Krieger is a very frustrating school. They "bus in" about 80% of the students from the Smith Street projects because members of the "neighborhood" including teachers and adminstration that work for the City schools and live in the area will not even send their children to the school. Where does the high school principal send his children? Not to Krieger. So if Krieger is not good enough for the teachers and administration's children, then that tells you a whole lot. We are doing our damdest to sell our home or pay for private school. Our child is the top of the class and there are no services to support gifted children. If your child is disadvantaged or at risk, then the City of Poughkeepsie SD is for you. Otherwise, they number the children like prisoners, they feed horrible food and they barely get recess. The arts, music and library teachers show movies (and even the gym teacher has). They go once a week to specials and the teachers have to show movies? I don't even show movies to my children at home. The new principal was fired from the HS and is a total joke. She can keep it together. The BOE probably hasn't even stepped foot in any of the schools.

My daughter goes to this school. Im very shocked to see this as only a 2nd rated school. Where as this school does a ALOT of students and the teachers do have to at times scream in order to get them under control, I dont feel that is THERE fault. I myself feel that the Principal should do alot more to make sure those kids are doing and acting the way they should. My daughter has a VERY good teacher who pushes her to do her best at all times!!

This is a neighborhood school serving City of Poughkeepsie children. Students are inspired to do their best under the watchful care of a great staff.

MANY concerns with this school: 1. large at-risk population with varied needs that are not getting met in the city of Poughkeepsie. 2. teacher's inability to manage classrooms effectively without yelling, screaming and disciplining entire class (despite few children in class who do not cause disruptions). 3. a decline in the level of education beyond 1st grade. 4. lack of positive role models at the school--administration talks about children having respect but there's little role modeling of respect. teachers are respectful and caring and instead they take their lead from the rough inner-city attitude. they need to rise above. an excellent addition to the school is Mrs. Clark. she has just the role modeling that the school needs. she also provides caring counsel to students in need. the biggest problem is how discipline is handled. students are out of control because there is a lack of appropriate rewards and consequences. reading first is great.

My son is a Kindergartener there and receives physical education twice a week, and art and music once a week. The Reading First program is working, as he is already a very good reader and his writing continues to improve. The school recently added a significant new wing to its building and they did a very good job, blending it nicely to the older building and adding whealchair access as well as an elevator, a beautiful media center library, and computer room for the older grades. While he has encountered a few problems with certain 'at risk' kids, he has made a handful of friend there and generally appears to like the school. The PTA there is strong and involved with fundraising and other activities planned throughout the year. Overall as a Title 1 school, it holds great promise for continued improvement in its national test results and rankings.

Mrs. Hammond has all the intelligence and energy to lead forward with the new expansion! Teachers are progressive. Don't ever lower academic standards.
