Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

My student likes the school. The early morning program is fantastic. I remain unimpressed with the level of communication from the school. Last year, my student's teachers did not use the website or the on-line tools to facilitate information sharing with Parents. This year is slightly better but it is not mandated by School Leadership. The website is is not updated frequently (calendar is often blank).

IS 61 has many dedicated teachers- who have been part of this neighborhood school for a long time. The Music, vocal, dance, and drama programs are great and and service ALL kids you participate. Art could be better. My child is a Vocal student and the program is quite sophisticated. The new principal has put into place logical organizational changes that have helped the kids. Unfortunately the school has cut : foreign language- and this will impact college readiness! BUt this is true of high schools too! You must take a regents, and have multiple years of languages to get into a better college.

I am going into the 8th grade at this school and it is horrible! The school is located in the ghetto and their are street fights almost everyday leading up to the police coming. If ur child is strong, their get through it here but their is many peer pressure. I know many peopl )almost 60% of the school smokes and drinks or has tried it. It is definitely not a good school! I am loooking forward to leaving

I now have 2 children attending I.S. 61.I was not zoned for this school I had my children apply after I investigated and compared I.S. 61 to the other schools available to them. I was impressed with the independent curriculum, the academies variety and consistency throughout each course. The eChalk access to homework and messaging between teacher, student and parent is a wonderful communication tool. I am pleased with some teachers but a few of course could use a reality check and a blowtorch under their b*$@.But I always have caring, personal, and genuine communications with most of the faculty, especially their Vice Principal. As for the student's environment and society, a child can fall prey to a negative element even in the most luxurious of institutions. We as parents need to remember our child's behavior and decision making ability falls on us. How they behave away from us and whom they choose to mingle with is taught at home. As for homework, projects and exams, each course has extensive at home and independent work, we as parents need to be aware of their online assignments and keep track of project deadlines. Our children's education and independent growth are in good hands

My sons started IS61 this year and we have had a great experience. We have heard of some situations but nothing causing physical injury. The teachers administer discipline. They allow parents to monitor the classes. We feel welcome when visiting the school. The PTA appears a little lacking. I believe there could be more involvement. My sons are doing quite well and are in honors classes. I believe the public school education they are receiving is excellent. The amount of homework a student brings home isn't an indication of the level of eduction they are receiving.

The terrible school... We transferred to IS61 from Catholic School 4 mns ago, it was big mistake. The differences between Catholic school my son attended & this school are: - much lower level of education. There is almost not homework at IS61. The light exception only math. - very low culture of IS61 students. Take a look how they behave during the breaks. It's like zoooo... The IS61 management does not keep discipline there. Your child will not study good things from this surrounding; - we had larcenies there. somebody stole his back pack before Christmas. There are 2 surveillance cameras there but their resolution is too low, impossible to distinguish something. - only one good thing at IS61: free music lessons. We didn't have it at Cath. Sch. IS61 makes concerts for parents. It's great to see your kid playing music on the scene. Thank you IS61 for that. I think the rating 4 is too high for this school. Only because music lessons it deserves 2.5. Sorry for the critic, I tried to be objective .

I am a sixth grader here at I.S61 and i just love it here. There are so many extra curricular activities like the leaders club in which I am in. All my teachers (Mrs. Marabello, Mrs. Contrastano, Mrs. Legakis, Mrs. Simeone, Mr. Herron & Ms DeCaro) are nice and always put humor in every lesson. I am in journalism and photo journalism because we alternate every day. This helps me experience more. I'm glad that I will be here for the next 3 years because I know it's going to be amzaing with the great techers, staff, classmates, and my friends

I feel I.S 61 is a great school because they really have a lot programs and opportunities for the students. My child is in a special Ed class but since she has been here, her knowledge, attention span, her endurance, and scores are increasing. The faculty including all teachers, principals, secreatries, and everyone are very helpful and you can tell they care for these students safety, and care about these kids obtaining proper education. They treat them like if they were one of their own. I went to this school so did my siblings, my parents etc... I had the best time of my life and also learned so much in middle school. So I would definitely choose William A Morris Intermediate School. Keep up the good work! Thank you!

I am a 2009 graduate here at 61 and Im so upset to leave. This school has brought me the best memories of my life and friends I never want to lose. The teachers here are amazing (Mrs.Arbus-I never stopped laughing during her class. It was too much fun.(She's an 8th grade english teacher and a 7th grade creative writing teacher)) and the A.P's (Mr.LaMorte) are the best . Over the past 3 years I have never once doubted why i came to this school and never once stopped laughing. I love 61 with all my heart and best of luck to all of the 2009 graduates in High School! ~Christine

My child will graduate from this school in June and I wanted everyone to know that it has been a fantastic experience. The teachers are wonderful and so is the office staff. I was a little nervous because of the size of the school but we have not had one negative thing we could say about the 3 years. I know alot of the 8th graders are going on to private schools with scholarships and also alot were accepted to specialized schools. If you have any reservations I would say do not believe every thing you read (in the newspaper)) and give this school a chance. As we all know only the bad news makes the papers, maybe someone should ask the advance to do an article on all the positive things that go on

This school is amazing. All of the teachers help as much as they can whenever possible. I myself as a Drama major/Honor Student have learned so much from Ms. Mcnally, Miss Zee and all of my other teachers. Mr. LaMorte is always such a great assistant principle; if you need anything just ask him and he will deal with it. This school is the best school I have ever went to. As a seventh grader myself i reccomend this school to students who want to strive for bigger and better things: 'Power, Prestige, and Money' -The Wiz '09 -

I'm asixth grade student here and I'm majoring in journalism. If you have a problem in the school, any teacher, dean, vice principal, or guidence counselor can help sort it out. If you don't want your child to go there, think again. There are so many magnet choices to choose from. There's dance, journalism, art, drama, band, strings, chorus, and more. Journalism is what I major in. I love journalism so much now that I want to get a degree in journalism and become a television reporter broadcasting the news on ABC, just like Diane Sawyer. I love IS 61! If I were to rate IS 61 on a scale of 1 to 10. I pick 999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999 billion! Go 61!

This school, my daughter has been going to she likes and is enjoying. When I need a problem resolved such as she needed a bus pass it was resolved within an hour. The teachers respond when you need them. Some of the teachers have websites where the homeworks can be found. The faculty is very nice and understanding and they know the children- even the security guards pretty much know the students by names which is a pleasure. There are people within the school for the children to speak to if they need and they help out a lot.

When I first came to this school, I was shy and the quiet kid that always is doing good and gets high grades. Im still that but Im not shy anymore and I just got accepted into the group of kids and teachers. The manget program is also great. I am a 8th Grade Drama Major annd its so cool. Yes, there is some problems here and there. I never got in any trouble or fights :) So, I would recommend this school for kids to go to.

As an eighth grader now i must say that its been an awesome ride. i'm excited to graduate but once again dont want too because of all the love and care this school has to offer. Lets put aside the behavior and talk about academics i myself have a 98 average and am sure may others strive as high as i do. I am a student at I.S.61 and I'm loving every second of it. I love the magnet program. I love the way you are withthe same kids all day. It ties us all into a knot, where support and advice is always available. I love all my teahcers, although some have horrible ways of teaching. The magnet proram as well as the out of program kids are always trying to spruce up the place that seemed so daunting on the first day of school, painting lockers and hallway art with beautiful masterpieces that I could expect from aproffesional. Other majors but on wonderful shows, and the spring musical is always a blast. With every school comes fights, especially in the cafeteria, and I fell they are handled in the quickest and smarteest way possible. I f you don't crowd aorund like many children try to do, you will be fine.

I.S 61 has been a disaster from the beginning without even a letter sent to parents to let us know where to go on the first day of school. While the magnet program is great, there is absolutely no support or communication between teachers and parents. I often found out about important information and tests after they had already passed. I am taking my son out because of his terrible experience there. Every day there are fights in the lunch room and while there are some excellent teachers, they are overtaxed and overwhelmed getting little to no support. We are counting the days to leave what has been an abysmal year.

I am a 6th grade student at I.S.61 and i think this school is wonderful. I was coustume crew in the production of beauty and the beast and the kids preformed awesomely! It wasn't your average middle school play it was like you were seeing a broadway show. The teachers have all been so nice and hardworking. Ms.Zee Ms. Mcnally and Mr.Mannarino are maybe the hardest working teachers i've ever seen. I'm in the drama magnet program and i think that the magnet program was a great idea. This is my son's second year at IS61. So far the only problem I have had was last year when my son wsa bullied by another student. Once I found out,I went up to the school the following day and the dean was very professional and helpful and the problem was resolved that same day. He has not had any problems since then and the funny thing is that he has become good friends with the student who was bullying him. My son is in the magnet program and academically he is an honor roll student and has excelled in IS61. I just wish the other children would be taught manners and respect at home. Some are too wild and disrespectful. As long as your child is focused he/she will succeed and receive a quality education at IS61.

I graduated IS61 in 2005. Those 3 years in 61 was definitely the best so far. I was in the Drama program, Mrs. Zerega was wonderful. I was in the Plays each year and I never wanted to leave! IS61 gave me the tools I needed to go into high school. I made it in Curtis High Schools Nursing Program. I couldn't have been happier. I Miss Staten Island so much! But for all the students/parents that are so,so about going to IS61...the best I can say is not to be scared. Try to get yourself in a program and enjoy those 3 years because they go by fast! best of luck -Chelsea

This is my child's second year at IS 61 and he is having a very positive experience. He has been very lucky with the selection of teachers that he has, they make the work very interesting for him. He is a well rounded child and enjoys the diversity of the school very much. I have never had a problem getting feed back from any of his teahers. The only downside I see to his day is the lunchroom and while he seems to be able to eat his lunch in what seems to be a very crazy enviorment and not worry I as Mom of course do. Maybe parents should start working on teaching their children how to behave in public and teach them some manners then the teachers could consentrate on teaching. Keep up the good work.

Well first of all -- this is my second round through 61 -- I have a child who graduated top honors and got into a fabulous high school -- most of the teachers have email and/or websites at this point and hand out their contact information in the beginning of the year when the student/teacher code of conduct and rubrics are handed out to be signed -- and encourage you to use that to communicate -- I have always had my questions answered -- although no school is perfect - the honours and magnet classes are exemplary--and in response to the parent who says there is no make up work when you are absent -- well we never experienced that--and many classes have an official 'scribe' and notes and work do have to be made up as well as tests and projects-we are very happy with this school.

IS 61 has a great team of talented, outstanding educators. Unfortunately, their leadership is lacking and confused. Because of this, too often, students who are very gifted, but have diagnosed learning disabilities, lose out in the growth potential the school provides due to confusion with how to 'fit them in'. Not a great choice for creative students with learning disabilities who might also make it into the magnet. Too often, these students are marginalized. If you are up for the battle, then it is a good school, but real hard work for parents of students with special needs.

This is my daughter's first year at 61 and so far it has been very successful for her. She comes from a parochial background and the change for her was pretty good. I did expect, however that there would be more teacher-parent contact. Even though my daughter is doing extremely well, I miss the interaction I had with the teachers at parochial school. All in all, the school is wonderful.

The quality of academic programs is great. This year the school has started a new program where there are academies and all kids are involved with recycling, and other community activities. My daughter loves attending this school. The music program is excellent and she has learned so much in such a short time. The level of parent involvement needs improvement. Sometimes parents feel that because their kids are in intermediate school, they no longer have to supervise, but that's when you need to supervise the most. Overall I am extremely happy with this school.

When my daughter entered 61 in 2004; she encountered a serious bullying issue with a large group of girls in her own class. I alerted the grade supervisor who took care of the problem immediately and with great wisdom. The solution has proved permanent and peaceful. The quality of the magnet program is astounding due to the teachers' dedication and expertise. The other academics vary, as is to be expected, but many of the teachers are quite impressive. Safety concerns, particularly those involved with arrival and dismissal seem carefully handled. The administrators are very vigilant and visible outside of the school at those times. In general, the conflicts and negative aspects of this school tend to mirror real life in general, so unless your a child is especially sensitive, the experience of a IS 61 education can be academically, creatively and socially fruitful.
