Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Excellent school! Feels like a family! All of the staff are very warm and friendly. As a parent I feel very welcome when I come into the school.. It makes communicating very easy. I have 2 children in this school. They are so happy here. It seems like the staff really takes the time to get to know the children's names and the children feel at home and look forward to going to school! The Principle is amazing. She really sets the tone of the school. You can tell that the teachers are very happy here and it trickles down to the students. Wonderful atmosphere, wonderful school!!!

I really like the school. Everyone is caring and nice and always lets you know when there is an issue with your child. I agree that they should have more gym classes during the week and actually do sports with them so that they are not overwhelmed when they get to junior high.

I love my sons new teacher. Her name is Ms. Watt in Pre-K. As a newcomer to this school, I am very satisfied with the communication, cleanliness, curriculum and activities held with the PTA. My son is very comfortable in her classroom and enjoys coming to school which is most important!

I couldn't be happier with this school. I feel like they are an extended family because the school environment is so caring and nurturing. The principal, Ms. Esposito and Vice Principal Mr. Reformato are truly amazing people. They are always around, whether I am dropping my daughter off in the morning or picking her up from Latchkey. Their incredible leadership extends to all the staff I have come in contact with. I consider myself truly lucky to have P.S. 53 be my kids' zoned school.

I love PS 53 because not only is it considered one of the best elementary schools on SI but it is a warm and nurturing school as well. They care about their students. The office staff wonderful and easy to talk to. They have an amazing parent coordinator who is approachable, kind and caring. She goes out of her way to make each event at PS 53 spectacular. I am a graduate of PS 53 and I am so grateful my children have the privilege of graduating from their as well.

I love this school because my son was put into a specific class to help him keep up with the work since he is a December baby. It's tough to keep up with the kids that are almost 1 year older than him. The teachers and staff really care about the kids.

My daughter attends P.S.53 Bay Terrace school and she's in a class for children with special needs and I never feel like I'm just sending her to school, but I feel like she's with family. From her very first day, They wanted to know so much about her. Her teacher and therapists are always coming up with new ideas and ways to reach her needs, and to challenge her. This school communicates and provides direction for students and parents. I just can't say enough about this school. Thank you!

So far I'm very pleased with PS 53, my son was in the Pre K program and he has learned so much. From writing his full name to adding and subtracting. The principal has been very nice and helpful to me personally, I see no fault. PTA is very kind. He is entering the K in Sept. so I'm excited, and see how he does.

As the school year is winding down I must say that I am very pleased with how wonderful my daughters year had been. She is in the CTT class with Miss Sloan and Miss Curzio and she loves it. They are two great teachers. She enjoys going to school and she has learned so much. I am happy with my experience so far at this school.

I like this school for my child as a whole. He is doing fine and the teachers so far are fine. I am not overly impressed and I don't think because you are deemed a 'Blue Ribbon School' you are the best. I have many other friends in different schools and they do so much more. Much more parent involvement. That is not true that if you want to be involved, you are. I have been told first hand that the principle Mrs. Esposito does not like nor does she want parents in the school for any reason. This to me is a disgrace and it is definitely felt when you try to enter the school. I understand the point of the CCT class however I don't see the productivity of it for the kids that are on the higher end.

I have two children who attend this school and one is learning disabled and one is in main stream classes. Both children have excelled at this school and have gotten all the help and more then I have expected a public school do. There has been a lot of parent involvement and if there were any problems they are addressed in a timely fashion. This is one of the reasons we chose Staten Island was because of PS 53. The only thing that I am slightly annoyed with is they do not give enough time for the working parent o take off work before a parent involved event.

I don't know what happened to PS53 but it took a dive this year. My child had horrible teachers. She would come home upset because the teacher would make inappropriate comments to her. When I would try to ritify the situation, the principal and assistant principal would take the teachers side. Also, if your child has special needs, get out now. My child's IEP was not followed and she suffered for it this year. Her teacher is very unprofessional she was talking bad about another parent at field day. Also, since when are teachers allowed to text message on their cells phone during class hours.

I must say PS 53 is very lucky to have such an involved AP as Mr. Reformato. He's wonderful and knows all the kids by name. If you asks questions, he is more than willing to answer and help your child. I'm excited about my daughter attending PS 53 I see her doing well here. Thanks Mr. Reformato! for opening the doors and making our children feel important!

My daughter has been a student at PS 53 for three years now, and I must say, reading these past few remarks was a bit disturbing. As a parent, I find this school to be very parent friendly, very informative and extremely interactive. More-so than the last two schools my daughter was in. She has been blessed with three wonderful teachers throughout her time here, each better than the next. And I believe that Ms. Esposito promotes a great environment for my child! As for the A.P., he is a kind man, nothing more, or less! Added note, I have yet to meet a 'grumpy' teacher there.

I have 2 children in this school. We have been here for 4 years now. My one child, who is a high 4 has always been fine. My other child, who is of special needs, has had many problems. For the most part, the teachers are wonderful. The principle and assistant principle, that's another story. They are more concerned about the budget and their appearance, then the needs of the special ed students. My older child graduates this year. I will be requesting a variance for the younger one. It's a shame though, as there are some outstanding teachers there.

I never feel welcomed at this school. My child has been placed in all the extra programs to help her to improve her writing skills. So far, I have not seen any progress. I do not even want to speak with the male assitant principal who has no idea about professional boundaries or respect toward parents.

My two girls presently attend ps 53 and I am extremely disappointed with the lack of communication between teachers and parents. I find the Assistant Principal very argumental. He is very unprofessional towards parents. The school is very unfriendly and not welcoming to parents and students. I am seriously considering taking my daughters out of this school in September and placing them in private school.

My daughter was going to this school and I have nothing nice to say about this school . They dont want you to ask any questions. I never felt welcomed in this school. The dont want you asking any questions in regards to your childs education needs. They dont like to work with you. They just say dont worry. And just push it to the other grade. And the thirty seven min after school is a joke. Their not helping these kids . They hand your child a book and tell them to just read. How is that helping them. My daughter is now in another public school . And she is doing so great. Shes happier. The teachers are so kindto us. Im glad i took her out of this school.

I had a child/children in this school for 3 years and I must say, after getting used to the security measures, I had a wonderful experience. Not being from the area, my children and I were welcomed by the teachers, principal and parent coordinator. It helps to get involved to meet people and feel at home. We moved again this summer and I must say this is when you see the level of education your children recieved in this school-both my children are in the highest level classes there are for their grade! I am proud of them because they have worked hard, but it has alot to do with the school and teachers they have had. I believe PS 53 is doing their best with what they have been given. Keep up the good work!

As a parent, after almost 1 1/2 years I am very unhappy with this school. There is no parent involvement. As a parent you are unwelcome. Ask questions and all you hear is he/she is a wonderful child, and he/she is getting everything they need. The principal is very unapproachable, has a horrible attitude, and is never seen. There are no extra curricular activities that you do not have to pay for. No groups or teams to be involved in. This school is not about the children, its all about it's statistics.

My son attends this school and it's not the school you'd like your child to go. First of all, the parents are not welcome. All you hear about your child is how wonderful he is and it's pleasure to have him in the class. But if you have questions about a report card, the answer is very standard: 'Don't worry about it, it's fine, he is doing very well oh, it s nothing' and actually your child will not be graded adequately, trust me on this

This is not the school for you if you want to take an active part of your childs education. My son was not challenged at all and when I tried to discuss options with the teacher, I was told that he was an A student and therfore fine. And parents were not welcomed at all in the school. I was not informed of any classroom activities. And if you are not from Staten Island you are an 'outsider' and not welcome at anything.
