All my children have gone to this school and I must say it has gone down the drain over the years the current principle is only concerned about getting funding for the school and is very very rude. The school is only concerned with testing testing and more testing my child has not learned anything it is just so sad this was such a great school before.
Too many kids...my kid is in 3rd grade and there are 31 children in the class. School staffs are helpful but I can't help questioning whether the major focus of the principal is to get a better school ratings or to provide a resourceful and respectful foundation for kids' true learning. I have to confess that I've seen some of the teachers not fully "there" for students or respond to their students without respect or raise voice constantly. I have to admit I decide to write this review since I have a strong doubt if I could recommend this school to anybody. not much enrichment classes nor extra activities and homework is mostly based on printouts throughout all years, not to mention there's not much art nor sports. It may have been good in the pat but definitely needs some improvements in... many areas.
I went to this school for 4 years. I was amazed by how the people, staff and parents work together as if they were one unit. I was treated nicely and the staff was so friendly and nice.
Its an awesome and good school and has lots of good people and a good environment
I think this is a good school however you have to be proactive. Also, the math program is very difficult and requires many parents to supplement the work the students get at school. For example, students learn complex math problems but haven't yet had the basics drilled into them. Many of the top students enroll in Mega Academy or Elite so they can compete for Hunter High School. My daughter was bullied - kids demanded her to pay money not to tell the teacher if she did anything bad. The school handled it when I sent a note however I made sure to call on another parent who also sent a note.
PS139 is a phenomenal school. Over the past 6 years, my son has been eager and excited about school and learning. This is a direct reflection of the school's nuturing environment and effective leadership.
The principal is incredibly bureaucratic and unflinchingly does whatever the DOE tells her. However, despite the principal's unwillingness to think for herself, the teachers remain terrific! They find a way to fill out the tons of required paperwork and keep the scores high while still connecting with the kids and bringing some fun into their lives. Thanks to its dedicated teaching staff (and no thanks to the DOE, its constantly changing mandates and its principal) PS 139 is still a great school.
My child could not have gone to a better school than PS 139. If there is a program that a child is interest in and this school does not have they PTA get it done with the Principal assistant. They have wonderful Enrichmond Program. They have a TAG (Talanted and Gifted) class which the students love. If I have a nother child this would be their school.
I graduated from this school and I have to say, it is not as wonderful as the reviews say it is. Some teachers have yelled extensively at their students and the food is horrible. The principle, Mrs. Chosed often does not support a student's side of the story. Many students are involved in fights with each other and smarter kids in the 'kappa' class are always being picked on by the other members of their grade.
i graduated from this school and its the best expecially for ms farmer my 6th grade teacher she is the best.
