PS 45 is a wonderful school with dedicated teachers, caring administration and great parent involvement. Every school has issues, it's not perfect. But the good far outweighs the bad. The principal had the foresight to bring the school into alignment with the common core from her first day. While test prep still went on, our teachers and our students were prepared with the right materials to make the job easier on everyone. They host multiple events every year for the pure enjoyment of the students. Teachers are involved and make great relationships with parents. The band is wonderful. The music program is great. The dance program is great. New after school activities are always being offered. Successful partnerships with organizations like Marquis Studios and Sundog Theatre have brought theatre, culture, and overall enrichment to our children. Through collaborative hard work all the classrooms are air-conditioned and have technology that is continually being upgraded. The kids love the school. I've been a parent there for 7 years and have 6 more ahead of me and there is no place I'd rather have my children right now. Our community is diverse and I think that is a great thing.

My youngest son is at PS 45 in the third grade. He is happy, engaged and involved in all of his classes, after school activities and extracurricular activities.

I had an amazing teacher in the 4th and the 5th grade, I remember it was the first year they did the "loop" thing where we can choose to have the same teacher. However, one thing that outshines the rest in this school was my horrible experience in kindergarten. I had absolutely the most horrid teacher that enjoyed bullying me because I was that "quiet kid". She had her favorites and would often publicly compare the rest of the students to two of her favorite students. She would accuse me of doing something I didn't do without asking me for my side of the story. I will always and forever remember this incompetent and overall horrible kindergarten teacher. It has been a long time and she is, thankfully, long gone from the school. Other than that, this is a pretty decent school and I'll regard most of my other teachers positively.

All I can say is my children love the school.....and their opinions are the ones that count. They have had a positive experience with many extra curricular activity opportunities.

My oldest daughter who started in she has had wonderful teachers and great experiences. My other daughter who started in2009 and is in a CTT has not had the same experiences. The teachers and thearpists are not cooperative with you in the success of your child's best learning interests. THe staff is not into listening to your opinion or your thoughts for your child. They have their mind made up , what they say is best. You can talk to them till your blue in the face . You have to go over everyones heads to get anything done. It is ashame because the kids do enjoy the activites and the parent involvement is good. They recently got a dance program which the children all love. The music program is also very well liked, however a chorus and other activites would be nice but are never allowed for our school. Can not wait till my children graduate ....

In 2004 this school was a great place for my son to begin kindergarten, with active teachers who tried their best in spite of overcrowding. 3rd grade CTT was especially promising with high funding, modern equipment & teachers who worked very well together. By 5th I couldn't wait for him to leave; classes were chaotic, free period supervision was draconian because the kids were so poorly controlled (many days the children just sat on the ground until the bell rang), and teacher turnover was ridiculous, with his class going through four teachers in that one year. That year half the class was made to sit on the hallway floor during exams while disadvantaged children received extra help to finish (to which they are entitled - but why is my kid left to do nothing for an hour in the meantime?). The final insult, his 5th grade teachers failed to tell his new school he was in band (the one big bright spot), and 6th grade started with problems and schedule changes as a result. Administrative issues, obviously, or the problems wouldn't be so systemic. Such a sad turnaround in only 6 years!

What's happening in this school is a real shame. The teachers went from being positive and upbeat to miserable, overworked, and stressed. The new administrative staff micromanages the teachers - there are no obvious consequences for students who are disruptive and disrespectful. I'm told that these students get to play on iPads so that the situation can be "diffused" I feel very sorry for these teachers who work so hard every day despite everything that has been going on. Rumor has it many teachers are seeking other career options at different schools. Although they'll be missed, I wish them the best!

PS 45 is great! The new principal seems willing to take on some of the real issues and work collaboratively with the great group of teachers. The music program is wonderful and the kids are engaged. Some additional challenging academic programs and clubs would be icing on the cake!

The school is great. The staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgable. My son is now in 3rd grade and each year he had a very good teacher. The school encourages family involvement which I feel is very important. Communication between the families and the school is very good and they are open to new ideas.
