A terrific school that encourages excellence but values each child's contribution. Wonderful school community - kids, teachers, parents. Great environment for my kids.

We recently moved to South Salem, and we could not be happier with this school & charming town! LES has been a such a warm welcoming environment, and many thoughtful efforts were made for a seamless transition for our child. I am continually impressed by the high level of professionalism in the staff, trickling down from the top. Principal Cristy Harris possesses a wonderful blend of intelligence, grace & competence that enables a feeling of comfort in knowing this is who is steering the ship. The teachers have been top notch, and the special assistance programs offered seem like private tutoring. Their are so many great activities to join, after school to weekend fun in the town park. Each child participates in growing the vegetables for the yearly Harvest soup, which the whole school gets to make & enjoy come September. They compost in the lunch room as well, and are taught Sustainability on a weekly basis. Our child loves the morning "Lews News", produced by the fifth grade & broadcast on Smartboards in each class room. Our child is so happy here- a definite top notch academic & enriched social environment. I feel as if my "whole child" is considered each day.

We toured this school last year and were so impressed, we selected this neighborhood for our daughter to attend school. The perfect balance of academics and social interaction, with a highly knowledgeable and friendly faculty and staff. Would highly recommend it.

This school grades much better in leadership and safety. The quality of teaching as well as the teachers can not be compared. The principal runs a fair and well organized school. If you have an option send your child to LS.

About the tests

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, the New York State Department of Instruction implemented new assessments designed to be aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The new standards for proficiency in these subjects are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change. See this letter from New York's Commissioner of Education for more information on these changes.

In 2013-2014 New York used the New York State Assessments to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English language arts and math, and in grades 4 and 8 in Science. At present 2013-14 results are available only for English language arts and math. The tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of New York. The goal is for 90% of students to meet or exceed grade-level standards on the tests.
