We love this school, our child's teacher is magnificent and the curriculum is far superior to the previous states we have lived in. The school places a great deal of emphasis on character education. My kids have not been in a school that focuses so much on bullying before. We felt welcome from the time we entered the school and met with the office staff, the counselor, and the principals. My only issue is that this school is only for 4th and 5th grades, which means we only get to stay for one more year.
This is my daughter's 4th school in 5 years and is the worst one she has attending. The teachers fail to challenge the students that are more advanced. My daughter spends most of her time assisting the other students in her class. I don't send her to school to be a teacher's aide, I teach her learn.
This school is terribly behind. They are doing work that is at least 6 months to 1 year behind what my daughter was doing at her last public school. It wouldn't be so bad if they gave gifted children something to do, but after talking with the principal, the guidance counselor, and my daughter's teacher the only thing they have come up with is to give my daughter extra work (not anything further advanced than the other kids, just more worksheets of the same subject/level) to keep her busy. I showed them her SRA reading levels from her last school (9th grade reading level) and their answer to that was to put her at a 5th grade reading level instead of 4th grade - not much of a help. After interviewing at other schools in the area, we have decided to put her in Immaculate Heart Central (IHC) next year. They are the only school that seems to be happy to help children excel rather than just keep them busy. I am sorely disappointed in IRIS.
We are a military family and have moved quite often. My daughter has really enjoyed the past two years at the Intermediate School. Her teachers have been wonderful and supportive of her speical needs. The Principal has been great to work with concerning any concerns we might have. My daughter loved being on the intramural basketball team. We will miss this school. Thanks for a great two years.
We arrived here from Ft Bragg in 2004. My son had a horrible time adjusting to the move from NC to NY. Within in just a short amount of time he fully adjusted, made friends and loved all his teachers at Indian River Intermediate. He is now attending the Middle School. The transition from the Intermediate to Middle was made easy for him due to the support of the the staff at the middle school. The had most of the staff to include the school counselor the day we toured the school. I can communicate through email with all of his teachers. I can also check his grades online. He is playing football for the first time. The NY state laws and rules are horrible but one of his coaches, Coach Grey is Great! He comes off as arrogant but he is there for the team!
My son has been in this school since the beginning of this year and so far I think they are very accepting, caring and a wonderful addition to the school district. Quite a few of the staff I know from Calcium Primary and the Middle School. I believe they are absolutely a great bunch of people. I have loved the school district since we moved here almost six years ago. It is the best school district my children have ever gone to, which is why I try to keep my husband stationed here. I have been through the Calcium Primary, the Middle School and now for the first time since they opened the Intermediate school. They provide children with help if he/she is struggling like reading and math programs. They also keep the parents involved via email and they are welcomed anytime to join their child in class.
Indian River has been a great school for our child. Teachers and staff all have been very helpful.
