Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Walm, welcoming school that you should not pass up if your child has a chance to go here. Great diversity. Parent coordinator is warm and attentive. The children I saw in this school absolutely love the school and teachers. I saw nothing but good teachers. I highly recommend checking out this progressive school.

I have a son that is in The Earth School's 1/2 bridge class. This school is just OK, academic wise. My son has been in this school for two years and for two years has been a year behind.I have spoken to many parents that have taken their children out of this school, which I myself are in the process in doing. This is a great school if you like your children to learn about the enviroment, nature, etc. But if you want your child to actually pass the state exams that are inevitable and are held against them during their academic career I suggest maybe trying a more traditional school. The best thing about the Earth School in my opinion would have to be the parent involvement. The Earth School is very parent friendly.

True to child-centered, process based and experiential learning. The Earth school is a haven for all learners. My children skip to school eager to explore the architecture, river, birds and compost around them.

We feel so fortunate to have the Earth School in our lives! It is a wonderful environment for child and parent alike. The Earth School is nuturing, yet holds the child accountable for his/her actions. It has a progressive curriculum, but still has a strong emphasis on math and literacy. It allows for children to express themselves in a myriad of ways, yet also adheres to structure and routine. It has been a fabulous environment for both my children who are both well above the reading and math levels for their age group. We will be so sad to leave it in just a few short years for middle school. I could not recommend it more highly.

The staff and parents at The Earth School collaborate to know our children well and to support them both academically and as caretakers of the Earth. Come for a tour because our community speaks for itself.

The Earth School is all about being part of a community...the school, the neighborhood, the world. Children of mixed ages and abilities work together to explore and interact with the world around them. In addition to the mandated standard public school curriculum, each child is actively encouraged to pursue his or her interests to the fullest potential of their abilities. Classes are small, with a high child to teacher ratio. I wish the Earth School went up through high-school!!

What's not to love about the Earth School? I have twin boys who are now in 4th grade who started Earth School as Kindergarteners. All of our friends have always been so impressed by their curiosity, knowledge on wide variety of issues and how well spoken they are while talking about their interests and wonderings. The Earth School is a great place to send your children if you are interested in REAL EDUCATION! So much of today's education has returned to drill and kill and test-prep but Earth School gets it right. They know good education is the best way to prepare our children for any test but more importantly for a life-long passion for learning as a productive member of our society! They understand the importance of social studies and science and do a marvelous job infusing math and literacy throughout very engaging, rich core studies that allow the children to deeply study 2-3 themes over the year. My children STILL can tell you everything you ever (or never ;)) wanted to know about pigeons and the postal service, 2 of their themes from their Kindergarten core study! High expectations are not just a buzz word here. High expectations are a way of life here with amazing support for families and the whole learner.

This is a wonderful little. My children have been attending Earth since 2000. It is a special place where children learn and grow as whole people. They get a chance to see the world as the diverse place that it is. The teachers work hard to educate themselves so that they are able to guide our children in a positive, nurturing and challenging environment.

The earth school is the ideal environment for young kids. Nurturing, while focused on education. Respectful, with a core curriculum that applies to children's life and community. I couldn't have asked for a better fit for my daughter. She loves school.

The Earth School is amazing school where children learn to love learning and how to learn! They have hands on activities which incorporate the curriculum-such as gardening, cooking, studying the natural world around them. They also learn to cooperate with others in ways I've never seen in elementary school. They are given tools and guidance to resolve conflict, respect others and work well together, regardless of gender, race or class differences.

Earth School is a fabulous place to learn. The teachers are creative and enthusiastic, the parents support great programming, the principal cares. The weekly 'town meetings' for the kids and the art program run by Patrice are wonderful and the after-school program at the school is an added value.

Earth School has by far exceeded my expectations. Parent/Teacher/Administrator communication and collaboration are at the heart of the school creating a unique learning environment for the children. Student to Teacher Ratio is small, children are taught to build community with their peers, are taught sustainability, diversity, as well as reading, math, music, art, P.E. etc. Our child is happy everyday. He loves school. Loves his classmates, loves his teacher. Focus is on HOW students learn, not just WHAT they learn. Parent community is strong, organized, amazing, and super involved.

No need to brag, its good for not teaching that bragging is important, focuses on developing good humans, not robots capable of taking tests. Think of how intelligent those bankers are, who have just fleeced the american people of trillions. We need good people, people whose values are in the right place. Earth school does its best to do this in the face of the valueless and mindless education system where test good scores equal good humans.

The Earth School has taught my children to be curious about the world, confident in themselves, and caring towards others. It is a gentle and creative environment that allows children to be who they are. My kids love to learn and love going to school each day. What more could a parent want?

The Earth School is a small progressive NYC public school with teachers who do everything they can to nurture the whole child in the hustle and bustle of stressful city life. The children care for their garden, cook with the herbs they grow, program robots, stretch in yoga, run and play in gym, read with upper grade buddies, and come together to sing at weekly town meetings. The Chancellor Joel Klein said on a visit 'if all schools were like The Earth School, I wouldn't have a job.'

Earth school encourages idividuality and creativity in all students. Because of this, learning becomes a fun activity, not a task which the children dread. My child cannot wait to come to school each day to engage in new experiences in learning. earth school makes math and reading, fun, so that a child wants to learn more and more each day.

My son is in 5th grade at the Earth School. He has had a wonderful experience throughout the whole years at this school. He has developed holistically as a person, in academics, artistically and socially. Every day he is looking forward to go to school because the environment is so great.

As a district 1 alternative school, everyone is in the school by choice. The mission is far reaching, but exemplary. The academics are taught in engaging ways, with more stress on individual improvement than testing or comparative scores. Parent involvement is probably second to none, with full time access and invitation to participate.
