The Lutheran Schhol of Flushing And Bayside is a wonderful school! What a difference a private school education makes. All staff and teachers care about your child and know their name in this small caring invironment. Small class sizes and individual attention is the norm here. Everyone at the school is there to make a difference in your child's life, the years from Pre - K to 8th grade are the most important. I have been volunteering at the school for 16 years and would not be any where else. Students who have graduated love to come back and visit, while many others still keep in touch. This school has provide them with a great foundation on which the have built success. Some of the graduates have gone on to become physical therapists, doctors, and teachers. Come by and take a tour of this fantasitic school, you will not regret it!
I don't provide any feedback in the past but was surprised seeing the negative comments below. So I feel the need to speak up and share our experiences. It's been the 3rd year our kids going to LSFB. We very appreciate the loving environment and all the patience teachers are giving to students. This is the most critical to us when we make decision on school selection. Our kids've been telling us that they love going to school, and we believe that this is very important in order to set solid foundation for a long journey of study for our children. The curriculum is advanced. They even start introducing basic concepts that are normally learnt in kindergarden to nursery. Small class offers close teacher-student relations and enables teachers clearly understand the learning progress of each student. The only thing I'd suggest to improve is to be more efficient on admin. & communications. We've seen some improvement, and the school starts using new tools to keep parents updated on school activities. Of course, there're still room of improvement in this regards, but we see the school is improving gradually. Overall, we feel blessed to find this school for our children.
This is my daughter's first year at the school and she loves it. She is in the UPK program and the extended day program. She adjusted very well after transfering from another nursery school. The teachers are great. She is learning a lot and has made great progress in many areas.
First glance, we were a bit apprehensive about the "not so updated" appearance, but it was very clean. We spent 4-5 hours with Ms. Hasselbach and Ms. Lopez. We basically tortured them with questions on everything pertinent to a great education and the overall well being and safety for Lay. Mr. Castellani and staff are professional, understanding, courteous and willing to help at all times. We had never met an educator who made us feel as confident as Ms. H did, in what would be best for Lay.The unbelievably small class size, the diversity of the school, and the level of detail incorporated into the educational curriculum made us feel this was the school for her. She fell in love with the school, excelled in every subject, learned to slow down, focus, and pay attention to detail. Her love and learning for God and religion isn t "excessive" and doesn t overpower the importance of her education. This school personifies what education should be. It is small enough for each child to be special in their way,and bonds all students. We sacrifice a lot for Lay's well being and education. If you re that kind of parent...LSF&B is for you.
This is my son's 1st year @ this school & he loves it there & we do too!
This school has been such a blessing to my children, they are encouraged, supported and challenged. There is afterschool and clubs and groups. The teachers are wonderful and the principal and director are awesome. We are very happy here.
i'm am korean which means that i don't speak English very well. but this school helped me to learn English. also the pricipal helped to hang out with friends. i went to this school only for 1year. but i still could go to high school i wanted. my grades were much better than my friends. also i was on the honor roll. This honor is accmoplished by having a composite average in major subjects of 90% or higher, with no grades lower than 80% on the report card.
I am a student at LSFB and i can say several things that are wrong in the 'quick facts'. First of all, the school day actually lasts 8 hours. Classes begin at around 8:15 am. All classes end at around 3:00 pm, but classes are dismissed at staggered periods, as not to overflow the street with cars where the students are dismissed. Secondly,The school does have a library, although most teachers don't utilize it because they have their own classroom libraries. In the 2007-2008 school year, there was no pre-k, however, on the date of this writing, the school board had notified students and parents through a newsletter that the school has applied for a UPK (Universal Pre-K). I believe the PTA, the students themselves, teachers, administration, and the school board is at its highest at LSFB, and I suggest you come!
The class sizes, few dedicated teachers, and the encouragement of children to do community service and be charitable are the only redeeming qualities of this institution. The chronic tuition increases, the lack of facilities, the buildings in need of renovation, the bias towards the children of staff and church officials, and an outdated curriculum are just some of what you will have to look forward to. Children who perform near or at the top of their classes will become easily bored, and the teachers may not have the time or ability to accommodate their advanced learning needs. The Math, Science, and Language curriculum is poor. If you would like your child to get into a magnet High School (Bx Science, Stuyvesant, Bklyn Tech, Townsend Harris), you would be wise to put them in the Public School system by the time they reach 5th grade.
Both my sons have gone to LSF +B since they were 5 years old. Each child is encouraged to do their personal best. The teachers strive to bring out the best in each child. The principal and all staff knows each child by name. The school offers after school care, sports, among other programs, both education and just for enjoyment, and has a active Parent's Group. Their Motto, 'Big enough to Challenge, Small enough to Care' surely fits this school. I would like to thank everyone at LSF & B for bringing out the best in my children and giving them the encouragement and confidence they need to go out into the world!
As a current staff member I can appreciate the difficulties associated with choosing an all inclusive school for ones child. Unfortunately, each school has its strengths and weaknesses and to say that LSFB is void of such faults would be na ve. But within LSFB s weaknesses, lie its most virtuous strengths. The LSFB staff, teaches within the Christian spirit, promotes understanding, and emphasizes the importance of caring. Whilst the school structure might not be the most modern one, the teaching within the building is held to the highest standards. We at LSFB, have been taking significant steps in continuing to enrich our curriculum which, whilst is in keeping with NY state standards. We are currently upgrading our after school extra curricular programs hence offering students more academic options and parents their much needed flexibility. Choosing the right school for your child is essential to their academic, social, as well as spiritual development.
I'm very surprise of all negative things people are writing about this school. My daughter graduate last year. She attend there from K-8th. She always told me that if she didn't understand a class work the teacher will find the time to explain it until she get it. My daughter said she will always have good memories of that school. I had also volunteer there. I have seen how the teachers do care about the students. Everyone there is like a family. I have seem teachers worry about each students. All the teachers in that school want the best for each students. I know for a fact if I need to talk to the principal about anything he would always listen. I have to agree with a person who wrote that not all schools perfect. But I do know your child will feel love and safe.
Both my children attended the Lutheran School of Flushing & Bayside. We came from a New York City public school where the class sizes were getting out of control. I was looking for a school where the teacher-student ratio was more acceptable, which I found at the LSF&B. My children excelled academically and socially. If my son didn't understand something during class, the teacher took time to have lunch with my son and explain it more. Many times I would see the Principal talk with a stundent one on one to see how things are going. I felt that the small size of the school would provide my children with a good education in a safe environment. I also liked the religious aspect. While we are not Lutheran, the Christian teachings and attitudes of the school are obvious, and to our liking.
Coming from a Catholic school I tend to disagree with some remarks that have been made. At least here, the classes are small and the teacher can give some individual attention to the students. I was very impressed that when I asked for additional material so my child could practice. The teacher was more than happy to make me extra practice sheets. I have found that the teachers are very responsive to their students needs.
As a parent with a Daughter in this school I was shocked by the negative reviews of this school. My child has had a wonderful learning experience. The small class size makes it possible for all children to get special attention. Among the 8th grade graduating class this year many students will be attending prestigious high schools. The teachers are caring and the somewhat strict environment allows for no nonsense among students. There is a very active parents association and a real sense of community. The student body is wonderfully diverse allowing your child to interact with all cultures. The principal cares about each child and knows each one by name. I have never found the school to be anything but accepting of all families no matter what the makeup. There is no such thing as a perfect school but this one is
I have been involved with the school for the past 30 years. Both of my children attended the school and it was the best learning environment. Over the years the staff has had changes but the current staff is very dedicated to the schools mission of teaching children to grow academically and spirtually. My own children went on to a Lutheran High School and a Lutheran college and are both professionals in their field. I attribute this to their learning foundation at LSFB. As a staff member I've seen the children grow year after year gradudate to attend a variety of specialized high schools.
LSFB has been nothing but a nusense. The school is old, run down, flooded when it rains. The teachers are ancient and could care less about the students. The principal is horendous and should not even be in the position he is in and has done nothing for my child or myself. The tuition is outrageous for an education that is useless. SEND KIDS TO CATHOLIC GRAMMAR SCHOOL!
I am currently a senior in LSFB. During the few years I had hard times and good time however the science and the english teacher can shape up your kid. The science and the english teacher is very strict and will help you child for high school. LSFB is a great school to learn academic and discipline
If you expect your kid to get into a competitive science school, think again if your kid attends LSFB.
My daughter attended this school from k-3. The student body is small but this allowed for an personal one on one relationship with the kids. I feel this school created a wonderful social and academily sound enviornment. My daughter and I had a wonderful experience there. Teachers were caring but strict.
