Very disappointing for good students. This schoo is great for troubled students because of small classes. But they don't take advantage of the small classes so each class advances at the pace of the slowest child. An awful place for very bright kids because of this and the limited course offerings. No AP or honors programs. Limited language classes. Teachers are nice but not particularly effective or inspiring.

What a disappointment. For a school with a $5.5 million budget, Newcomb does a mediocre job of educating its 65 or so resident students and puts most of its energy into begging students from outside the district to come bulk up the classrooms. End result is more students getting that mediocre education. The principal is a snake oil salesman, so take everything he says with a grain of salt.

We switched our kids to Newcomb Central School and are having second thoughts. The school has a friendly atmosphere but provides no instruction for students who are faster learners. The learning pace slogs on slowly, even with small classes. There might as well be 30 kids in the grade instead of just 5 or 6. The teachers are nice enough. The principal spends a lot of time recruiting temporary students from foreign countries. His monthly bulletins whine a lot about having to get work done. The parents and community show up and support the school no matter what goes on there. It's pretty mediocre which is too bad.

We switched our children to this school instead of a local school and it was the best decision we ever made concerning our children's education. They were taught by a 3-4 grade Master teacher and made significant gains academically, especialy in the core subject of ELA regarding reading and learning how to write a variety of reports and responses. The consistency, high expectations, structure, leadership, dedicated teaching and overall warm school environment at NCS shows! No school is perfect, all schools have "politics" but at NCS, the students' needs come first. It is night and day between the local school and NCS regarding teachers' union philosophy, BOE lack of support and weak leadership . NCS is the best "hidden secret in the Adirondacks!

School seems to aim for being OK and it is. Just that. Would hope for more individualized instruction in such a small school. As previously mentioned, not much for the gifted student and not enough for the really challenged. School seems to lack academic leadership.

With a 4 to 1 Student to Teacher ratio the teachers should have all the time in the world to advance gifted children and give the stuggling student all the help needed.

- a
All elementary grade levels are combined classes and with the increase in state requirements teachers do not have enough needed time to spend on a single grade level. If a student is above average - no incentives and student easily gets bored, if a student is below, not much time for extra help. Not fair for students or teachers.
