In my opinion the principal lacks leadership skills needed to address bullying I believe this principal is more interested in her cushy 6 figure salary than the emotional well being of children in her care. Administration is friends with parents on Facebook. If you have a disagreement with another parent, do you want the other parent friends with the assistant principal on Facebook.? After informing a popular mother I would not tolerate bullying my child was forced to endure cruel social isolation! This mother had the skills needed to fracture my child's other friendships and turn her into a social outcast. EVIL. teachers, parents, children participated in it. I fully believe it was condoned by the principal. She doesn't want to be responsible for complaints of bullying should your child suffer an adverse outcome. Her goal : to intimidate you into staying quiet. If you complain, beware, you'll be punished !! your child won't be chosen for the class play, won't be invited to parties, will be told to "go away" . I now understand why parents believe " don't complain, it will make it worse. " Protect your child. Get audiovisual evidence, submit it to the chancellor . So Sad .

PS 48 is an amazing school. My daughter has been attending it from Pre-K thru 5th grade. The principal Mrs. Mammolito is highly experienced and approachable. Teachers encourage children to work hard, and challenge them according to their abilities. This school enables kids to perform their best in academics. PS 48 has many programs that inspire kids to express themselves. Guggenheim museum art program, school band, theater, circus, ballroom dancing and girls heritage program Her-Story. There are a lot of extracurricular activities available at school. Newspaper, fencing, basketball, ballet, Zumba, you name it. In 2013, his year, PS 48 has become a PreK-8th grade school. It has been expanded and moved to a brand new state of the art building. The new school has an auditorium, library, laboratory, art and music classrooms and many other facilities that enhance the learning experience for our children. Overall, I give it a five stars out of five, because I could not have asked for more from an elementary school.

Fact: You can always build a bigger school somewhere else. Fact: The same curriculum is being taught all over the city. So, ask the majority of parents at PS48 and they'll all agree on one thing: it's the amazing principal, administration and teachers that make it such a great school. And for those who feel it's overcrowded; the problem is not that a class has some 30 kids! As long as rules are clearly set and followed, and the teacher knows how to handle the kids, then you can rest assured that they're all learning & having fun too!

My kids have only been in the school for a few weeks but I am pleasantly surprised by what a wonderful school we have found! It really is a diamond in a sea of blah on Staten Island. I have high hopes for my children in this school. I am still getting to know the staff and teachers but the parent coordinator is just wonderful and was one of my first points of contact at the school. She is always available for questions and is so involved. So far so good!! Can wait to see what comes next!!

I must admit my son was extremely nervous to start kindergarden but after the first two days the teacher made him feel very comfortable and now he doesnt want to miss a day. The teachers make everything fun. While they are playing they also are learning. He reads and writes on his own. Very proud of Ps48

I am very happy with the school but the school is too crowded. There seem to be kids who are not zoned for the school, but I have no clue how they ve been admitted there. There has to be some kind of verification that DOE can do. They should not let these things happen. A lot of favors go on. My son s class is crowded 30+ kids and I can bet most of them aren t zoned for the school. No other problems that I could see with the school. Teachers are great.

P.S. 48 is a victim of its own success. It is severely overcrowded and filled with out-of-zone scammers and Petrides' teachers' kids admitted out of professional courtesy. They really need to verify where people are living. It isn't fair to those of us for whom it is our actual zoned school. The school is full and turns away in-zone people. Other than that, seems okay, but should have more phonics and less emphasis on sight words in the early years. Also, one of the social workers working with the early grades is more than a bit over zealous.

PS 48 is a wonderful school for children to grow and learn. My child is excelling there and couldn't be happier. The teachers are wonderful and easy to talk to. Communication between faculty and parents is more than I could ask for. It is a very family oriented school and they have a lot of wonderful events. I'm so glad that my child is able to attend such a great school.

It is interesting to note that this school is indeed very good as all the reviews have indicated here and it does deserve the 10 rating. My son had many problems when he was attending pre-school that we were very concern if he can handle the "mainstream" school environment when he entered into kindergarten. However, as time progressed, the school (or teacher) magically turned my son around as he is now doing very well in the kindergarten class. I guess the school does a good job in making a challenging curriculum and entertaining as well. Its parent coordinator, Terry Guthrie, does an excellent job in entertaining the parents questions. The only problem I see with this school is the space which the school is addressing by building a larger new school in the near future. It would be nice if this new school can be built as a K-8 school instead of its existing K-5 school but I'm not sure that it shall happened.

We are educators in the private and public sectors. Neither of us can imagine another better place to bring our children every day. They feel physically and emotionally safe in this colorful building. Staff members on every level are warm, supportive and professional. There is a broad and balanced commitment to educating the whole child, character, academic, physical, civic and artistic. Every child is treated as a special individual. We feel included and valued as parents in the school community. What more is there?

The school staff and administration is amazing. I have had such a great experience having my son there and look forward to my daughter attending next year. The teachers and principal are the best. I also love the fact that parents are so involved and fight for special programs etc.

I love PS 48 because the people who work there are kind are real, they show affection to the children and parents of this fast growing community. This schools logo states that 'we're not just a school, we're a family', and they truly make it feel that way in every way. When I enter PS48 i know i will be greeted with the ever so friendly staff, I always feel welcomed and know that what ever questions or needs I have will be answered in the most respectable way. PS48 is a great school for families to experience a safe environment, a well rounded education for their children and the best learning experience any school can offer!!

My child is new to the school. I feel the principal is wonderful, however some of the teachers seem unapproachable. The biggest drawback is the overcrowding and lack of space for the children. There is no gymnasium or auditorium, only a very small 'use it for everything lunchroom'. The children are often stuck in their extremely small classroom all day.

PS 48 is a nice school. My son enjoys going to school everyday and I feel extremely comfortable dropping him off and knowing that he will be well cared for. The teachers are wonderful and caring! The PTA is EXCEPTIONAL! They are so dedicated to this school. They provide a huge positive impact to this school and it would not be the same without them! The afterschool programs and family nights are fun and educational. Of course there will be parents who are not happy with some aspect of the school, but you cant please everyone and no school is perfect. But I would say that this school is pretty great!!

I am always amazed to see all that goes on inside the walls of PS 48. One would think that the limitations of size and space would also put a limit on the extra curricular activities that take place in and around the school. PS 48, is not just a school, but truly a family. The principal knows everyone by name and her door is always open to the parents and children. She encourages everyone to be the best that they can be and always finds time for everyone who is part of the school to shine in their own special way.. The school is a gem of a school. a jewel, so shine on PS 48 and continue to be the STAR that you are!!!

I have been a parent in the school for several years now, and have been extremely happy with the education. It is a good balance of academics, art appreciation and social education. The handful of staff children does not make a school overcrowded; it is the excellent ratings, high test scores and the fabulous reputation that draws parents to this school. I believe it speaks volumes that the staff trusts the education here and the other staff members enough to expose their own children to this school. Due to the hard work of the staff and the PTA, they were able to get the City Council and DoE to approve building a new state of the art building across the street to alleviate the continuing growth of the school.

The teachers are highly qualified & strive to surpass the standards. They work beyond their mandated hours & make themselves available to help in any capacity. The Principal has a true love for the children, & brought vital, enriched & innovative learning experiences into the school. The programs offered are better than most private schools. The children receive a well rounded, balanced education. The support staff is wonderful; the Parent Coordinator, coaches & specialty teachers are the hardest working, most involved professionals. Everyone works together to make sure the children reach their fullest potential. The PTA finds new & creative ways to bring the school community together, & offer opportunities for involvement. It s a shame that the good could be tarnished by ignorance. This school is truly exceptional. Anyone who takes the time to find out what is really going on during the day would know that!

I am very fortunate that my children are part of the PS48 family. They are receiving a wonderful well-rounded education. I find the staff to be extremely approachable and I have never seen a more dedicated PTA. It is obvious that the children in the school come first. It is due to the principal that the school is rich in the arts and although challenged with the physical constraints of the building, was able to bring in physical education as well. The school continues to receive high ratings and high test scores, which proves the staff and the principal are doing an amazing job. I am saddened by the negative reviews, I believe these parents are not fully aware of the wonderful things that take place at PS48.

Not only do my children attend P.S. 48, but I am a licensed teacher. I am impressed everyday by the amazing staff at this school. The school offers a wide variety of programs and opportunities for all students. They truly go above & beyond the call of duty. I drop my children off everyday knowing that they are in good hands and will be cared for. The school continues to achieve high scores and we are all looking forward to the expansion in 2013. Parents should consider themselves lucky to be a part of this amazing learning facility.

The prinicpal needs to stop taking smoke breaks and focus on what is not happening in her school. Anytime you drive by the school, the staff is out smoking...I would be fired for taking that many breaks. At the beginning of the school year, my child was supposed to have gym 2x per week, that changed after 1 month. Now it is 1x per week. The school is overcrowded because all of the staff bring their children there. The PTA is wonderful and committed to the school, but extremely clicky and do not let outsiders into their circle. The support staff are nasty and unhelpful. Most of the teachers are not approachable and dash out after dismissal. You cant even wave goodbye and they are gone. Teachers do not reply to notes or provide their contact information.

I must agree with the comment about the principal's ego. I don't think I'd like to be a staff member either. Under previous administrations they appeared closer and jollier. Gym is mandated for more than once a week though that is not the case here. Also all the woman thinks about isthe arts. With the push on nutrition how about something physical. Maybe then there would be less going on between the children with hands, pushing etc. Also maybe without variances and all the staff members children who are in attendance there would be more space.

I disagree completely! PS 48 has always been a warm & welcoming school. My three children have gone there and with previous principals. The staff is wonderful and always willing to help. The PTA work very hard for the school. The arts are extememly inportant for the studnts to strive academically. There was no gym before and now wilth Ms Frascati the students are moving. Granted there is NOT enough space but the PTA has been working on it for some time. My children are doing well because of PS 48. I applaud them.

This school has a SERIOUS lack of extra curricular activities. Sports/Team programs are ZERO. There is no basketball, cheer, drama or ANY other group activity that young children need . Most times, there isn't even regular gym as the gym is used as the cafeteria other functions. Sometimes there are programs like cooking, arts and such that run for an hour or so once a week for ONLY a month and a half. I would certainly rather have my young children in group/social programs than the Gugenheim abstract art and ballroom dancing. I think it is appalling that anyone can extoll the virtues of a school with no social or physical activities for students. The principal is very controlling, confrontational and puts her ego above the needs of the children. I'm sure I'd rather be a staff member than a child in PS 48.

P.S. 48 is truly a a remarkable place on every level. I have the good fortune of both being a staff member and proud parent of two children attending this school. I have been working in the nyc school system for almost twenty years and I have never seen a more dedicated principal or staff in all of those years. Everyday I go to work with a smile on my face, it is such a positive place to be.

My son graduated from PS 48 this year. It was a wonderful experience for both of us. The school is small in size and population yet is very diverse. My son was exposed to various experiences from Taiko drumming to ballroom dancing to academic honors coursework. The Parent Coordinator, Terry, is great as are many of the teachers, support staff, and Principal Mammolito. Overall it was everything one could ask for in a school and we are saddened to have to move on.

The ratio of student to teacher is misleading as it is much lower than the actual number of students in a class. When compiling the ratio pushin teachers, resource teachers etc. are counted though they do not have an official class. The teacher quality is exemplary but they need to be in the classroom more. All to often teachers are sent out for 'training' and this is detrimental to the education of the class. We all know no matter how good a substitute is the presentation and concentration is not the same as when the teacher is in the room.

PS 48 is an exceptional school. It is a small school and the principal and staff make it their business to know each and every child. The children of PS 48 are getting a great education, are happy and always feel at home there. There are wonderful enrichment programs (art, ballroom dancing, music, computer just to name a few), extracurricular and afterschool activities. Their creative work is always on display throughout the school. It has an open door policy and the staff is always accomodating to any requests. I am lucky to be part of the family at PS48.

PS 48 is a wonderful school. Since the new principal has been here she has reduced class size in the lower grades, reinstated the music program, and implemented art throughout the grades. There are numerous afterschool activities. The PTA works round the clock organizing fun and exciting events for the students during school and after school hours as well. I am able to go to work each day knowing my child is safe and cared for at PS 48.

I must say that PS 48 is a wonderful school with caring teachers and a loving principal. My children have been exposed to many of the Art programs at PS 48, such as the Guggenheim, now Margue studios and one of them will start band next year. We've had fun at many of their family nights such as dancing and craft nights. We've always have had food to eat and had a great experience. As for my daughters teachers they have learned so much. I do feel that they should have more spelling tests and more feedback on their essays but I truly believe my children are in good hands. In the Fall there was free after school activities such as fashion class and cooking to Science and many more. They are correct in saying that they are more than a school they are a family.

I am a parent at P.S.48 & if you are zoned for this school, consider yourself lucky! P.S. 48 is a wonderful enriched learning institution. Not only are the teachers amongst the best in the city, the Principal & Parent Coordinator are 2nd to none! We are fortunate to have a hard working administration, that promotes ongoing teacher training, to assure that our students receive the best possible education. I read 2 reviews that seemed to be inaccurate in describing our school. We have many after school activities, many PTA sponsored events, & an enriched arts program which includes Ballroom dancing, internships with the Guggenheim Museum, & Band, just to name a few! The Principal has been a wonderful addition to our 'family'. She is respectful, knowledgeable, & always willing to listen & help. She is always trying to find new, innovative, & effective teaching practices. P.S. 48 is just wonderful!

I agree about the principal. There is no way to approach her without her becoming confrontational and she vehemently denies any problem. I'm concerned that the ignored aggressive behaviors will continue to spread amongst the children and doubt I will allow my children to return to this school. Staff is consistent in playing down these incidences and communications with parents are severely lacking. There are no after school programs beside latchkey. No clubs, no sports, no chorus, art, drama, honors, nothing.

1st I will say there is NO gymnasium or auditorium. Lunchroom is suppose to convert to these but it is hardly ever done. So, there are no assemblies, play or such. If it is raining or snowing, no gym. Occasional gym in schoolyard, even in the severe cold of the winter. The current principle is rude, unhelpful and unreasonable. Fundraiser are constantly going on. Most of these monies go to principle/teacher equipment/dinners/supplies. But parents are constantly asked for supplies. Many parents left the school and I will be taking my child out by the end of the school year.

This school continues to be the best on the island, if not the state. My sister went to this school when she was a child and now my own children attend classes here. Same teachers here too. Their grades are wonderful, the teachers love their students and their work..as it shows. The teachers don't wait until parent teacher conferences to tell you that a child is having difficulty. They are on top of each and every child...to help them do their very best and to be their very best. I would never take my child out of this school. I've even put off moving out of state until my eldest finishes the 5th grade. There is plainly no better school around than this one.
