the new principle has changed many things about the school like she added "owl dollars"most the things that you can get with these owl dollars is what 5 th grade would usually get with the old principle if she is going to have theses things it should only be for 4th grade and under and give those things to 5th grade they've been looking at the past 5th graders enjoying all these things for 5 years and they couldn't wait until they were in fifth grade to get these.

while the principal is new and seeks to involve parents and families on a greater level, the old staff is still the same and very selective in who they give their best service to. I am not impressed.

i use to go to this school.i now go to i.s383 a school for the gifted and talented. If u decide to send ur child there, trust me it is a great school.i had just graduate this school in 2012.My younger brother still goes to 71 and he still get a good score on his test. 1 thing i hope the school will change it that this school used to be a no uniform school. Kids in this school are still little, they do not wear inappropriate clothes. i think normal clothes are fine.

PS 71 now has a new Principal who is a force of positiveness, has a great love for the children (she calls them her children) and her number one goal not only for her students, but also for parents is have an excellent education! She's a ROCK STAR! In the short time she has been at PS 71, she has created an atmosphere of success and has brought up the school moral. We are proud that she is our students' leader. Our school will go from a great school to an outstanding school and we are ready for it!

The new prinicipal at PS 71 is friendly and open to speaking to the parents. She is an advocate for great education and has implemented workshops for the parents. She has also re-implemented celebrations for the kids (they need positive re-inforcement for the hard work they do after all). The parents are happy to see her face and know that she cares about the students and the school. She makes herself available to staff, parents and students. The teachers seem more at ease now then in previous years. The overall atmosphere is lighter and more energetic. It is my opinion that she will make PS 71 a Grade A+ school.

The new principal of PS 71 is very friendly. It's nice to see and know who the principal of the school is! The AP's are also very present. The Parent Coordinator is hard working and relates to the parents. She holds creative and educational workshops for the parents as well as enjoyable family night events every month. The teachers are very caring and work very hard to implement great learning skills and get our children college and career ready. They work well with the parents and make me feel that my children are in good hands. I look forward to the school grade going up and keeping it's great status. Way to go PS 71 staff and teachers!!!

They are very effective and care about the students success. The security agent works diligently to keep the school safe and make the children feel at home. The Aides, Custodial & Lunch staff are the backbone of the school and really care about the students. The Parent Coordinator is the liaison between the staff and families. She holds educational and creative workshops for the parents. She also holds monthly enjoyable family night activities. The PA team and Office staff bring a feeling of warmth and welcome to the school. Being a staff member, student and parent at PS 71 is like being part of a big family. Everyone works together for the greater good. I am proud to have my children attend this school. Thank you PS 71!

I too would not recommend this school. I will be making an official complaint regarding the comments made by the teacher in class to my son that criticized and embarrassed him. I do not believe using belittling tactics is how a child should be taught or corrected. It's gotten to the point where my son does not want to raise his hand to ask a question. That is unacceptable! If you call the office, you'll wind up "leaving a message" because the principal is NEVER available - they will try to pawn you off to the asst principal who is clueless. When you leave a message don't expect a quick turnaround on a call back. It took 2 weeks to get a return call. After that I learned you literally have to go to the office to make a formal complaint in writing otherwise it will not be taken seriously or be handled as a priority. And aren't our kids a priority for us! Ms Jackie is the only employee at PS 71 who has been helpful. The one positive thing about the school is it's kept clean...but you know what they say "nice on the outside rotten on the inside"! Just remember to stay on top of things and always go to the office to put your issue writing.

This school is horrible my son has autism and attended block institiue before all the way in Coney Island and never came back crying or with bruises of any sort and he does not like going to school he literally throws himself on the floor screaming to go home I believe my child is being bullied in school and not being watched and I also don't like the fact that when my son is on the floor they try to push me out saying mommy you have to go .. Lord help me because I will hurt anyone who messes with my child they have to call a male to bring him up I do not trust this school at all his things go missing and no one knows were they are seriously who's watching my kid this school should be closed I even payed for his picture day and somehow my son is the only one without his pictures so if my son attended picture day and everyone has there's where the f#%^* was my son while the pictures were taken ??? This school is bait for lawsuits .

This school is awful!!!!! Do not send your child there! Teachers doesn't care about children education at all. They are just sitting there until end of the school day. Kids that need attention are left behind, it's like the rule: if you are slow, so be slower. Instead cutting wings for inteligent kids, they should help them fly, right? This is teachers are there for!!! To teach, not to just spend time there. This is what my taxes are going for???? There is not enough after school programs. There is one: recycling! How to sort garbage in school caffeteria and the funniest thing is that there is a selection for the right students to be allowed to learn about recycling!!! Really???? Is that the best school can do? How about extra math, extra music, extra art. Define kids skills, they love to paint, sing, act, read. Kids talents are wasted there, unless you are have extra money to pay for private lessons. What is school? To teach, to expand knowledge. PS71Q does not do that! Anyway this schools sucks! It should be closed. I wish to have more characters remaining to write more about it. If you love your child- avoid this school!Parents who agree, write about it!We have to change it now

This school has inadequate learning material for children and staff doesn t seem to care nor recommend alternatives to children that either has a learning disability or needs to work on a particular subject. First off, the teachers don't do a great job of informing/communicating parents of what to work on as far as subjects go. Secondly, there is a lot of bullying that takes place both in the class room and around the building and you have the staff saying they were not aware of the situation that went on. I don t know how bullying is not seen in a classroom by a teacher. I have transferred my son to another great school with a higher community rating. While here, the school/teacher never informed me that my child had a problem that I had to pay close attention to. I don't know why this school is open, but if this is your child's zone school, I recommend relocating to another school that has top quality material or private school. The behavior and responses that parent's receive are not acceptable. And another close observation that I have made as well, this school continues a 5 in rating. If you care about the education of your child, I highly advise not to send your child here.

kindegarden: very bad school, teachers dont watch kids properly. teachers doze off and covers her face with a paper, security guard is found asleep. children go to restroom with other students alone and return back alone. we dont know if there can be a janitor or someone in the restroom in there. my daughters food is taken away by another student so it means the caretakers arent keepin an eye. my chid has been hit in shin and bruised badly by other students. who is watching my child.?

The teachers are excellent. They are very caring & try to be as creative as possible with the restraints put on them by the board of education & the administration at the school. The administration is not organized & they do not put parent involvement on the top of their list of priorites. The children need art, music, & computers in every grade. They need gym on a daily basis. Town Hall is pointless & a waste of valuable time. The children could be having gym during this time. The PTA does not do enough as far as involving families and raising funds for the children. They finally have playgrounds in both yards but the lunch aides do not allow the children to run and play freely, and they aren't allowed to talk during lunch. Where is the release for the children??

My daughter completed kindergarten at PS 71. I was very disappointed in their curriculum. They didn t seem to challenge the children enough. My daughter would bring home 1 or 2 sheets of H.W. and would be done in 5 min. They don't even have a reward system that acknowledges the kids.

I intended PS. 71 three years ago and I loved that school. The teachers care about your education and PS 71 has many activities to do especially in 5th grade. I love the t-shirts they give of the 5th grade and the monthly trips they take. I love the dodgeball game miss.minnie plays and hope the school stands on forever.

My twins both attend PS 71 and I aboslutely love the communication that I have with their teachers. Ms. Napoli is a great VP and Ms Olivelli really cares about all 'her' kids and it shows with the way she interacts with her staff and the parents. Thank You, PS 71!.

My children both attend P.S. 71 and I am very pleased with their progress. The teachers are kind and caring as well as very good at teaching! I love the music, art and computer programs and learning for life. The issues I have are that there is no gym, and not enough outdoor time. There are also no sports for after school. I would say it is one of the better schools in the area.

My daughter graduated from PS71 2 years ago, my son is there now in kindergarten. I regret that the school only goes up to 5th grade, would've loved to have them there through 12th grade. My daughter's teachers were wonderful. Ms. Canepa is a great guidance counselor too. As a full time employee, I've always appreciated the teachers' willingness to accommodate my request to go on class trips, and we also enjoy family nights. Through the years, Principals Griffiths and Olivella have made arrangements for children to participate in music recitals, my daughter had a few of them and my son recently had a keyboard recital. PS71 is definitely a great school.

I think this school is the best. It's such a great school and has helped me grow immensely. I used to attend this school and just recently raduated. My favorite teachers were Ms. Stehle, Mrs. Murphy, Ms. Levine, and Ms.Zambelli. It rocks. Thank you to all the teachers and Mr. Griffiths the principal (in 04-05 school year). I met most of my best friends there. I love this school to death.

My son has successfully completed 5th grade at 71. He has graduated with awards and is exceeding reading level. This school is by far one of the best schools I have had my children in. I highly recommend this schoo. While teachers do excellent work it is also up to us the parents to continue the teachings at home.
