This little school is like a private school disguised as a public school. A lot has changed since the review from 2005. The elementary school has implemented a full balanced literacy program and the school has a 6-12 tablet computer program, in which every child in grades 6-12 gets a laptop free of charge. The faculty is tech savvy, knowledgable, caring and gives students personalized attention. Classes are small...some as small as 3 or 4 students! Students have amazing extra-curriculars like a week-long schooner trip and other environmental programs, as well as many trips into New York city for art and culture. We think the school is terrific.

The Shelter Island Middle school leaves a lot to be desired. They have forgotten that they are there to make sure the kids learn. They have forgotten that kids respond better to positive rather than negative. Most of the teachers have forgotten to care about the students and care that the kids learn what they are being taught. If you don't understand the material the first time it was taught you are pretty much out of luck. This could be a great school but they have to remember to care.
