Let me start off by saying 5th grade is too young for middle school, that being said none of my children has ever had a bullying problem with the school and all in all it is a good school.
I graduated from this school in 2004. Yes, there is a big bullying problem there (welcome to Plainview, where the rich kids will pick on the poor kids, and honestly the bullying problem isn't that bad, the school actually does do everything they can to prevent it and stop it) but other than that, it is a GREAT school. I can say this because after middle school I was forced to move to Florida and witnessing how the schools are down here, you don't realize how good you have it. You actually have decent teachers who have good degrees and know what they're talking about. Your special education department (my brother is autistic so he went through the program) is SO good, ours in Florida is horrible. I know they've changed things since I graduated (we didn't have MAP or whatever it is) but we had things like 7th period where you could stay an extra hour of school to get extra tutoring with the teacher or for a club. We had clubs, but it wasn't an extra "period" and if we wanted help with a subject, you gotta wait until the next day in class because the teachers are gone the second the bell rings for school to end. POB Middle is a great school with teachers who DO care.
This school distrct is well managed, and the middle schools are the best of them all. This school is well managed with extra cirricular activities and many extra help programs. Excellent school.
As a student of this school for the past three years and counting, I am embarrassed to still be here. I have three solid reasons why! 1) Do not get me wrong, there are some good teachers in this school, but some would rather text, use their phone, or anything else besides teaching the students (like me!). 2) The facilities here are atrocious. The school district does not give near average attention to the facilities, and our school (especially our roof and courtyard) are crumbling by the day. 3) Many students who attend this school (I would say at least 60%) look down on others and bully them. It is really depressing, especially since I, and others, have been the victims. I heard these problems get resolved (for the most part) in the high school; but from what I see now, I don't know what to think.
Oh my God.. Total Disappointment. Huge bullying problem. That is all I have to say......
the new principal is young, bright and energetic - the students and teachers are lucky
The school an ideal school with a great facility for both academic and sports. The school strives to provide all students with the arts besides a well rounded academic curriculum.
My children are now in Middle School and High School and I am still asking, 'Who is minding the store in this district?' Show me a solid curriculum without the frills and hire teachers with motivation, a brain, and sanity. It wouldn't hurt if the staff from top to bottom knew something about child development and actually enjoyed working with children. Any support staff in these schools from guidance. MAP, paras, and special ed. personnel (PPS included) need a realistic vision of what's really going on. Few students have a voice- especially in the upper grades and school administration and staff are really not listening---they need to go nod off at home OR earn their salaries which my tax dollars are paying! Try believing the students for once when they say their classes are boring and teachers aren't teaching (texting, doing make-up, flirting, keyboarding, eating--but not teaching)--a lot of busy work
At the middle school level, the POB district is at its weakest in knowing how to work with an at risk population. Despite the efforts of a few teachers, the school system does not work.
As time goes on, I am convinced that this district is only concerned about 'looking good.' POB Central School District is just existing on its state High School rating and not on the accomplishments of the early and middle school years which by far are not in the ballpark of successful academic venues. Let's start weeding out that which hinders our garden to blossom. Sometimes that means an entire new lawn!
POB was considered to be one of the best on the island. We pay grossly unwarrented taxes for the priveldge to have our children go to school here. My daughter is now 12 and in the middle school and I more than unimpressed. In her whole career here at Plainview she has had 1 teacher whom I felt was worthy of her salary. I am hugly disappointed in this school system. Both the elementary school and the middle.
This school has been a big disappointment.I think the quality of teachers is poor and this is reflected in the test scores. When compared with neighboring schools we come up very short. It is time that principals held their staffs accountable.
Excellent school district, with knowledgable teachers, and a very well organized school system
This is an excellent school with an active PTA and a fine school administration.
This school doesn't put alot of pressure on the kids but still encourages good grades. There are plenty of extra-curricular activities and there is a huge expectation for parent involvement in all academic areas as well as school events.
