engage the students. This middle school well prepares students for high school.

I love SALK! I go to SALK and I just love it! I love the fact that the teachers are so nice and engaging. I love the lessons! For example, in 6th Grade, we had to write an Egyptian story, based off of research, and then turn it into a short play. We also do a ton of hands on Science experiments! The school focuses on Math, Science, and Humanities. The homework is a good size, not too much, but enough to keep you interested and remembering the lesson. I love SALK for it's teachers, lessons, and amazing events!

Salk is a wonderful school with a welcoming and well thought out learning enviornment. When I first toured the school, I was struck with how happy and relaxed the students seemed. We're delighted that our son is at Salk. The teachers are responsive, the curriculum encourages creative thinking and problem solving, and the envviornment stresses collaboration and the joy of learning. Although the school stresses science, drama, technology, the arts, and sports are also a part of a very enriched curriculum.

this is a great school where you are constantly challenged and learn something new and interesting every day! The teachers, especially in 7th grade, are excellent and are always open to hearing your ideas and there to help you! It's awesome!

The work at salk was intensive and exciting. The small size of the school guarantees that each student will find time to talk to any teacher when they wish. There were also plenty of activities to entertain the students such as movie day. As a graduate of class of '06 who has revisited the school many times since, I can vouch for the continuous and visible improvements to the school.

this school is a great school if you're looking for a tight, small community for you child. In this school everyone knows everyone and if you ever have trouble with anything there is an abundantly of teachers there to help. The thing Salk is lacking though is an adamant sport abundance and music.

I am a allumi to The Salk School Of Science. I graduated from there 5 years ago. The small population of students at the school help students feel like individuals and help the students get the individual attention they need.

Sound academic programs, including art and physical education. 8th grade science and humanities were taught well. Infusion from NYU MD/PhD programs a plus. Principal and staff superb. No accelerated classes/Regents available however.

My son is in the 8th grade at Salk, and attending this school has been a great experience for him and for us. Each class has around 25 students - small for NYC middle school, and the teachers really connect to the students. Students call teachers by their first names, everyone knows each other in the school, and students see their teachers as resources. While the work is challenging, teachers make themselves available to help students who don't get it. Also, the kids are not overwhelmed with too much homework. While there is no music, their is an art program. Kids play sports during gym, while track and basketball teams play other schools during the season. Salk also has clubs on Wednesdays during the school days. Clubs range from chess to analyzing Hitchcock films, so there really is something for everyone. Parents are welcome to drop by the school.

This school offers a very intimate setting, all students are known by the principal by name. The school is lacking music and the sports are minimal. Since the science and math teachers are the same it can be great or awful. All in all it is a warm atmosphere.
