If you want a quality education for your son in a safe, nurturing environment – UPREP is NOT for you. If you are generally disengaged, and looking for somewhere to park a child with serious behavioral issues for several hours a day – UPREP is the PERFECT school for you. The apathetic leadership is banking on you being the kind of parent who doesn’t care about your child’s education. They don’t even have a parent group, that’s how much they value the thoughts and opinions of their parents. Parents who wish to be a partner in their child’s education and be a part of a school community need not even apply. If ever you visit this school, the super charming President will sell you all sorts of dreams about what this school is like, and the educational benefits of sending your son to UPREP. These claims will be about 80% false. He won’t give you a REAL tour of the building while classes are in session, because he doesn’t want you to know this school is essentially a modern kiddie prison. UPREP likely has the highest rate of teacher and administrator turnover of any charter school in the county. I wonder if teacher prospects are being sold the same bill of goods as prospective parents? I digress… Theft and bullying are rampant in this school. Parents who are concerned for the education and general welfare of their children are placated, and made promises by school leadership that will never be kept. One or two of the teachers you encounter will be amazing, and make you want to stay. The rest will avoid you and ignore any request you make of them, because they are too busy passing out their resumes and planning an exit strategy. You will show up to school events and be one of only a handful of parents who cared to attend. You will hear about their amazing basketball team, and want to support their home games. You will soon find out that there won’t be any, because the nice new gym they built for their boys doesn’t have any bleachers! You will find yourself wondering how you ever believed the hype about UPREP. You will eventually give up, and find another school for your son. Along the way, you will encounter MANY people with stories about others just like you. You will wonder why no one ever posted an honest, thorough review of this school. Hopefully, you will sit down and write one like I just did. You’re welcome.
Great school and an amazing staff that really give their all to the students. Basketball team made it to the state championships in their first year having basketball team. First urban lacrosse team to play in the Rochester area in 20 years. Academically, the teachers support our students tremendously and provide a safe environment for them to excel. Although still growing and working out small kinks, what this school has accomplished in just 2 1/2 years of operation is amazing. Highly recommend it or at least go and check it out.
My son has been here for the first year of operation, while the school is not perfect it is without a doubt better than the previous school he attended. I like the fact that the homerooms are small and that the homeroom teacher will follow my son through all his years. Communication has been a problem and I am hoping to see that improve during the second year.
