Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Best school ever -- every staff member is part of team/family and the students really feel a sense of security, family and community. Academics and social skills are both strongly reinforced. We love this school.

The Little School with a BIG HEART --> big heart indeed for all the effort, dedication, leadership and love put in by our principal, teachers, assists, PTA. I have three children attending there and I can tell you that the school has played a BIG part in their upbringing - not just in education but also on how to a good citizen and uphold true values. My children all have blossomed due to the continuous support and care given the school. I have recommended the school for my nieces and nephews - to be a part of a school and actually get quality education. School truly uphold the values and all credit again goes to the staff. To the parent on the note on staff being preoccupied during school dismissal, i appreciate even this effort as this is only ensuring the children are home on time on the bus and with the right people.

PS186Q The Castlewood School. My son has been in this wonderful school since pre-k and is now in second grade. I have seen him blossom and grow right before my eyes with the wonderful support and caring from the teachers, staff, assistant principal, and most importantly, the principal. The dedication of the entire staff and the support of the Pta makes this the best school in NY, in my eyes. The information we as parents receive from the parent coordinator and the principal is useful and helpful with our day to day challenges as parents in 2013. The pta meetings have wonderful workshops given by teachers and parents. Some teachers who participate in giving the parent workshops at the pta meetings somehow fit that in their personal schedule-that is amazing! It is the kind of school that the CHILDREN ACTUALLY LOVE COMING TO! They start EVERY day with yoga stretches, birthday announcements, and a happy feeling before they even enter class. What has also amazed me since day one is that the principal knows ALL of the children's names and even the younger siblings that do not attend the school yet. I am so happy I have a younger child who will be attending PS186 in the near future!

PS186 provides a remarkably caring and supportive learning environment with an extremely dedicated staff. The School Leadership team and an active PTA seeks every opportunity to reach out to parents and offer support to the academic mission of the school. Castlewood consistently ranks among the best of comparable schools in the city and this is a direct result of the untiring efforts of both administration and a highly professional staff. The school is unique in that it provides a vital arts program along with exceptional academics. Like most public schools, PS186 is wrestling with the challenges of the new Common Core Standards, but with time I am certain those challenges will be met with the usual pedagogical integrity and through the participation of parents and the school community.

Castlewood is a wonderful school! Everyone who works here has the best interests of the students at heart. We go above and beyond to make sure the kids are safe, happy, and well-educated. Teachers get regular professional development to make sure we are using effective teaching strategies with our students. We have high expectations of our students, and we are proud of how well they meet, and exceed, those expectations!

The school is more preoccupied with directing traffic during the dismissal than running the school. As a result you can expect a traffic cop driving around and giving tickets during dismissal which only makes everybody more nervous. What is even more ironic is that the co-op community across the street has its stuff racing up and down on sidewalks in their golf carts and yet that has yet to be addressed by the supposedly caring staff of PS 186. On the educational side, kids are still learning typing in computer classes, year after year. There are many smart boards I-pads and other technology but the kids are ..... learning to type in K, 1st grade, 2 grade, 3 grade, well you get the picture. During recess when not outside which is most of the winter early spring and late fall, kids are watching movies in the auditorium. I guess having them engaged in playing checkers, chess, or even interacting in a meaningful way would be asking too much of the staff which is too busy directing traffic outside of school.

My school is P.S. 186 Castlewood. My son started first grade and now is in second grade. I have found his confidence in his abilities to learn has increased that he is a different child. The leadership presented by the Principal is graceful, responsive and with clear vision and passion. Thank you Ms. Quinn! The PTA is what should be expected from a community, leaders who are parents first and are accountable, responsible and engaging, open and fun. The teachers are real partners with my child's education. It's a the best school in all on NYC and maybe even the world. It is an example of how every school should be.

PS 186/Castlewood is an excellent elementary school. The staff is cordial and generous with their talents. The children learn to be part of a bigger family. They have a citizen of the month program that I believe teaches the children in ways more than just receiving a certificate. It's been such a pleasure to have my son be part of and learn in this amazingly warm environment on his first time in school. I am so grateful that this school is in my district.

A great school has: Excellent teachers Strong principal/school leadership Challenging academic programs PS 186 has all of this and more. To justify a rating based on parent attendance at a child's birthday party is not fair. Parents are always welcomed in our school, and encouraged to participate in workshops, conferences, and PTA functions. We have a supportive and active PTA who work with our administration to provide programs which enhance our children's elementary school experience. I hope that the person who submitted the low ranking, based on parents not being allowed to come in for birthdays, would speak to someone on the SLT, or to our principal, to find out some of the very legitimate reasons this position was taken.

The best thing I could say about this school is that it is a public school with a private feeling. Our principal, Mrs. Quinn, knows every students names, including their siblings who are not attending the school yet! The teachers are caring and nurturing, the office staff is wonderful, the school facilities are always clean and maintained and the families are kind and very involved. My only regret is that Castlewood only goes up to the 5th grade. I wish it would expand to the 8th grade (and fast!).

The outstanding quality of this school just keeps getting better! This is my daughter's third year in this school, and I am continually impressed by the quality of the principal, the teachers and the school's academic program. The curriculum is very challenging (even for bright children like my daughter), but the teachers are so loving and kind, that they keep the kids engaged and motivated to do their personal best. Comparing notes with parents from other schools in Queens and Long Island, the level of the work being done in Castlewood goes over and beyond what other schools are doing! On this, the last day of school, my daughter said she wished today was the first day of school, so she could do the whole school year over again, because she loves her teachers so much! As a parent, what could be better than hearing that?!? To the kids, Castlewood is much, much more than a school -- it's a caring, nurturing, supportive environment that becomes their home away from home, where the staff and students alike become family. We are truly blessed to be a part of the Castlewood family...

This school is an absolute dream. The Principal is fantastic and the teachers are phenomenal. My child has improved so much since attending this school. I love the level of professionalism and diligence towards educating our children. If i have one criticism, it would be that they should hold our kids to higher standards. I believe they are capable of doing so much more. The curriculum needs to be more challenging.

The school is such a success because every member of this school's staff, from the Principal on down, genuinely cares about these children. They put their hearts into their work and continually go over and above their required responsibilities to ensure these children are not only successful academically, but in life as well. The school operates as a one, big, caring family -- a home away from home. Another exceptional aspect is the school's open door policy which encourages parental involvement. The school holds frequent events such as Family Literacy Night, Family Fitness Night, Dr. Seuss Day, Winter and Spring Concerts, and many other events, where the principal, teachers and staff of all levels voluntarily participate in order to strengthen the relationship between home and school. We are truly blessed to attend this school!

I cannot describe how genuinely pleased I have been with the principal (Ms. Quinn) and my son's teachers (Ms. Changel and DilOrenzo). They have all been so very accomodating in helping my first grader adapt to his new routine. He requires a lot of paticence sometimes, as do many children, and they have demonstrated why they became teachers of young children. Their classroom, which has a great teacher:child ratio, assists them to tailor an educational program to each child, as they frequently have small-group sessions. It's great to be in the best district in NYC, and I'm glad that PS 186 is in my neighborhood.

They welcomed my son Antonio as a new student with open arms. Anytime I have a question they are always there with answers. All in all they are all warm hearted individuals. Mrs. Quinn knows all of the children and most parents on a first name basis. Ms. Rowe, goes above and beyond. She does a great job making sure all parents know what events are taking place, icluding any work shops, days off and special events. I have had some concerns in the past and she made sure they were adressed properly. With out the dediaction of Ms. Simon, Mrs. Verde and currently Mrs. tometz I do not know where my son would be academically. Mrs. Blau along with the team of speech therapist have helped our son along the way as well. All councelers icluding Ms. Carmen are wonderful as well and very patient with all of our children. when our son goes to school in the morning I know he is in good hands. All in all we are greatful for everything they have done and continue doing for our son.

The Castlewood School is the best. Although I am a teacher in the school, I am also a parent of students who have attended schools in the same district and there is no comparison! Our principal always has the best interests of our students in mind. She knows every child by name, makes sure that she is there each morning to greet the students and bids them farewell at the end of the day. The staff is very committed, and our parents are generous with their time and talents to provide special programs for our students. Our children are kind, empathetic and loving. Castlewood (P.S. 186) is a magical place where children have the great privilege of being accepted for who they are and motivated to become who they dream they will be. The environment sponsors tremendous self confidence. Wide-eyed and excited kindergarteners grow up to become kind, contributing citizens. Mrs. Quinn and her team deserve the highest praise for the good work they do every day. The teachers and administrators at Castlewood are the most dedicated and committed group of educators. They inspire the children to love learning and make the school a place to look forward to each and every day. The school team comes up with new and exciting ideas to challenge the children and drive them to meet their potential. It is as if each child has a tailor made educational plan designed to help them shine and excel. Each child is valued for their individual contribution and is made to feel successful. They live with encouragement and consistent positive reinforcement. Castlewood truly is the little school with the big heart. Once upon a time, I was in elementary school and I remember cheering and celebrating snow days. My children sobbed last March because they were so disappointed that they couldn't go to school because it had snowed. I believe that says it all.
