My husband and I went to this school as kids, and were fortunate enough to have our daughter attend here as well. We absolutely love the school and district. The teachers are wonderful and fully involved with the kids. We had many resources for differently-abled kids. Our daughter read and wrote ahead of others in her class, and the teachers and admin staff worked one-on-one with us and with our daughter to create a learning plan that was engaging. They have so much technology for the kids to get hands-on with. There are many projects for the kids to do which encourages their creativity and independence! Our daughter loved going to school each day, we couldn't be more excited for our other children to start there.

Wow! The previous poster just completely demonstrated the arrogance and ignorance regarding special needs that plague this school. Way to go. You are taking in too many illegal substances if YOU can honestly say with a straight face that all the kids needing special ed only require it because their parents use illegal substances. FYI...the other elementary schools in Sayville....for example Lincoln, have much better classes for kids with needs. Most who attended Sunrise have moved, are moving or their kids are being shipped to Bayport, Center Moriches and other places. The principal at Sunrise does not foster a conducive environment for kids with needs. The other Sayville schools are a different story.

Let me address anyone who complains about the special needs classes... if you would just stay away from the illegal substances than you wouldn't need to put your child in those classes. This goes out to the too much homework from the teachers section as well... don't have kids if you can't help educate them. Just giving them a key and a remote control does nothing in further educating your child. Stop complaining about minor things and start turning this back into a great community.

My children attended this school from 1997 to 2008. From 1997 to 2001 the school was great, then the principle changed & it became a nightmare. She is still there

Sayville Schools are excellent. The teachers tend give out too much homework. Teachers often forget that parents are the ones that suffer from all the homework. Give us a break and enough with the Science projects. All it is is homework for parents. Otherwise, the schools are very good and safe.

I have 4 kids that attended &/or attend Sunrise The entire staff is just wonderful. They really care about your child as if it was their own. The teachers are the greatest! They are also excellant for any special needs children.

In general, I feel that the school is excellent. It is a shame that the teachers must spend so much time teaching for the standardized testing that New York State requires, because it stiffles the teachers' creativity and the students may miss out on that small window of opportunity to be inspired and/or motivated. The principal is not a huge people person, but is effective and fair when dealing with student-student, parent-teacher, and student-teacher conflicts. Chorus, Orchestra, and Band are offered and the music and art departments throughout the Sayville School District are excellent. Gym classes have some homework activities, such as activity journals.
