Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

This school has a shoddy administration that does not handle issues professionally or in a timely manner. How can an ARTS school set such a terrible example for its students who themselves are supposed to be artists?? Better staff should be hired that are true, responsible adults and can offer our children real quality life models to follow.

I am a student but I had to signup so I just put my self as a parent. I have been in MS 72 for three years, throughout the three years I was in YSL, known as GT a few years back. MS72 is a really good school, but it kind of depends on what academy you go to, I would pick ysl over the other academies considering how many fights they have up there and all the students walking around the hallways, not plesent at all. But in my time in ysl espicelly the 7th and 8th grade I was greatly cared for and given the individual attention that I needed and now three years later I am going to a great highschool, specilized highschool to be exact, the one in bronx (i didn't want to write the name of the school), the school also has a great regents program and all the teachers have only one goal, to make you successful. so if you area parent, take it from me (a good student) send your child to ms72, but as a parent make sure he is doinf his homework evry night and if you get complaines from a teacher please have a talk with your daughter or son. MS72 reallly doesn't need anymore troublemakers.

Middle School 72 is a great school in my opinion. I think that the Gifted & Talented Academy Rocks. =] I've learned so much and have met some many people. This school gives us wonderful experiences and even though this is my first year here for 7th grade I can already see that the AP, Ms. Thompson is the best and the school staff is just remarkable. I'm glad I applied here instead of attending an average school like I.S 8 or M.S 226. At Catherine and Count Basie they make you feel welcomed and when times get tough theres are help right by . And the principal she can have fun with us we just have to know when to work. =] _ Ms.Lochansingh Ms.Thompson Ms.Severin Ms.Welcome * The Best Ever!

I am a seventh grader of ms72 and so far this school is doing a gret job in preparing me for highschool. This school has many different academies like Law and Justice, Gifted and Talented(G&T), Journalsim and a few others. I started going to this school in 6th grade and have now been in G&T for two years. This school also has a lot of preparation classes for highschool. Some kids go to an after school course called Sci-High Prep. Others that can't attend that can use the'r lunch period to go to a teacher for extra help. There is disadvantage. The amount of fighting in the school. I mean it's not the principle's fault it's just that some people just can't get along or solve their problems in an orderly manner. I still Love this school.

I am a parent of a 7th grader in the G & T Academy at MS 72. I am satisified to this point about the work being done at this school. The Math and Ela teacher are doing a wonderful job in preparing these students for all exams. I would also like to see the students being given extra text books to keep at home so that they do not have to acquire backache. Mrs. Ramsammy

I think the school is greatand has improved alot. But the bad kids at the school get treated better than the one that are good. They get away with anything and the some of the teachers are scared of them. They have bathroom limits, they close the bathroom and if you really got to go too bad. But the teachers are great and they have good methods. They also reconize your talents. But they are very expensive. The trips are very good some can be expensive and some are not.

Catherine and Count Basie Middle School 72 is a great learning environment for students. I am currently a student in the Gifted and Talented Academy , and from my perception being in this school since sixth grade and now in my senior year, the school is great. The staff is doing a wonderful job, and I am able to say that, because I am a witness of M.s.72s progression in staff and student behavior. The leadership in the school is wonderful and I am proud to say that I am a three year Gifted and Talented Student of Middle School 72. I recommend this school to any parent that believes there child can keep up with the standard which is ' Excellence'

I taught at this school last year. Throughout the year several teachers quit because of the administration. I broke up a fight a week. The principal was never around. There was a very strong perception of favoritism from the administration towards certain teachers. Teachers would constantly have there programs switched around. The APs and Deans could not control the bad students. Students would constantly steal from each other as well as teachers. I worked construction for 3 years and never heard as much profanity as when I worked at M.S. 72. Some of the people who work the after school extra help programs give the students wrong information. Class time wass constantly interrupted by announcements. A Coney Island trip that was planned for the students was cancelled on the day of the trip and no one was told. Beware! I would go on but I am limited to 150 words.

I am currently attending 72. I am in 7th grade in the G and T Academy. This school is pretty far away from my house but I am still attending because I love this school. The teachers and students here are great. I have made alot of new friends in this school. When I first came here I did not know anyone but I started to make new friends and now I love this school. When I graduate next year I will be happy to tell everyone in high school that I came from Middle School 72!

My son attends MS 72, and is presently completing the 7th grade. I am attempting to transfer him before he begins grade 8. I expect much of my son, because I know how amazing he is. This school, however, does very little to encourage or motivate students to do beyond what is merely 'expected'. My son constantly complains that the teachers 'don't care.' Uniforms are required, and certain rules are laid out, but while I insist that my son be responsible and follow these rules, many other children do not, and face no consequences. What is this teaching our kids? My son also says that he rarely sees the principle. I've written letters to her that have gone unanswered. I find this worrying. The primary focus has become keeping the students with behavioral issues in line. I want better for my son. It's no wonder that the school is doing poorly.

I am a student at Middle School 72. I am currently in the eighth grade. There are four academies; Gifted & Talented, Law & Justice, Math & Science, and Exploration & Discovery. The worst of them all is Exploration and Discovery. It's not the students at all I have friends in there that aren't bad at all. The teachers really don't care what they do. Middle School 72 has a strict uniform, if you don't wear it you will probably get detention, or a call home. The deans and AP's are somewhat ok. They say ride stuff when you're parents aren't there but once they come to the school they'll try to turn it around on you. I am very happy that I am leaving. It has'nt been the best attending here. Middle School 72 should go back to the way there were 3 years ago. Everything was going just great!!!

I am a student at 72 right now and im about to gratduate soon. Just so other children know that this school is not good. You wont be noticed if your smart. Sometimes the teachers and deans are so caught up in handling the bad kids your like invisible. There is a ton of homework and sometimes it doesn't even matter if you did it or not. You have to wear uniform and 805 of the kids dont even care. The school lunch is soooo bad and the school desperatly needs repairing. There is also alot of vandalizing going on. The principal is barely seen. Plus you know, you would pass if you kept your mouth shut. There is only a small amount of teachers that care and its real small! Anyway you should really think twice before coming here because im about to graduate and im so happy!

My son will graduate from 72 this year and was accepted to Thomas Edison. The school has special programs, which students must maintain an average of 85. The teachers provide challenging work and make the students work hard. The teachers care and will make phone calls when your child is not handing in assignments. Six students were accepted to the specialized High Schools, this is a great accomplishment because this school is on the list as a failing school. The school provides after school programs to help with classwork. Your child will due well if, they are willing to learn and work hard.

The school is going down. My daughter when in that school last year. The school was great academic and other wise. This year it's only three weeks has go bye an this been horrible. The class they put my daughter in is below her level. there was no social studies until I call the school wanted to known what was going on. I have asked several times since after the fist week of school to move my daughter from the class they put her in.

MS 72 has a great gifted and talented program in which the students are challenged and prepared for specialized high schools. Class size is around 20-25 students. The gifted and talented academy, as well as the other academies at MS 72 have a community-like feeling. The teachers are very supportive of the students and the administrators all work as a team with the best interest of the students at heart.

Initially, I was somewhat pleased with 72. My oldest daughter graduated last year, she did very well. The teachers were concerned about her progress and the work that she did. She had a great deal of hw, but I didn't mind. I felt even though 72 scores were not that good, she was prepared for high school. On the other hand, my son (a year younger) has a different scenario. Since the changing of the school to academies, his class has been changed with no prior knowledge, he has not been getting that much hw. there was no prepartory class for the Specialized High School Exam and I don't feel they are preparing him for high school. Teachers are absent and the quality of work seems to have changed. I'm somewhat disappointed in what is going on at 72.

I am a graduating eighth grade student of this school. I will be graduating and moving on to a good high school. As an alumni, I must say that though this school is not one of the best schools, it is a good school once you do your work and keep focused. In a program called the 'Academy', students are often pushed to strive and do their best. If they do not do well, they can be taken out of the program. However, the school itself is not bad, but what the student makes of it. If parents were more involved in this school, I know it could be a very good - and well respected - school.
