Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

The school teachers at this school are awful. They don't know how to relate to children. If a kid that has a bit of difficulty or gets distracted for a second in their classes they recommend or imply that something is wrong with your child. My child is in a gifted and talented school now. If it would of been up to the inept teachers of PS1 their laziness and stupidity my child would be in a especial ed class instead. Do not send your child to this school. The worse school ever!!!

The parents are very much involved in day to day activity. The PTA is constantly motivating everyone in school and in our neighborhood to be involved with educating our kids inside and outside of school.

Small classroom sizes, dedicated teachers who work with parents. Strong PTA and a principal who is in touch with the students and strives to do the best for PS 1 year after year.

What I love about P.S. 1 is personal touch the teachers give to the children. When my children come home from school I asked them in detail about their day at school. I like what I hear. From listening to my children I know the teachers at P.S. 1 really care about their students.

P.S. 1 is a wonderful, small school with highly skilled teachers and great support staff. It is a real community school, everything is done for the children. I feel good knowing my children are happy and thriving in such a nurturing environment.

I love PS 1 because I have 3 nieces that attend PS 1 and they are doing so well academically and it is because of the education and care they are receiving from PS 1. At the end of summer they are not upset that school is beginning, they can not wait to start. Thank you PS 1

PS1 is more than a school - it is a nurturing community of competent and compassionate professionals who exceed at their vocations every single day. The entire staff and PTA of the Tottenville school are extremely dedicated to the education and general well-being of the students. The school has a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation among the staff, students and parents. I feel very fortunate that my daughters belong to the PS1 family. Together we learn, together we grow....

I love that parents and teachers seem to really care about the school, it's education ratings, and how it affects its students.

It's a small school where all the teachers and faculty know everyone. My three children went there and had a wonderful experience and did very well education wise. That's why I'm voting for P.S.1

One of the better schools on SI. My fourth child is going to pre-school there. I wish I could be more involved to help out.

I have two children currently attending PS1, and had two other children graduate from PS1. I have always been happy with the school and it has gotton better and better. My kids are happy to go every day. My daughter is in first grade and she is enthusiastic about learning and attending school. Everyone knows my childrens names and takes a personal interest in them , from the security guard, school aids, parent coodinator, teachers to the principal. They always answer my calls and questions kindly and patiently. Scholastically my daughter is doing wonderfully and I couldn't be more pleased with her progress. My son is in preK and goes happily every day. By the way, I see the PTA moms there every morning. They have tons of fun activities, events, fundraisers for the kids, construction and all.....they are far from useless. I am very happy with PS1.

Many issues at this school, construction on the building, huge class sizes, no gym for fairs or recreation for the children. To top it off the PTA is useless.

my children went to PS 1 in 2008, we have since moved. They loved the school. My son had a Kindergarten experience of old, he played and had fun. He did not learn to read, but lets' face it, he will eventually. My kids would love to go back, but we are 1,000 miles away. The teachers were not only kind & caring, but most were part of our community. You saw them at restaurants, church, etc.... So they did not treat the kids like non-beings. Thank you ps 1, I wish I had your social skills here in Florida. also, the parents were great and involved.

I'm not sure what some people are talking about. My child is a special needs child and Mrs. Gordin is wonderful with him. I think ssome children are just not best served in certain schools. Some school shave programs that better fit a child with certain needs. She is always helpful and sweet.

Mrs. Gordin has been the demise of PS 1. She's dismissive, will do anything to remove children with special needs from the school and is uncooperative at best. She speaks with absolute authority whether or not she knows what she's talking about. This used to be a friendly, high achieving, 'small town feel' school that has become adversarial. Quite often it's constant conflict between the parents and the administration.

I am very dissapointed with this school, so much so that I took my children out. Many other parents I know feel the same way, and wish to take their child/children out, but cant. Mainly because the only two options are: private school or transfering to another school which is very difficult to get approved. The new Principle, Mrs. Gordin, has completely divided the staff and parents. You either love her or hate her, and unfortunatly most don't love her. There are alot of children struggling in reading and math. Too many! If someone is thinking of putting their child in this school, please reconcider. The Fundations curriculum is not the best. This curriculum does not introduce all 54 phonograms, and their rules. My children are doing so much better in reading do to a new school with a phonitic based curriculum.

At a recent PTA meeting, parents were informed about the aging nature of the building and how many classes are unsafe because of a weak floor. The principal was not very responsive to parent concerns and I understand there is a growing unease concerning her leadership. Recent budget cuts have hurt many positive enrichment programs and our children are left with test prep, certainly not a well rounded education we all wish for our children.

The Educational staff at P.S. 1 is of exceptional quality. I know this firsthand because my daughter who is currently in Kindergarten has severe food allergies. The staff, students, and other parents show the utmost concern for her safety, and well being. My Family is most appreciative for the extra special attention and outstanding education that our child is given. Our wonderful Principal Mrs. Rosenberg, is a well educated person. However, Education is not her only asset, she has common sense and shows true concern and involvement with all the students. Other staff members, teachers, security, and custodians only add to the value of P.S. 1.. The academic programs surpass their expectations. I hope anyone who is considering sending their children to P.S. 1 will do so with great confidence, that they will receive an outstanding educational experience.
