Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

MY SCHOOL IS AWESOME. I am currently a 7th grader moving to 8th grade on the third floor house 3. All of you should this school rocks and is awesome. When moving into a new grade you stay on your house (this is my second year on house 3). You only change floors if you get into trouble or a new class is added. This school has its own Jr. and Sr. Arista program. This school also has an eight grade AP math and science class. This school has a system for people who are disruptive and misbehave which we call project save. I have been in this school for awesome two years and i can tell you its awesome and when or if you plan to go there have the time of your life. AKA 3rd floor is the best especially in the 7th grade when you have science the teacher is awesome (not gonna spoil it by saying how). Make sure to have the time of your life. ENJOY LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) P.S.: I am a very awesome student on the third floor

I am a very hard person to impress but LAMS was hands down the best experience as a mother a parent could hope for. Outstanding artistic sensitive teachers who are very dedicated and love to teach. I was always welcome and my child was treated with respect and the very high expectation level pushed my child to learn more. My child was ready for the HS admissions process both mentally and academically. You are privileged if you get accepted to this exceptional school. The last day of school will be a sad day for me. It's been a joy.

Louis Armstrong is an excellent school. My son graduated in June, 2013. The staff is very supportive, organized, and friendly. His peers interesting and encouraging. The music teacher is amazing. The chorus introduced him to a wide genre of music, different languages and fostered his talents. On a whole his life has been truly enriched by his experiences at LAMS!

LAMS is a great school. My son has just completed 6th grade and being here made the transition from elementary to middle school a fun experience. He made many friends and his teachers really care about his success. There is no comparison between LAMS and his zoned school. I am very happy and consider us very fortunate to have him attending this school.

LAMS is a great learning environment that helps students to thrive thanks to a combination of a caring and insightful teaching staff combined with a wide range of programs and extracurricular activities that encourage kids to learn outside of the classroom. LAMS truly gives their students a chance to lead and succeed.

My son is quite happy at the school but there are times when the teachers can raise the bar and have a higher expectation of the students. Academically it could be more challenging, especially the science program which seems to repeat itself. It has a different feel to a local community school because it is a big school but the administration seems to handle the number of students quite well. It is a very diverse school and most of the teachers are responsive to parents' and students' requirements. The school initiates different after school programs which a bonus and allows students to explore other non academic programs.

The educational standards at this school -- the teachers' commitment so high -- that I can almost take them for granted and instead be grateful for the rich offerings of electives, such as the string orchestra in which my daughter performs. The ability to aspire to high standards without 'teaching to the test' is a rare one these days, and is something for which I am profoundly grateful.

Louis Armstrong is one of the most diverse schools in our District with students representing many cultures. I am proud of all the achievements the school and students have accomplished but most of all with my two sons who have learned so much and everyday continue to be challenged. The staff and teachers at LAMS are outstanding and must be commended. The Principal, Mr. Fahey has done an amazing job and has been involved from day one in his first year at LAMS. A special thanks to Mr. Fahey, Ms. Filakouris, Ms. Del Valle, Ms. Conway, Ms. Jimenez, Mr. Grambo, Mr. Blum, Ms. Kahn for being outstanding role models as teachers and leaders at LAMS. Last but not least to Ms. Cataldo (Parent Coordinator) who continues to do an amazing job and Ms. Williams (words just cannot express). Thank you for caring and going above and beyond! I am truly grateful for your dedication!

I love this middle school! Go LAMS!! I am now an 8th grader of 2009-2010 on the 3rd floor and I love Ms. Delvalle and Ms. Greenspan. For all my life I was quiet and bashfull, but now this school turned me around and I'm not afarid to tell people my opinion (I wanna be a politician). We have AP Algebra and Bio for the 8th graders. The staff and teachers are very nice and supportive. We also have 5th graders. We have different electives of different talents and hobbies: art, band, ceramics, orchestra, chorus, and more! I think sometimes this school shows favoritizim for the kids whoes parent/s work/ed there.Or to the AV.I also think that some of the teachers show alot of favoritism and think that they know whats best when sometimes they don't. But i'm glad to be going to this school because it wants kids to try to get involed, even though most of the time i think its for a profit.

I think this school is extremely over rated. For the most part, the teachers are nice however, there is always a few teachers who makes the rest of the staff look like idiots. There is a lot of favortism in the classroom. Some teachers need to learn that kids deserve respect too. The problem is no one is willing to listen and really hear what our kids are saying. The teachers are always right. Overall, I believe I made a very poor decision by allowing my son to attend this school. LAMS should not be a popularity contest where the teachers are the ones who are judging our kids harshly. There is a lack of communication between parents and teachers. If you are an involved parent and your child is having a problem in the classroom, don't expect a simple resolution. It will linger on and on.

LAMS was a decent school for t he most part, both my children graduated from there last spring. I was a PTA parent there part time for years and found it disorganized at times but always helpful to the parents needs. The special education services were very good for the most part but accessibility to the coordinators of these programs was poor...The principal I personally knew from working on the PTA and as well found accessibility to her at times chanllenging and she was very distant and not very people orientated...My kids enjoyed their teachers save few that I found lacking in skills they sorely needed and very distant. The teachers were wonderful especially the 8th grade. There was activities for the students and the Student Government which again was selective whom they let in. It was a good school not great. The principal needs to be more hands on.

Our Son is just finishing up at IS227 and we have mixed feelings about his tenure there. While the school offers good support services and has a diverse population and dedicated teachers we really feel the curriculum has not been challenging enough and are concerned that our son is not fully prepared for a good HS. Too often we felt the teachers were held back by having to teach to the lowest common denominator. Our son complained that he was picked on for actually turning in all his homework and projects on time. The school would greatly benefit from an honors program as the overall teaching and learning environment is very good. Final note is that we were very disappointed in communication coming home from the school and found the Principal distant and hard to contact. We hope the new Principal makes a better effort in this regard.

My son has had a great experience in this school. The teachers have been great and the course curriculum especially in Language Arts has been compelling.

The school is okay. The teachers aren't enthusiastic and in no way is our school 'special'. It may be somewhat more disciplined but that's about it. The days are boring here at lams.

I think the core teachers at LAMS are very good, although there is a lot of disrespect shown to music and art teachers. I find this school to be very disorganized and the principal is unavailable to parents. The school does not cater at all to higher achievers, but teaches to the lower and middle student. All in all, I am very disappointed in this school.

The Louis Armstrong Middle School is a wonderful school for children of all abilities. Attention is paid to make sure that all children succeed. Their music programs are excellent. The band, orchestra and chorus perform both within the school and at outside venues. The robotics team has won amny awards including design and research.Children are invited to participate in the swim team which practices at the Queens College pool. The PTA is very active in supporting all activities in which the school is involved. There is always somone in the PTA office to welcome parents and make them feel at home. The parent coordinator is a wonderful asset to this school. She will help each and every parent attain whatever information they are seeking.

I teach at this school. The test scores went up significantly last year. There are many great opportunities for students from overnight trips to performing musical performances. There is a great balance between academics and life experiences.

I have found that Louis Armstrong does not live up to its great reputation. I've found my child's grades to be arbitrary. Times when I thought he should have failed he passed and when he passed he didn't get the grades he deserved. We were told about certain extracurricular activities that would be available and never were or were not organized enough and the kids were allowed to roam around the school when they should have been in a class. The upper classmen get into a lot of fights and although they are dealt with appropriately it brings the school down to the level every other public junior high school. Louis Armstrong is an o.k. school if you can't find anything better.

My daughter started I.S. 227 last September in the 5th grade. In restrospect she has maintained a steady GPA throughout all subject areas witht the exception of math. Math was extremely challenging for her and actually, this is the worst she has done in that subject. What I would like to see is more resource made available in that area. Overall the school has been great. I was most impressed with Assistant Principal Ms. Grate who took the time to meet with me and monitored my child's progress and made valid suggetions as to how we could work with my daughter to boost her confidence in math. I am very happy that she was accepted in this school and can only anticipate bigger and better results in the school years ahead. -An appreciative parent

I am a student at this school and will make this as short as possible, simply because it would take quite some time to tell you all the bad things in this school. This is not a good school to send your child to if you want advanced education. The trips are good, however the other qualities are poor. The teachers aren't really the best you can get. I do not like the school at all and won't come back for 7th grade.

I really like this school. it gave my child very much of the knowledge that he was cappable of, my child really loves his school too. i reccomend this school to everyone. it's better than any of the schools i heard of. they give your child extra help when regents are there. i really appreciate their helping and the way of giving knowledge. teachers are really intelligent and help their students with their intelligence. quality of the academic programs are excellent. my child is in chorus and he had been in the news and in the news paper. music and music teachers are amazing. i'am really happy with this school.

This is a great school. It offers a an enriched and challenging academic programs. Beside the basic academic classes, math, science, SS, LA, computer, health, and gym. All students take art and music classes. There are several music rooms and art studios. They have a band, an orchestra and a junior and senior chours. Students can be part of the many musical, theatrical and artistic preformances and exhibitons. The parent involvement is great it is very hard for the parents since LAMS is not a local communittee school. Parents and students have to travel from all over Queens to attend LAMS. Many students wake up very early to catch their bus. They don't mind because they love coming to school.

I am a student at the Louis Armstrong Middle School and I think in my opinion that it is the best middle school ever. I am in the chorus and I know for sure that we are the best when it comes to middle schools. We have a Chrous, Band, and even an orescestra. We have a great gym. Our art room is packed with supplies and we owe it all to our wonderful principal Ms. David. Our level of parent involvement is high. We have two parent teacher confrences a year and teachers can call parents on phones. We have a wonderful robotics team that wins a place every year in the contests. You see our school has tons of diffrent programs everyday there is a new one. And dont forget Mr. Grambo and his AV squad which I am also on. The teachers are great.-David Puzzo Homeroom 7-339.

My son was accepted in the 5th grade and I had expected a challenging environment for him. The teachers are good and the former Principal Ms. Opal was a gem. But this is not a good school if your child is gifted or advanced. There are no advance or honor classes. My son was bored and not very challenged academically. Last year my son took the test to the Specialized High Schools and was accepted to The High School of Math, Science and Enginnering at City College. He started High School yesterday and already is feeling challenged but not as well prepared as he would have hoped. If I had to do it over, I would find another school for my son.

From all I have heard and seen LAMS is an amazing and wonderful school, I am the parent of a child who will be attending in the Fall of 2004, and have friends who have children there as well. I have heard nothing negative at all about LAMS in my experiences, and my son is thrilled to have been accepted there. I have been to the PTA meetings, and other functions as well, and the relationships the teachers and faculty maintain with their students is one of a kind and should be the example for other schools in our city to follow! I am thankful for the opportunity to be able to send my child to a school with such wonderful credentials.

I'm actually a student going to LAMS. I'm going to be in 7th grade. I love this school. It's comforting to be here. It's a safe and fun. All the teachers are loving and caring. I don't know how anyone couldn't like this school. It's amazing!

I was accually looking for the school's official web page when i stummbled across this site. I am a current student, about to gradguate from good ol' Louiy and have no regrets about coming here. I have meet some of the finest kids from all diffent cultures, races, and overall backgrounds. I noticed though, you have to be a certain kind of a kid to love this school. Some kids wake up (like me) and am ready for the day considering everyday we learn a new life lesson. Acedemics are taught in the classroom, and outside the class we're taught about life. My teacher is no longer an adult, but my friend. I love my svhool, and haven't a complaint. I am leaving this june, knowing that i am ready for high school, and that 4 years with Armstrong were truly magical. That's prety strong thing coming from a kid.

Louis Armstrong is a great school. Right now I am a 6th grader, and I love it. The teachers are caring, the staff, is friendly and you really learn a lot. There are plenty of extra curricular activities such as after school basketball and soccer clubs. There is also a basketball and swimming team. You also have electives were you can chose from a variety of things from latch hooking to band and orchestra. It is definetely a great experience to be here. Overall, the school is really great. I can't wait until next year.

Hello! I am a former student and I had attended 227 for 4 years...I just graduated in June of 2003. Those 4 years were the best and I cherish them. My 3 other sibblings went there as well, and they loved this school as much as I do. Louis Armstong is the best middle school with caring teachers. Your child will go in there, learning to the best of their knowledge, and will graduate, being very well prepared for high school. I don't know what I would have done if I had never went to that school. I give it a perfect score and it should be #1 on your list for the best school in New York! If you pick this school for your child, you won't regret it!

My son has been in this school for 2 1/2 years and I can't say enough good things about the faculty, the programs offered and the student body. I think that the school is a gem in a system filled with mediocrity. Is every teacher perfect, no. They grapple with finding good teachers like every other school in the system. One of the hallmarks in this school is the incredible tenure of the faculty. I would say that if your child is gifted/extremely bright, you as a parent have to work with the teachers to make sure that s/he is challenged enough in the classroom.

My daughter was in a very small parochial school up until last year. She entered this school and was welcomed with open arms. Last year's adjustment to public school was made easier by the caring and professional staff at the school. The teachers, the school secretaries and the security took a very active role in ensuring that she was adjusting well. To most of us nothing is perfect, but to my daughter her school is.

I have 2 children that have attended LAMS for 2 years and we couldn't be happier. We have experienced great teachers and have had a good experience here. I worry that when my kids graduate in 2 years if they will have the same positive experiences at their high schools.

My son goes to this school and I found a parent's remark rather shocking. There will always be something to discuss openly with the school and they look forward to the discussion. I found that they responded immediately and in everyone s best interest. The programs are exceptional and unique to public schools. My child had a very rewarding first year! Cheers to the science dept. This school will offer your child much more than most after research. It is eclectic, however it's time we all get into the real world.

I have my second child in this school and although I don't think its the best it meets my childs needs I have heard from High School teachers that they feel the children are ill equipped for high school. I feel they bill themselves as something 'special' but thats only for the select few. Others must muddle along with teachers who aren't necessarily the best. The only problem is that this is middle school and it's a terrible age for academics. 5-8 is more for social development than learning and this school provides socialization in spades. My child is happy and achieves high level 3 on the citywide so I can't complain

My daughter is in her 2nd year at the school and my niece is in her last year. They both love the school, teachers who go above and beyond, the extracurricular activities and the diversity of the school. This school definitely is different from other schools and fosters individuality and creativity. My daughter is learning Italian, piano and many other things that she wouldn't have the opportunity to learn at any other school. I would definitely recommend the school to other parents.

I totally agree with the previous comment in all aspects. I transferred my child to another school because of serious lack of discipline and safety. From my experience as a parent: this is not a good school as they say it is.

The parent's comments were highly misleading. This is one of the best junior high schools around for a diverse student body, excellent teaching staff, and dedicated administrators. The comment about 'reverse discrimination' sounds like sour grapes; that has not been our experience at all. Louis Armstrong accommodates an academically and ethnically diverse student body and is a model in this respect. Most of the parents that we know are satisfied or highly satisfied with the academic experience.

I don't understand how any parent could adversely criticize this school. It is one of the best schools I have ever had the pleasure of encountering. Parents are deeply involved and the former principal was outstanding. I only hope the new principal can fill her shoes. All the teachers are inspiring and the children are incredibly productive in this environment. You should check it out yourself. You won't be disappointed.

I have had two children in this school. One who graduated in 2000 and was well prepared for high school. My other child will be graduating June 2004. The staff is incredible and gives their all to help the student succeed. I am glad that LAMS is in existance.

LAMS is an excellent school for children. My older child just graduated and was provided an excellent learning environment despite major learning difficulties. My youngest child is gifted. While in 5th grade, my child was not provided the level of enrichment that was needed. This year arrangements have been made to provide enrichment in math and language arts. My hope is that the new principal will provide expanded enrichment opportunities for gifted children. I would recommend this school to anyone.

We love Louis Armstrong! The teachers & administration treat everyone with respect. The students are challenged with exciting electives. Parents are involved. It is a community in the truest sense of the word. I will miss it when my son graduates this year and only hope that it remains in its current form for my daughter to attend in two years.
